Montana PAC spends $500,000 on TV ad for Libertarian Dan Cox

Group sympathetic to Tester drops $500K on TV ad – for Libertarian - Mike Dennison, Billings Gazette":

October 26, 2012 - "HELENA - A hunters-and-anglers group sympathetic to Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester has spent $500,000 on a new TV ad in his Senate race — telling voters to support the Libertarian candidate, Dan Cox ... the third person in the high-profile Senate contest between Tester and U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg.

"The ad, which began airing this week, criticizes Rehberg for supporting a bill that would give the Department of Homeland Security expanded authority over federal lands within 100 miles of U.S. borders.

"Its closing frame then says: 'Vote Cox. The Real Conservative.'

"The ad is funded by the Montana Hunters and Anglers Leadership Fund, a political-action committee financed earlier this year by the League of Conservation Voters, a leading conservation and environmental group backing Tester."

POTUS election may be in Gary Johnson's hands

Presidential Election May Be in Gary Johnson's Hands - HispanicBusiness.com - Hillary Chabot:

October 25, 2012 - "Gary Johnson's average 1-to-2 percent draw in New Hampshire polls could make him a spoiler for Mitt Romney in the neck-and-neck Granite State race -- but the Libertarian Party candidate sees himself as another Ralph Nader for President Obama in some key western swing states.

"'I hope I'm a spoiler for both of them,' the former New Mexico governor told the Herald. 'I do have a sense in New Hampshire and I do have a sense in many states that I could have an impact.'

"Recent polls show a razor-thin margin between the presidential candidates in New Hampshire, with a Rasmussen Poll on Tuesday showing Romney with a 2-point lead and 1 percent of voters going to other candidates like Johnson.

"'They should be worried,' said Suffolk University pollster David Paleologos of Romney and Obama. "If it's an even race or a 1-point race then it definitely matters and you've got the Nader effect.'"

Gary Johnson could hurt Obama in Colorado

Pollsters: Pro-pot Libertarian Gary Johnson could hurt Obama in Colorado - Colorado Daily - Brittany Arias::

October 28, 2012 - "Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson will make a campaign stop on the University of Colorado campus on Monday night, and pollsters say the third-party candidate with a pro-pot agenda could siphon votes away from President Barack Obama in his razor-close race against Mitt Romney in this battleground state.

"Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, will be on the Boulder campus at 7 p.m. in the Math 100 building for a town-hall style gathering. Proponents of Colorado ballot measure Amendment 64, which seeks to legalize marijuana and regulate it like alcohol, also will be at the event.

"Traditionally, libertarians such as Johnson tend to draw votes away from Republican candidates. But with marijuana legalization being a key issue for Johnson, there's the potential for voters already enthused about Amendment 64 to also cast votes in favor of the Libertarian presidential candidate -- including some from the left-leaning youth demographic, pollsters say....

"Floyd Ciruli, a Denver-based pollster and political analyst, said that less than half a percent of voters in Colorado are Libertarians. But Johnson could gain votes from other demographics, particularly college students or Republicans who supported Ron Paul.

Obama thinks Ayn Rand is for teens
(for predictably childish reasons)

Obama Thinks Ayn Rand is For Teens (For Predictably Childish Reasons) - Hit & Run : Reason.com - Brian Doherty:

October 25, 2012 - "President Obama is asked ... by Rolling Stone: what does he think of Ayn Rand? After saying that 'sure' he's read her, his answer:
"Ayn Rand is one of those things that a lot of us, when we were 17 or 18 and feeling misunderstood, we'd pick up. Then, as we get older, we realize that a world in which we're only thinking about ourselves and not thinking about anybody else, in which we're considering the entire project of developing ourselves as more important than our relationships to other people and making sure that everybody else has opportunity – that that's a pretty narrow vision. It's not one that, I think, describes what's best in America. Unfortunately, it does seem as if sometimes that vision of a "you're on your own" society has consumed a big chunk of the Republican Party...
"Reducing Rand's message of liberty and achievement to one of a narrow 'you're on your own' individualism shouldn't be a surprise coming from the president, though it's still sad that the leader of the nation that attracted Rand to escape the Soviet Union at some risk would say such a thing.

"There is nothing 'narrow' about Rand's vision except in that it created moral boundaries in which most of the functions of Obama's government would be seen as illegitimate, because they use threats and violence against non-aggressors to achieve social goals. As Rand summed up her own philosophy once, it really amounts to: 'Gentlemen, leave your guns outside!' That alas is something Barack 'drones away' Obama will never do."

Gary Johnson Twitter Passes 100,000 Followers

Gary Johnson Twitter Passes 100,000 Followers - IVN.us - Chad Peace, IVN Editors' Blog, Independent Voter Network:

October 27, 2012 - "Gary Johnson is perhaps the most popular 'online candidate' since Ron Paul, and undoubtably draws many of the Congressman’s supporters. And with over 300,000 Facebook Likes, over 1,000,000 Google+ followers, and as of today, over 100,000 Twitter followers, Gary Johnson could be laying the groundwork to make a significant impact on the political conversation for a long-time to come.

"Politics and technology are at an interesting cross-roads. The big number of reliable votes are still made by the folks sitting in a reclining chair with a remote control in their hand, but it won’t be long until those who grew up with Facbeook and Twitter start to really change the playing field."

Ayn Rand Institute Questions Whether Obama Has Read Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand Institute Questions Whether Obama Has Read Ayn Ran =- Lucia Greaves, Huffington Post::

October 26, 2012 - "After President Barack Obama said in an interview with Rolling Stone that Ayn Rand's books are largely for teenagers who are 'feeling misunderstood,' the Ayn Rand Institute is questioning whether the president has done his reading.

"'President Obama claims he has read Ayn Rand, but you wouldn’t know it from his recent comments," said Don Watkins, a fellow at the Ayn Rand Institute and co-author of Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand's Ideas Can End Big Government. 'To be an individualist, Obama suggests, is to be concerned with yourself with no regard for other people -- indeed, at the expense of other people. That is a total distortion of Rand's individualism'....

"'The President is pulling the same old trick that collectivists have been pulling for the last hundred fifty years. Rather than openly defend the proposition that you have a duty to serve society, he misrepresents and smears individualism....

"'Rand's argument is that other people are a tremendous value to an individualist: as teachers, friends, trading partners, lovers. But the key to successful human relationships, she argues, is that there should be no sacrifice of anyone to anyone.... Unlike the President, Rand doesn’t confuse ‘caring for others’ with having the government forcibly redistribute your wealth to others. She recognizes that our main obligation to other people is to respect their freedom.'"

Libertarian Presidential Duo of Gary Johnson & Jim Gray Plot 2016 White House Run - Orange County - News - Navel Gazing - R. Scott Moxley:

Otober 24, 2012 - "No matter the results of the Nov. 6 election, the Libertarian presidential campaign duo of Gary Johnson and Jim Gray, the retired Orange County superior court judge, plan to run again for the White House in 2016.

"Gray, Johnson's vice presidential running mate, told a crowd this month at Tulane University that the two men have already decided a second run -- next time with plenty of planning -- is critical to break the stranglehold the two major political parties exercise over failed foreign and domestic policies".

Gary Johnson Launches First TV Ad - Hit & Run : Reason.com

Gary Johnson Launches First TV Ad Touting His Dovish Foreign Policy - Hit & Run : Reason.com - Garrett Quinn:

October 25, 2012 - "With less than two weeks remaining until the presidential election, Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson is airing an ad in select markets touting his dovish approach to relations with Iran. In the ad Johnson speaks over a computer simulation of a drone strike before speaking directly to the camera, imploring viewers to “Be Libertarian with me for one election.”

"Johnson’s campaign wouldn’t specify how much the ad buy is costing them but did say they have another ad that does not deal with foreign policy that will go up in select markets in the coming days....
The Johnson campaign bought air time in the libertarianish mountain west states of New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, Montana and Idaho, as well as more left leaning territory like Vermont and Washington, D.C."

Gary Johnson for president | Chattanooga Free Press

Gary Johnson for president | Chattanooga Free Press | timesfreepress.com:

October 24, 2012 - "For more than 80 years, the Free Press editorial page has been a voice for free market economic philosophies, personal responsibility and limited, responsible government. Endorsing the presidential candidate who most thoroughly represents those values has been an important function of the Free Press editorial page for nearly as long.

"For most of those election cycles, we have endorsed Republican candidates for president.... This election, however, the Republican Party nominee has failed to demonstrate a consistent commitment to conservative principles.... Mitt Romney is too flawed to earn the Free Press' endorsement.... Romney may be less eager to tax, spend, attack personal freedoms and disregard the constitutional limits on government than his Democratic opponent, President Barack Obama, but only slightly....

"As a result, the Free Press editorial page endorses Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson for President of the United States."

Vote for your candidate for Oct. 30 debate in Washington

Free and Equal Elections (FEE) is holding an instant runoff election among the 4 candidates in tonight's FEE presidential debate in Chicago. The two candidates receiving the highest vote will debate again Oct. 30 in Washington, D.C.

In instant runoff voting, a voter ranks all candidates (in this case from 1 to 4). In the first round of voting, only the voters' #1 choices are counted. If no candidates receive a majority, the candidate with the fewest number of votes is dropped, and his voters' ballots are distributed to their #2 choices, and so on for subsequent rounds.

Russell Means, American Indian Activist, Dies at 72 - NYTimes.com

Russell Means, American Indian Activist, Dies at 72 - NYTimes.com - Robert D. McFadden:

October 22, 2012 - "Russell C. Means, the charismatic Oglala Sioux who helped revive the warrior image of the American Indian in the 1970s with guerrilla-tactic protests that called attention to the nation’s history of injustices against its indigenous peoples, died on Monday at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was 72....

"He rose to national attention as a leader of the American Indian Movement in 1970 by directing a band of Indian protesters who seized the Mayflower II ship replica at Plymouth, Mass., on Thanksgiving Day.... Later, he orchestrated an Indian prayer vigil atop the federal monument of sculptured presidential heads at Mount Rushmore, S.D., to dramatize Lakota claims to Black Hills land. In 1972, he organized cross-country caravans converging on Washington to protest a century of broken treaties, and led an occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.... And in a 1973 protest covered by the national news media for months, he led hundreds of Indians and white sympathizers in an occupation of Wounded Knee, S.D., site of the 1890 massacre of some 350 Lakota men, women and children in the last major conflict of the American Indian wars....

"In 1985 and 1986, he went to Nicaragua to support indigenous Miskito Indians whose autonomy was threatened by the leftist Sandinista government. He reported Sandinista atrocities against the Indians and urged the Reagan administration to aid the victims.... In 1987, Mr. Means ran for president. He sought the Libertarian Party nomination but lost to Ron Paul, a former and future congressman from Texas. In 2002, Mr. Means campaigned independently for the New Mexico governorship but was barred procedurally from the ballot."

Frightened GOP tries to shut down election competitors

Frightened Republicans Try To Shut Down Election Competitors - Forbes - Doug Bandow:

October 22, 2012 - "The Republican Party claims to believe in freedom.  But not really.  Certainly not if that means being able to vote for someone who truly believes in liberty.

"Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a Republican who cut spending while advocating legalization of marijuana, originally ran for the GOP presidential nomination.  But most of the debate organizers refused to let him join the largely undistinguished candidate herd which included another unknown former governor ... and a businessman with no political experience....

"Johnson switched parties and won the Libertarian Party nomination (joined by former Judge Jim Gray, the vice presidential nominee). Now Republicans fear the LP might take votes away from their candidate....  GOP operatives were able to keep Johnson off the Michigan ballot — after the LP filed the paperwork three minutes late. In Pennsylvania state Republican officials unsuccessfully challenged Johnson’s petition campaign (as elsewhere, the major party duopoly requires its competitors to collect signatures to go before the voters)....

"This is the most important election in a generation (or is that millennium?), GOP apparatchiks proclaim, so any vote for anyone else is wasted. Of course, they said the same thing four years ago. And eight years ago. Alas, in those elections most Americans end up 'wasting their votes' on the two RepubliCrat candidates dedicated to the failed status quo."

Libertarian candidates wage online campaigns in races for U.S. Senate, House

Libertarian candidates wage online campaigns in races for U.S. Senate, House - Mike Dennison, Billings Gazette:

October 21, 2012 - "HELENA - "Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate Dan Cox ... 36, the owner of a fishing-lure manufacturing firm in Hamilton, is the third man in what has become the most expensive race in Montana history. He’s taking on the incumbent, Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, and the other challenger, Republican U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg.

"But rather than buy campaign advertising by the bushel, as his opponents have done, Cox is relying on the Internet and social networking for his campaign – much like his counterpart in the U.S. House race and fellow Bitterroot Valley resident, Libertarian Dave Kaiser of Victor.

"'I don’t have a yard sign, I don’t have a bumper sticker, I don’t have a (campaign) business card, I don’t have a political powerhouse team protecting me from the media,' says Kaiser. 'I am not a politician. I just speak my mind.'"

Romney's in a Cult and Ryan's a Satanist? The GOP's 2012 Religion Woes | Alternet

Romney's in a Cult and Ryan's a Satanist? The GOP's 2012 Religion Woes | Alternet - Bruce Wilson:

October 17, 2012 - "Back in 2011 a series of attacks from leading conservative evangelicals darkly warned that Ayn Rand devotees, Paul Ryan included, might be worshiping at the altar of crypto-satanism. Now... a flurry of mainstream media articles cover a controversy erupting after evangelism superstar Billy Graham prayed with (and in effect endorsed) candidate Mitt Romney and observers noticed that an article on the website of Graham's flagship Billy Graham Evangelistic Association identified Mormonism as a 'cult'.

"Yes, really: This year, the Party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Eisenhower is championed by one candidate [whom] conservative evangelical Christians suspect of worshiping odd, fecund Gods who live, love, and multiply on strangely-named foreign planets, and by another candidate enthralled by an economic philosophy that helped birth Anton LaVey's Church of Satan."

"Judge Gray, a retired Superior Court of Orange County, CA Judge and author of Why Our Drug Laws Have Failed And What We Can Do About It and A Voter's Handbook: Effective Solutions To America's Problems, has been crossing the country visiting colleges and universities for several weeks speaking with students and liberty minded voters about the economy, jobs, education, foreign policy and other key issues during this presidential election campaign season....

"'In this election, I think it is vitally important that voters, especially younger voters, are aware of the debt burden placed upon them, an issue I am discussing during this tour of universities and colleges,' Judge Gray said. 'I'm trying to bring awareness of how irresponsible and unrestrained spending, current economic, foreign and civil liberty policies affect everyone, which hasn't been truthfully addressed by any of the candidates, except for my running mate, Governor Johnson, and myself.'"

Libertarian candidate runs 5Ks for governor, party

Libertarian candidate runs 5Ks for governor, party - Elections - NewsObserver.com - Gary D. Robertson, Associated Press:

October 19, 2012 - "By literally running while running for office, Barbara Howe may have the race for best hook of North Carolina’s political season sewn up.

"The Libertarian candidate for governor has jogged in 5-kilometer increments through more than 90 of North Carolina’s 100 counties as part of her campaign since kicking it off in May.

"Howe understands her lack of campaign funds compared with Democratic nominee Walter Dalton and Republican Pat McCrory. She’s irritated about being left out of live television debates, so the public doesn’t have as much familiarity with her and her party....

"Howe and other Libertarians are focused upon her getting at least 2 percent of the vote. The threshold is critical: Without it or a strong showing by Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson, state election officials will have to decertify the party. That means having to collect 100,000 signatures of registered voters by 2016 to return to the ballot – an expensive endeavor."

Gary Johnson urges voters to support candidate ‘we believe in’ - Laramie Boomerang Online
- Joshua Roberts:

October 19, 2012 - "The campaign for Gary Johnson, a Libertarian presidential candidate, touts his agenda for the U.S. as putting a stop to frivolous spending, ending wars and rebuilding America.

"The former two-term New Mexico governor stood before a crowd Thursday night at the University of Wyoming wearing a T-shirt with a peace symbol on the front and surrounded by signs describing him as 'the people’s president'....

"'What we’re hearing so much right now is this whole notion of wasted vote,' he said. 'What’s a wasted vote other than voting for somebody that you don’t believe in? That’s a wasted vote. We change things in this country by voting for somebody who we believe in, and that’s a combination of what’s the guy saying and what’s the resume. … Nothing in my resume suggests that I’m not going to doggedly pursue everything it is that I’m talking about here.'"

Paul passing torch to supporters in speech at UVU

Paul passing torch to supporters in speech at UVU - Billy Hesterman, Provo Daily Herald:

October 19, 2012 - "OREM - Texas Congressman Ron Paul called on his supporters to keep carrying his fight for personal liberty as he moves closer to retirement from public life.

"Speaking at Utah Valley University on Thursday Paul encouraged the crowd -- that gave him multiple standing ovations, chanted his name and waved signs that promoted his failed presidential bid -- to keep pushing for freedom and for change that will bring less government intrusion in their lives. He pushed for what has been branded as his version of revolution."

"Paul called on the crowd to spread the message of freedom any way they could. He stated that technology has evolved so much that people now have a greater possibility to make change if they simply try. He told the crowd to have fun working for change and urged them to keep marching his message forward.

Gary Johnson targets Obama on marijuana in CO

Gary Johnson Targets Obama on Marijuana in CO | StoptheDrugWar.org - Philip Smith:

Colorado is a tightly-contested swing state ... where Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, the former Republican governor of neighboring New Mexico, is making a strong push, with marijuana legalization and marijuana policy as one of his strongest talking points ... bringing in about 5% of the vote — and he takes three votes away from Obama for every two he takes from Romney."

"Now, as David Sirota points out in an excellent analysis of pot and presidential politics in Colorado in Salon, the Johnson campaign is taking things to a whole new level. It is now reaching out directly to Democratic voters with an automated call campaign, and the message it sends should be chilling for Democrats:

"'Hello, fellow Democrat,' a friendly male voice says. 'Like you I was thrilled to vote for Barack Obama in 2008. In 2008, candidate Obama promised not to use the Justice Department to prosecute medical marijuana in states where it was legal. But the real Obama did just that, more than doubling prosecutions, putting people in prisons and shutting down medical marijuana facilities in Colorado. That’s not the change you wanted on health freedom. But you can still be a force for hope and change by voting for Gary Johnson.'"

September 21, 2012 - "Former Congressman Tom Tancredo sent a letter ... to certain Republican state lawmakers outlining his support for a ballot measure that would legalize the sale of marijuana.

"'I have decided that it presents a responsible, effective and much-needed solution to a misguided policy,' he said.

This November, we have the opportunity to end to end the equally problematic and ineffective policy of marijuana prohibition'....

Gary Johnson Libertarian Candidate Worries Republicans - NYTimes.com

Gary Johnson Libertarian Candidate Worries Republicans - NYTimes.com - Jim Rutenberg:

October 14, 2012 - "The fear of Mr. Johnson’s tipping the outcome in an important state may explain why an aide to Mr. Romney ran what was effectively a surveillance operation into Mr. Johnson’s efforts over the summer to qualify for the ballot at the Iowa State Fair, providing witnesses to testify in a lawsuit to block him that ultimately fizzled.

Libertarians suspect it is why Republican state officials in Michigan blocked Mr. Johnson from the ballot after he filed proper paperwork three minutes after his filing deadline.

And it is why Republicans in Pennsylvania hired a private detective to investigate his ballot drive in Philadelphia, appearing at the homes of paid canvassers and, in some cases, flashing an F.B.I. badge — he was a retired agent — while asking to review the petitions they gathered at $1 a signature, according to testimony in the case and interviews."

Gary Johnson: Obama as militaristic as Bush

Gary Johnson: Obama “as militaristic” as George W Bush and Romney “has not one molecule of brain” - Rob Nikolweski, New Mexico Watchdog:

October 13, 2012 - "With little more than three weeks to go until Election Day, Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson has amped up his rhetoric on Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, stressing his differences between the two — particularly in regards to what Johnson says is excessive US military force and defense spending.

“'I’m the only candidate who doesn’t want to bomb Iran,' Johnson said earlier this week (Oct. 10) when the former two-term governor of New Mexico addressed an enthusiastic group of supporters at his alma mater, the University of New Mexico.

"Speaking without notes for just under a half-hour, Johnson blasted Obama from the left and Romney from the right but saved his most passionate rhetoric for cutting the defense budget by 43 percent and calling for an end to US foreign interventions.

"'[If] we bomb Iran, we’re going to find ourselves with another hundred million enemies to this country that we wouldn’t otherwise have,' Johnson said."

Ron Paul Won't Endorse Romney, Sees "Essentially No Difference"

Ron Paul Won't Endorse Romney, Sees "Essentially No Difference" - JackKenny, New American:

October 12 - "Ron Paul, the maverick Texas congressman who has twice run for the Republican presidential nomination, won't endorse the nominee of his party.... Paul ... made it definitive in an interview October 12 on the CNBC program Futures Now.

"'No,' he said, plainly and unequivocally, when asked about an endorsement. Neither the GOP challenger nor President Obama will change the course of fiscal and monetary policy that is leading to what has been called the 'fiscal cliff,' Paul said, because both are captive of special interests. And neither will act to stop the Federal Reserve from papering over the growing chasm of debt by inflating the money supply in a policy called 'quantitative easing.'

"'Both [are] within the establishment where they need the Federal Reserve as lender of last resort to make sure that you can take all the risk in the world,' Paul said, describing the 'Fed' as an essential prop of what is essentially a 'one-party system' in which both Republicans and Democrats refuse to cut federal spending.

"'I've been in this business a long time,' said the 12-term congressman, 'and believe me, there is essentially no difference from one administration to another, no matter what the platforms [say]. The foreign policy stays the same, the monetary policy stays the same, there's no proposal for any real cuts and both parties support it.'"

In Nevada, Johnson Is Pulling Voters From Obama Camp - IVN.us

In Nevada, Johnson Is Pulling Voters From Obama Camp - IVN.us - Terri Harel:

October 13, 2012 - "Politico recently reported that Governor Gary Johnson could actually be drawing a statistically significant amount of support from the major parties.... [In] at least one state, Nevada, Johnson is pulling voters from the Obama camp.  Other news sources, such as CNN’s PoliticalTicker are saying that he hurts the GOP more than the Democrats, overall."

"[Politico] adds this discrepancy in influence could come from geographic location: 'It’s plausible that Johnson could lower support for Obama — especially out west. For example, Johnson — the only pro-pot candidate on the ballot — is running along side as a marijuana legalization initiative in libertarian-leaning Colorado — a state that is definitely in play.' The Tucson Citizen echos this concern, citing Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico as states that could see effects at the polls.

"Gary Johnson recently put out a new [advertisment] calling on 'everyone with a vote and an axe to grind,' including Tea Partiers, Constitutionalists, Greens, Democrats, and Republicans, to 'end the two party system.'"

Gary Johnson survives brutal GOP challenge

NewsRoomAmerica.com - Presidential Candidate Governor Gary Johnson Survives Brutal Republican Challenge:

October 11, 2012 - "Republican President candidate Mitt Romney has likely lost his last hope for a victory in the electoral-rich state of Pennsylvania.

"Commonwealth Court Senior Judge James G. Colins ruled late [Wednesday] that the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania has filed nominating petitions containing more than the required 20,601 valid signatures and that the entire slate of statewide Libertarian candidates will remain on the November 6 general election ballot, including Libertarians two-term Governor Gary Johnson for President and Judge Jim Gray for Vice President.

"The ruling was a stinging defeat for Republicans who waged a grueling and expensive 9-week battle to force their Libertarian Party competition off the November ballot.

"Governor Johnson said, 'It is a travesty of the democratic process that Libertarians were required to endure such a drawn-out, expensive and unnecessary attack on their right to be on the ballot. Voters in every state deserve real choices in this election, and it is clear that the Republican Party, not only in Pennsylvania, but in key states across the country, will go to any lengths to keep liberty, nonintervention and smaller government off the ballot.'"

PA Independent: Libertarian Johnson secures place on ballot « Watchdog News - Eric Boehm:

"Along with Johnson, the Libertarians will [have] their candidates on the ballot for U.S. Senate, state auditor general, state attorney general and state treasurer.

"Tom Stevens, chairman of the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party, said the ruling was a victory in an uphill battle against the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.... 'Now the voters of Pennsylvania will have an opportunity to have a real choice in who to vote for in statewide and national elections this November,' he told PA Independent."

Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson makes a hometown visit | KOB.com - Stuart Dyson, Eyewitness News:

October 9, 2012 - "Gary Johnson brought his long-shot Libertarian campaign for president to New Mexico Tuesday, with a rally at the University of New Mexico Tuesday evening and a fundraiser high in the Sandia Mountains foothills earlier in the day....

Johnson, still steaming over his exclusion from the first Obama-Romney debate, is sticking with his message: cut federal spending, bring the troops home, legalize marijuana and gay marriage - live free....
'It's a message that resonates all across the country," Johnson said.....

Johnson is polling at about 6 percent right now, when the pollsters bother to include him. Still, that's way ahead of where other Libertarians that have been in other races for the presidency.

Michigan counties continue fight Against NDAA

Update: Michigan Counties Continue the Fight Against NDAA - Joe Wolverston II, New American:

1 October, 2012 - "Michigan may join the list of other states who have passed legislation checking the president’s power under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to indefinitely detain American citizens.

"On Monday, September 24, constitutionalists and friends of liberty gathered at the Oakland County (Michigan) General Government Committee Meeting to support Commissioner Jim Runestad’s Liberty Preservation Resolution. Blake Filippi of the Tenth Amendment Center (TAC) originally drafted this measure with the assistance of the Rhode Island Liberty Coalition.

"Reports to The New American from those attending the meeting indicate that many residents attended the meeting, as well, and passionately defended the right of Americans to live without the specter of an all-powerful police state looming over their every action.

"The day after, ... over 40 concerned Michiganders attended the Michigan State House Oversight, Reform and Ethics Committee.... Led by TAC state coordinator Shane Trejo, representatives from a coalition of groups devoted to the protection of individual liberty testified.... Notably, consistent defender of the Constitution Congressman Justin Amash (R-Mich.) appeared before the committee.

"As readers may remember, Amash’s effort to repeal the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA for 2013 was blocked in May when by a vote of 238-182, members of the House of Representatives voted to renew the president’s power to arrest and indefinitely detains Americans suspected of posing a threat to national security.

"At the committee meeting in Lansing, however,  no testimony in favor of the NDAA was heard.

"In a statement, Representative McMillin recognized Amash for his aid to the cause of liberty.

"'I appreciate the support from Congressman Amash, who has fought against the federal law that enables the executive branch to arrest and indefinitely detain anyone on U.S. soil using the slightest thread of evidence or suspicion,; McMillin said."

Kuntz: Let Johnson in - The Daily Iowan

Kuntz: Let Johnson in - The Daily Iowan - Katie Kuntz:

October 8, 2012 - "Last week, two presidential candidates debated solutions for the economy, the budget, and health care — but theirs are not the only solutions.

"Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson is also running for president as a libertarian, but the National Commission on Presidential Debates excluded him from the debate. Now, he is suing the commission for the chance to debate and share his solutions with the nation.

"Johnson’s exclusion does not only affect his campaign, it hurts American voters.

"Allowing for a third voice highlights the alternatives to the Democratic and Republican solutions. Voters need to step up and demand the commission to let Johnson debate.

"The polarization of the American electorate has done nothing to improve the nation. The gridlock of leadership has left voters with an 11-year war, high unemployment, an ever-increasing budget deficit, and uncertainty for the future of health care, the economy, and education.

"It’s time for someone who is neither red nor blue to offer some solutions."

Libertarians have enough valid signatures for PA ballot

Pennsylvania Libertarians Claim Enough Valid Signatures | Independent Political Report:

October 6, 2012 - "From Dr. Tom Stevens on LP State Chairs List and IPR comments:

"Although Judge Colins has not made a final ruling and there are still some motions outstanding and another full day of petition signature reviews scheduled at the Philadelphia Board of Elections for Tuesday, October 9, 2012, at the end of the day on Saturday, October 6, 2012, the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party obtained 20,606 valid signatures (5 more than the 20,601 needed), to place Gary Johnson, Judge Gray and the other statewide candidates endorsed by the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania on the General Election ballot this November....

"Dr. Tom Stevens, LPPA State Chair, commented: 'We thought the whole idea of holding an election was to give voters a meaningful choice on Election Day. If the only option people have is to vote for the Democrat or the Republican, I say that is no choice at all!... Now, the voters of Pennsylvania will have a real choice and can vote for candidates who support the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights and who will defend our Civil Liberties and every person’s individual right to life, liberty and property – without exception.'”

Legalising marijuana: most Americans get it, so when will our politicians? | Gary Johnson | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Legalising marijuana: most Americans get it, so when will our politicians? | Gary Johnson | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk:

October 6, 2012 - "Prohibition in the US was a huge, miserable failure. During its 13-year run, beginning in 1920, Prohibition caused a massive rise in organized crime and actually increased alcohol consumption instead of curtail it.

"After Prohibition's repeal in 1933, kids didn't start drinking in record numbers. Society didn't collapse. Today, bathtub gin dealers don't run amok on playgrounds; microbreweries don't protect their turf with automatic weapons. Instead, a safe environment to drink was created when the government began regulating and taxing alcohol.

"And yet, here we are in 2012, giving Prohibition another shot. For lack of a better word, that's just stupid."

Gary Johnson a ‘nonfactor,’ Priebus says – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Gary Johnson a ‘nonfactor,’ Priebus says – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs - Ashley Killough:

October 7, 2012 - "Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said he's not concerned that Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson will tip the scales in November.

"'In fact, I see that it's almost a nonfactor,' Priebus said on CNN's 'State of the Union'....

"Johnson, a former 2012 Republican presidential candidate who became the Libertarian nominee in May, is rarely included in national polls, but a recent CNN/ORC International Poll indicated 4% of likely voters back Johnson, while 3% support Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Obama, meanwhile, had 47%, with Romney at 44% when all four candidates were factored in....

"'(Voters) are not going to throw their vote away when we have an election here that's about the future of America. I don't see that happening,' Priebus told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley."

Gary Johnson and the 2-party stranglehold on presidential debates - Lane Filler

Gary Johnson and the 2-party stranglehold on presidential debates - Lane Filler, Newsday:

October 4, 2012 - "We are a two-party system -- not by law, but because the Democrats and the Republicans have seized the mechanisms of government. They use their control to maintain power, and other parties can't compete. This causes a bunch of self-perpetuating, corrosive behaviors, like government-funded primaries for these major parties, which are really nothing but private organizations. Withholding the money for a Republican primary out of a libertarian's paycheck makes as much sense as taxing Jews to pay for KKK dance parties (now that's an idea for a reality show).

"Another, more pressing way the Republicans and Democrats control the process came about in the late 1980s when the two major parties created the \'nonpartisan' Commission on Presidential Debates, and crowded out the League of Women Voters, which had run the general election debates up until then....

"It feels like 'the establishment' -- the corporations and power players -- don't care which of the two major candidates wins. They just want to be sure a Ron Paul, a Gary Johnson, a Dennis Kucinich and a Ralph Nader can't win, or, really, that their often unconventional ideas can't be heard. And until enough people make noise about it, inside the voting booth and out, it won't change."

October 5, 2012 - "Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson brought his anti-deficit, anti-war message to the University of Cincinnati Friday.

"Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, spoke to several hundred people inside Tangeman University Center’s Great Hall.... It’s part of a tour of about 20 universities for Johnson, who wore jeans and a T-shirt with a peace sign on it.....

"Johnson was not impressed with the debate Wednesday night between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, calling it 'much ado about nothing.

“'Elect either one and I’m going to suggest we’ll find ourselves in a heightened police state that needs to be rolled back,' he said."

Root still identified as Libertarian in media

by George J. Dance

October 4, 2012 - On September 6, former Libertarian Party vice-presidential candidate Wayne Allyn Root resigned all of his positions in the Libertarian Party, Libertarian National Committee (LNC), and Libertarian National Campaign Committee (LNCC), in order to endorse and campaign for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. However, a month later, Root is still being identified in the media as chairman of the LNCC.

For example, the biography appended to Root's October 4 FOX News opinion piece, "Mitt Romney is the smartest guy in the room," reads: "Wayne Allyn Root is a capitalist evangelist and serial entrepreneur. He is a former Libertarian vice presidential nominee. He now serves as chairman of the Libertarian National Campaign Committee. He is the best-selling author of "The Conscience of a Libertarian: Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gold & Tax Cuts." For more, visit his website: www.ROOTforAmerica.com."

Johnson accuses PA GOP of Watergate-style dirty tricks

Gary Johnson Campaign Accuses Pennsylvania Republicans Of "Watergate-Style Dirty Tricks" - Buzzfeed:

October 4, 2012 - "Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson's campaign is accusing the Pennsylvania Republican Party of illegally [trying to keep] him off the state's ballot.

"Specifically, the Johnson campaign alleges that the party hired a private investigator to pose as a FBI officer and visit people who had gathered signatures for them, offering them $2,000 in exchange for saying in court that the petitions they had gathered were falsified.

"The Johnson campaign's general counsel Alicia Dearn ... names a few witnesses who she says were notaries paid off by the state party to falsely confess that the petitions weren't real. All in all, the Republican party ended up contesting 40,000 of the Johnson campaign's claimed 50,000 signatures.

"A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office didn't respond to a request for comment about whether or not they had opened an investigation.

"'The claims are baseless,' said Pennsylvania Republican Party spokeswoman Valerie Caras in an email.... 'This is simply a distraction from their own questionable activities.'"

Virgil Goode will stay on Virginia ballot -Washington Post

Virgil Goode will stay on Va. ballot after Cuccinelli finishes probe - Virginia Politics - The Washington Post - Ben Pershing:

September 21,2012 - "Former congressman Virgil Goode Jr. will remain on Virginia’s presidential ballot after state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II concluded an investigation into fraud allegations leveled at Goode by the state Republican Party.... Republicans in Virginia and other states have sought to keep him off the ballot out of concern that he might take votes from Mitt Romney....

"A Washington Post poll of Virginia released this week showed Goode getting 2 percent support among registered voters, while Libertarian Gary Johnson got 4 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein took 1 percent.

"The Virginia State Board of Elections ruled in early September that Goode had qualified for the ballot after he submitted more than 20,500 signatures to the board. State law requires candidates to submit a minimum of 10,000 valid signatures, including at least 400 from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts.

"But the state Republican party filed a challenge to Goode’s submission, and party Chairman Pat Mullins contended that there were 'systemic problems' among Goode’s signatures that showed a “stunning disregard” for state law. Goode called the allegations 'ludicrous.'"

Two Sponsors Pull Out From Debates Over Exclusion Of Gary Johnson - U.S. News & World Report

Two Sponsors Pull Out From Debates Over Exclusion Of Gary Johnson - Washington Whispers (usnews.com) - Elizabeth Flock, U.S. News & World Report:

October 1, 2012 - "At least two of the original sponsors of the 2012 presidential debates have pulled their support over the exclusion of Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson, arguing that the commission which runs the debates is locked into a two-party outlook....

"Multinational corporation Philips Electronics and the women's organization the YWCA both dropped their sponsorship after being flooded with E-mails and letters from supporters of former Republican New Mexico Gov. Johnson, as well as two election watchdog groups, Open Debates and Help the Commission.

"'I've been trying this since 2004 ... and this is first time any sponsor has peeled off from supporting the commission,' says George Farah of Open Debates, who wrote the book No Debate: How the Republican and Democratic Parties Secretly Control the Presidential Debates. 'For this to happen on the eve of the first presidential debate is a remarkable act.'

"The Commission on Presidential Debates, which runs the debate logistics, didn't immediately respond to request for comment."

4 POTUS candidates confirmed for Oct. 23 debate

Gary Johnson Will Debate October 23 in Chicago, Though Obama and Romney Declined - Alex Marin:

October 1, 2012 - "The Free and Equal Elections Foundation announced that four U.S. 2012 presidential candidates have confirmed their participation in the upcoming presidential debate at the University Club of Chicago on October 23.

"Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Constitution Party candidate Virgil Goode, and Justice Party candidate Rocky Anderson are the ones who have confirmed their participation so far, even as the FEEF invited the top six presidential candidates of 2012, including Democratic incumbent President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee.

"'The four candidates participating represent a nice balance of right and left leaning candidates,' said Christina Tobin, chair of the FEEF. 'This debate will cover the real issues facing our country such as foreign policy, the economy, and civil rights, rather than topics that further divide us,' she added."

Romney facing Ron Paul's revenge in battleground Nevada - World - CBC News

Romney facing Ron Paul's revenge in battleground Nevada - World - CBC News - Megan Fitzpatrick:

October 1, 2012 - "A disaster. A train wreck. A mess. These are how people in Reno are describing the Republican party in Nevada, a state that used to be solidly red but has turned into a true swing state in recent years.

"Nevada's Republican party is in such disarray, thanks to the divisive primary battles, that Mitt Romney had to bring in his own people — known here as Team Nevada or sometimes Team Romney — to provide the campaign heft that the state party would normally give....

"But, at the moment anyway, Romney is facing an uphill battle in a battleground state that has six electoral college votes up for grabs. And the lack of tactical support from his own party has put him at a noticeable disadvantage."
