Ballot Access News » Blog Archive » Gary Johnson Recommends that Libertarian Party Nominate Former Judge Jim Gray for Vice-President:

April 30, 2012 - "On April 30, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, who is widely expected to be the Libertarian Party presidential nominee this year, endorsed former California Superior Court Judge Jim Gray for the Libertarian Party’s vice-presidential nomination. Gray was appointed to the Superior Court in 1989 by California Governor George Deukmejian, and served as a Judge until 2010. Gray had previously served as a Municipal Court Judge in Santa Ana, California. In 2004, when Gray was the party’s U.S. Senate nominee in 2004, he took a leave of absence. Gray polled 216,522 votes for U.S. Senate in 2004. His best showing was in Mendocino County, where he polled 5.2%. Here is Gray’s wiki page. He is age 67."

Ron Paul supporters take over Alaska Republican Party | Alaska Dispatch

Ron Paul supporters take over Alaska Republican Party | Alaska Dispatch - Amanda Coyne:

April 28, 2012 - "'There’s always someone pointing out that the world would be a better place if they were in charge,' said Randy Ruedrich, longtime and outgoing chairman of the Alaska Republican Party.... This weekend, it was the ... supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul

"After at least 12 years of the Alaska GOP being run by what those party newcomers call 'establishment Republicans,' a new force is taking over: Alaska Republicans voted Russ Millete as the party’s new chairman and Debbie Holland-Brown as co-chair. They are both supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul.

"Ruedrich, an old-school Republican who had held the job of chairman since 2000, chose not to run again,"

Ron Paul Wins Louisiana Caucus

PRESS RELEASE
April 29, 2012, 10:53 a.m. EDT

Ron Paul Wins Louisiana Caucus

Wins four and a half of six congressional district caucuses, securing 111 of 150 or 74 percent of delegates elected yesterday to the state convention

LAKE JACKSON, Texas, Apr 29, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Supporters of 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul won yesterday's Louisiana caucus, securing an overwhelming majority of winnable delegates to the June Republican state convention that will affect the weight of the Paul delegation to the August Republican National Convention in Tampa.
Preliminary results from the Louisiana Republican Party indicate that Ron Paul supporters won majorities in Congressional Districts 1, 2, 5, and 6, with a narrow decision having occurred in District 4. This means Ron Paul supporters won about four and a half of the six Congressional District caucus conventions held yesterday.
In each CD the top 25 delegates will go to the state convention on June 2nd in Shreveport. Yesterday, 111 out of 150 or 74 percent of delegates elected today were in fact Ron Paul delegates. The Louisiana state GOP soon will award 30 additional delegates.
A "conservative slate" ran a partially combined slate with establishment-moderate Mitt Romney in CDs 1, 2 and 4. In each of those districts Ron Paul supporters required more votes than all of their opponents combined. Remarkably, supporters of the 12-term Congressman from Texas accomplished this in CDs 1 and 2, but fell just short of this in CD 4, which is why the decision was split.
Taken together, victories across four and half CDs mean that Ron Paul supporters are likely to control the outcome of the state convention in June.
To be sure, a win on this scale gives Ron Paul supporters a majority of yesterday's elected delegates and the ability to choose most of the at-large delegates, as well as the three National Delegates from CDs 1, 2, 5, and 6.
The Ron Paul campaign's Louisiana State Director Pete Chamberlain said of the victory, "Yesterday's result shows the changing dynamic among grassroots conservative activists dedicated to promoting a Republican platform that adheres to the Constitutional values Dr. Paul represents. Back-room dealing and insider politics are no match for the grassroots enthusiasm that is the hallmark of the Ron Paul campaign. Yesterday, Ron Paul's dedicated Louisiana supporters showed what passionate, persistent activism can achieve when centered around a consistent message of freedom and prosperity."
"Ron Paul's victory shows his delegate-attainment strategy is working and demonstrates that the media and Washington pundits are underestimating his influence in the nominating process," said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Manager John Tate.
"The Louisiana win forecasts a prominent role for Ron Paul at the RNC. It also signals that the convention will feature a spirited discussion over whether conservatism will triumph over the status quo, all in relation to the end game of defeating President Obama," added Mr. Tate.

Looking Towards Tampa: Ron Paul's Delegate Strategy - Independent Voter Network

Looking Towards Tampa: Ron Paul's Delegate Strategy - Independent Voter Network - Kimberley Bays:

April 27, 2012 - "Many insiders are speculating that at least 600 delegates are actually Dr. Paul supporters, particularly in caucus states. Under GOP rules, in order for a candidate to be placed in nomination they must have a majority of delegates from each state. Given what has happened thus far in the primary season, Paul will control the delegations from Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Washington State. With Sen. Santorum and Speaker Gingrich out, it is likely the same case for Nevada, as well. If these realities hold true through April, Dr. Paul arguably has sufficient delegates to be nominated.

"In terms of state party control, Ron Paul supporters control the Iowa Republican Party. Six of the new Iowa GOP state central committee members elected at district conventions Saturday have publicly expressed support for Dr. Paul, as well as the new state party chair."

Former NM governor Johnson steaming toward Libertarian presidential nomination - Alamogordo Daily News

Former NM governor Johnson steaming toward Libertarian presidential nomination - Alamogordo Daily News:

April 25, 2012 - "Numerous Libertarians said in interviews that Johnson will steamroll to the nomination May 5 at the Libertarian Party convention in Las Vegas, Nev.

"'He's going to be nominated on the first ballot, probably with 90 percent of the vote. Then he's going to fall flat on his face, just as Bob Barr did,' said Bill Still of Virginia, also a Libertarian candidate for president.

"Mark Hinkle, chairman of the Libertarian Party, said he had done enough of a sampling to project Johnson as the nominee.

"'He seems to overwhelmingly be the choice in delegate counts and straw polls,' Hinkle said.

"Hinkle, who lives in California, said he gives Johnson a chance to be competitive in the presidential race in one state -- New Mexico."

Ron Paul 2012 Wins Majority Of Washington Delegates To Convention, Other States Expected To Follow - International Business Times

Ron Paul 2012 Wins Majority Of Washington Delegates To Convention, Other States Expected To Follow - International Business Times:

April 26, 2012 - "Ron Paul's 2012 campaign has won the majority of Washington's delegates to the Republican National Convention.... Washington is now the third state, after Iowa and Minnesota, in which Ron Paul has locked up at least half of the state's nominating delegates. In order to be officially entered in nomination at the Tampa, Fla., convention, he needs to secure half or more of the delegates in five states, and as of Thursday, he looks poised to grab a majority of delegates in other states like North Dakota and Maine in coming weeks.

"Ron Paul's 2012 campaign has taken an unorthodox tack, hoping to draw state delegates to his camp rather than simply winning the popular vote. As such, he is stacking up delegates who once backed Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum and other fallen candidates."

GOP race down to two, Ron Paul rides late delegate gains into Austin | kvue.com Austin

GOP race down to two, Ron Paul rides late delegate gains into Austin | kvue.com Austin - Mark Wiggins / Michael Moore:

Apr. 26, 2012 - "With Newt Gingrich's impending exit, the GOP primary is down to just Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. Trailing far behind Romney in delegates, belated wins in Iowa and Minnesota announced this week have inched Paul closer [to] the five states in which he needs a plurality of votes in order to punch his ticket to the Republican National Convention in August.

"'The money keeps coming in, the crowds keep getting bigger and the enthusiasm is increasing,' Paul told KVUE shortly after addressing the crowd assembled on the university's LBJ lawn. 'So we're going to keep maximizing our efforts to get the most amount of delegates, have a presence at Tampa and keep this whole freedom movement going.'"

Ron Paul Wins Minnesota Delegates by a Landslide

Ron Paul Wins Minnesota Delegates by a Landslide - David Wiegel, Slate:

April 23, 2012 - "Over the weekend, Minnesota held congressional district conventions. Now, the state's February caucus -- one of the trio of non-binding contests Santorum won early that month -- went 45 percent for Santorum, 27 percent for Paul, and only 17 percent for Romney. The Associated Press and other groups went on to estimate that Santorum would win 17 of Minnesota's delegates, Paul would win 10, and Romney 6. Wrong. Ron Paul dominated the CD conventions. According to a tweet from RNC committeewoman Pat Anderson, Paul took 20 of the 24 delegates available in the CDs.

"Pat Anderson <@patandersonmn> 'Ron Paul gets 20/24 Congressional District delegates. CD4 3, CD2 3, CD8 2, CD1 2.'"

Poll: 6% of Republicans would vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson - West Palm Beach Libertarian | Examiner.com

Poll: 6% of Republicans would vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson - West Palm Beach Libertarian | Examiner.com:

"According to a new poll out yesterday by Public Policy Polling, if the election for the President of the United States was held this past week, Libertarian Party Candidate Gary Johnson would receive 6% of the Republican vote, with 75% of the nation not knowing who Johnson is. This is far better than the 2% he was receiving when running as a Republican last year. Johnson changed from the GOP to the Libertarian Party late last December....

"In a poll last year by the same Public Policy Polling found Johnson to be the most popular of the candidates in their home states. Johnson garnered 44% popularity in his home state of New Mexico while Mitt Romney only received a 40% rating by those from Massachusetts. This is important as it shows Johnson could be polling much better if people knew who he was as his issues seem to closely match the bulk of American values."

Ron Paul gets a boost at Yakima County GOP Convention | Yakima Herald-Republic - Mike Faulk:

April 14, 2012 - "A coalition of Paul organizers and anti-Romney conservatives came out in force at Saturday’s Yakima County Republican Convention and left with a majority of the county’s delegates to the state convention.

"At least 27 of the 44 elected state Republican delegates from Yakima County were on a slate of candidates circulated by the grass-roots coalition of Paul supporters before voting took place.

"Romney supporters, joined by former allies of rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, had also circulated a slate of candidates. But many had to settle for being elected as alternate delegates or not at all."

Colorado Republicans split delegate votes between Romney, unified Paul and Santorum supporters - The Denver Post

Colorado Republicans split delegate votes between Romney, unified Paul and Santorum supporters - The Denver Post, Lynne Bartels:

April 14, 2012 - "Colorado Republicans are heading to their national convention with their most conservative delegation in years, as supporters for Ron Paul and Rick Santorum masterminded a stunning upset in electing delegates....

"Santorum's supporters united with Paul's backers to form the 'Conservative Unity Slate' to win a slew of delegate slots. Four years ago, only one Paul supporter was elected to attend the national convention.

"'This is a revolution,' said Florence Sebern of Denver, an 'unpledged' delegate who was wearing a Paul pin. She was part of the slate....

"At congressional assemblies Thursday and Friday, Republicans elected 21 delegates and 21 alternates. Thirteen of the 18 winning delegates elected Friday were on the Paul/Santorum unity slate.

"Today, to the relief of Romey backers, eight of the 12 at-large delegate slots, and six of the 12 at-large alternate slots went to Romney supporters."

Ron Paul Only Candidate Able to Defeat Obama in New Poll | EON: Enhanced Online News

Ron Paul Only Candidate Able to Defeat Obama in New Poll | EON: Enhanced Online News:

April 12, 2012 - "Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul again polls better against President Barack Obama in a head-to-head matchup than establishment-choice moderate Mitt Romney, according to a poll released today from Rasmussen.

"The poll notes that in a general election matchup, the 12-term Congressman from Texas edges out Obama by 1 percentage point, 44 to 43 percent. The survey also notes that in a hypothetical 2012 head-to-head, Obama and Romney are tied at 45 percent, which bodes poorly for Republicans being urged to believe the race is over, only to later experience buyer’s remorse.

"40 percent of voters respond that they 'strongly disapprove' and 27 percent 'strongly approve' of his performance. With a Presidential Approval Index of -13 points, it is noteworthy that some Republicans are seemingly settling on a candidate no more popular than the President, suggesting an establishment liberal Democrat is no more popular than a establishment liberal Republican. The Rasmussen poll may be prescient in showing a general election scenario of confusion among voters over which candidate has the least liberal record."

BOOK REVIEW: 'No, They Can't' - Washington Times

BOOK REVIEW: 'No, They Can't' - Washington Times - Robet Verbruggen:

April 9, 2012 - "John Stossel was for many years a great oddity: an openly right-of-center broadcast-TV journalist. Now he’s something less rare: a right-of-center host on a Fox cable network.

But if there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, it’s his fierce dedication to libertarian principles. In his latest book, No, They Can’t: Why Government Fails - But Individuals Succeed, Mr. Stossel argues that in almost every case, we’re better off handling things ourselves, without intervention from the state.

"As an introduction to a way of looking at the world, No, They Can’t is superb. In about 300 highly readable pages, Mr. Stossel whips through countless topics, explaining for each why libertarians think the government does more harm than good. It’s clearly intended to bring libertarian thought to people who haven’t really encountered it before: Every few pages, he includes a section divider explaining “What intuition tempts us to believe” (e.g. 'Drugs cause crime') and “What reality taught me” ('The drug war causes the crime')."

Ron Paul wins do-over St. Charles County caucus

Ron Paul wins do-over St. Charles County caucus - Mark Schlinkmann, StLToday::

Apr. 11, 2012 - "Supporters of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul took control of St. Charles County’s second-try Republican caucus Tuesday night, winning all of its delegates to later stages of the state GOP’s presidential selection process.

"The Paul campaign used superior organization to get its people to the meeting at the St. Charles Convention Center. More than 900 people took part overall.

"Brent Stafford, the Paul activist who chaired the caucus, said Paul’s supporters were 'inspired by his positions on constitutional government and sound fiscal policy' and his consistency on issues over the years.

GOP State Chairman David Cole had scheduled the do-over session after the county GOP’s original caucus March 17 disbanded amid boisterous disputes over rules. Two Paul supporters, including Stafford, were arrested at that event.

Ron Paul's baby boom - Alex Isenstadt - POLITICO.com

Ron Paul's baby boom - Alex Isenstadt - POLITICO.com:

Apr. 8, 2012 - "Jared Paine, a Paul supporter who operates a website that tracks the campaigns of libertarian-minded candidates, said he counted around two dozen active Paul backers who are running for House or Senate seats and another 200 or so who are seeking local offices — almost all of them running as Republicans.

"John Dennis, a San Francisco Republican looking to unseat House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, has spoken at Paul rallies and cut a Web video urging voters to support Paul prior to the Iowa caucuses. Florida Senate candidate Mirand Sharma, who has worked as a Paul organizer, has sought to recruit campaign volunteers from among those who also support the congressman. Missouri hopeful Jason Greene, who is running for a House seat, has vigorously promoted his candidacy on Paul-focused online bulletin boards.

"To hear those aligned with the GOP presidential candidate tell it, the proliferation of Paul-affiliated candidates underscores a simple truth: Paul, once regarded as a fringe candidate, has gone mainstream. Despite the fact that he has announced he is not running for reelection to Congress, his ideas have established him as an important figure in American politics."

Ron Paul leaves other GOP contenders in the dust when it comes to donations from members of the military - HUMAN EVENTS - Hope Hodge:

April 6, 2012 - "As of Sept. 30, 2011, Paul had received $95,567 from members of the military, edging out President Barack Obama’s $72,616, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. By Feb. 29, that lead had more than doubled to $315,109 compared to Obama’s $148,308.

"The closest runner-up to Paul in the Republican race is Romney, who reported $13,300  in military-related donations as of Sept. 30, and $36,108 from those employed by the military as of Feb. 29.

"In contrast, Paul received more than $220,000 from military donors from October to February even as he trailed three other GOP contenders in the nomination race.

"To date, military donations to the top three Republican frontrunners total barely one-third of what Paul has raised from the same demographic."

The Kochs and the Cato Institute: a hostile takover?

The Kochs and the Cato Institute: a hostile takover? | James Antle | The Guardian:

April 2, 2012 - "Seldom do internecine quarrels among libertarians receive much notice from the outside world. But the battle between the Koch brothers and the Cato Institute's current management for control of Washington, DC's main libertarian thinktank is all the rage. The Washington Post and New York Times have both published riveting accounts of the personalities and principles involved. A 'Save the Cato Institute' Facebook page has attracted more than 5,500 'likes'.... Cato officials have mounted a full-court press arguing that Koch control of the board would reduce the thinktank to an appendage of the Republican party....

"Cato has published papers critical of both the 'war on drugs' and the Bush administration's conduct of the 'war on terror'. While there is no strict party line, many of their scholars have opposed the Iraq war and expressed civil libertarian concerns about the Patriot Act. Cato is sympathetic to open immigration and same-sex marriage. Some of these priorities have sat uneasily with their more conservative Republican donors in the past."

GOP Candidates Hunt for Delegates Before Voting Begins | The Texas Tribune

GOP Candidates Hunt for Delegates Before Voting Begins | The Texas Tribune - Jay Root:

April 4, 2012 - "Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Lake Jackson are ... feverishly working to stack the state convention in June with their supporters, a move that could help increase their influence should the nomination be unresolved by the time the party’s national convention rolls around in late August.

"GOP delegate selection conventions, from the precinct level to counties and Senate districts, are being held across the state, most of them on April 14 and April 21, officials say. The delegates chosen there will go to the state GOP convention in Fort Worth in early June. Republican delegates in Texas are to be awarded to candidates proportionately based on the percentage the candidates get in the May 29 primary — but there are some wrinkles that could allow delegates to switch their allegiance.

"'The Ron Paul campaign is very engaged, inquiring how the process works, organizing turnout,' said GOP chairman Steve Munisteri. 'I see the Santorum people putting together a very active team, and they are working on getting people to turn out to the conventions.'

Munisteri said he hadn’t seen much delegate-recruiting activity from the campaigns of front-runner Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.... 'No sign of them whatsoever,' Munisteri said."

Ron Paul only presidential candidate telling truth about America’s economic woes

NH Best Selling Author Maintains Ron Paul Only Presidential Candidate Telling America the Truth about America’s Economic Woes - Houston Chronicle:

April 3, 2012 - "Best-selling author Barry James Dyke, author of The Pirates of Manhattan and recently released sequel, The Pirates of Manhattan II: Highway to Serfdom, maintains Ron Paul is the only candidate consistently telling Americans the truth about its finances and the role that the Federal Reserve has in America’s decline. http://www.thepiratesofmanhattan.com .

Dyke says, 'Ron Paul is the only candidate addressing the heart of America’s financial woes, the Federal Reserve System. Since the crisis began the Fed has consistently been more interested in bailing out Wall Street rather than Main Street. The Fed, with its zero interest rate policy, has ruined the currency through inflation by turning the central bank into a printing press, a long used trick of fallen empires.' The author continues, 'Dr. Paul is the only candidate addressing the core economic issues facing America; unsustainable wars, bankruptcy of the country, debauchment of the currency, corporate welfare, and a collapsed middle class'."
