Santorum, Paul camps team up to get more delegates

Santorum, Paul camps team up to get more delegates | Seattle Times Newspaper - Associated Press:

March 31, 2012 - "The Rick Santorum and Ron Paul camps are teaming up to deny Romney delegates at the state convention, seemingly channeling those delegates to Santorum's turf, The Seattle Times reported Saturday

"Santorum state volunteer coordinator Graden Neal said the former senator from Pennsylvania directed the alliance.... Neal said the presidential candidate joined a conference call with Washington state campaign leaders on Wednesday.

"'And the Senator didn't mince words,' Neal wrote. 'In order for us to win the nomination in Tampa in August, we must deny Romney delegates to that convention. If ... Romney receives 1,144 delegates before the national convention, it is all over for our campaign. That is the reason why the Senator himself directed us to coalition with the Ron Paul delegates to deny Romney any state delegates'....

"A spokeswoman for the Paul campaign ... said in an email they are 'fully aboard' with the effort."

Ontario Court of Appeal legalizes brothels

Prostitution legalized: Ontario Court of Appeal greenlights brothels | News | National Post:

March 26, 2012 - "The Court of Appeal for Ontario has swept aside some of the country’s anti-prostitution laws saying they place unconstitutional restrictions on prostitutes’ ability to protect themselves.

"The landmark decision means sex workers will be able to hire drivers, bodyguards and support staff and work indoors in organized brothels or 'bawdy houses,' while 'exploitation' by pimps remains illegal.

"However, openly soliciting customers on the street remains prohibited with the judges deeming that 'a reasonable limit on the right to freedom of expression.'

"The province’s highest court suspended the immediate implementation of striking the bawdy house law for a year to allow the government an opportunity to amend the Criminal Code."

Ron Paul More Electable Than Mitt Romney in Latest Poll

PRESS RELEASE

“Paul is the strongest candidate with independents, tying Obama with them while the rest of the GOP field trails by 6-15 points.”

LAKE JACKSON, Texas, Mar 22, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul polls better against President Barack Obama in a head-to-head matchup than establishment-choice moderate Mitt Romney, according to a recent survey conducted by Public Policy Polling.

The poll found that Obama defeats Romney by 4 percentage points (48-44) and Newt Gingrich by 8 percent (50-42). While Santorum also joins Paul being within striking distance of the President by 3 points (48-45 and 46-43 respectively), Paul brings Obama a noticeable 2 percentage points further away from the 50 percent a candidate seeks to win on election day. Considering the +/- 3.3-percentage point margin of error, Paul in this poll is statistically tied for the presidency.

Reinforcing the electability case for Paul is that he ties Obama among independent voters, while Romney loses the largest voting segment by 6 percent, Santorum by 8 percent, and Gingrich by 15 percent -- a cause for concern whether Paul’s three rivals would even be competitive come November.

While many polls have shown Paul to be the most competitive Romney alternative, it also shows Paul to be making substantial progress and momentum for a general election bid. The new poll reveals that Paul is narrowing the gap between himself and Obama by 5 percentage points since last month’s PPP poll.

Other notables are that among one of the fastest growing voter segments, the Hispanic vote, Paul takes a full third of the Hispanic vote against the sitting President, with no other candidate able to come within 5 points of Paul’s Hispanic support.

Among the largest voter segment, self-identified independents, Paul is viewed favorably by 41 percent, whereas Romney and Santorum are relegated to a melancholy 29 percent and Gingrich further behind with a mere 24 percent favorability. These favorability numbers among independents translate into a clear Election Day advantage unique to Paul, where he would tie President Obama 42 to 42 for their votes.

Young voters, those 18 to 29 years in this poll, have long been considered to be in the President’s court. Yet, in a Paul-Obama matchup, these voters leave Obama and comparatively flock to Paul, backing him with a hefty 40 percent of their support. The range of youth support for Paul’s three competitors in a head-to-head with Obama ranges 22 to 29 percent, meaning about half of Paul’s margin to weak at best.

“The media may find an inevitability about Romney becoming nominee, but it is clear that with anyone other than Ron Paul as nominee a second term for Obama is the inevitability,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“When polls say ‘Romney is actually not the most electable Republican candidate,’ voters should flock to the candidate who can defeat Obama by winning on true conservative principle. That man is Ron Paul,” added Mr. Benton.

The PPP poll is based on telephone surveys of 900 voters and has a +/- 3.3-percentage point error margin.

Ron Paul gets a boost at Jackson County GOP caucus - KansasCity.com

Ron Paul gets a boost at Jackson County GOP caucus - KansasCity.com - Dave Hellig, Kansas City Star:

Mar. 24, 2012 - "Supporters of Republican presidential candidates Ron Paul and Mitt Romney combined forces to pitch a shutout at Rick Santorum in Saturday’s Jackson County GOP caucus....  1,000 caucus goers awarded Paul a majority of the county’s delegates to Republican congressional district conventions in April and the state convention in June. Romney got the rest.

"'We were totally railroaded,' said Mary Jane VanBuskirk, a Santorum caucus voter. 'And it’s not fair.'

"Caucus goers in both the Paul and Romney camps said they began to discuss an alliance last week, after the Clay County caucus Mar. 17. In that meeting, Romney and Santorum backers joined together to reject a slate proposed by the Paul campaign, leaving the Texas congressman without delegates....

"The final slate awarded 63 delegates to Paul and 81 to Romney for the 5th Congressional District convention in April. For the 6th District, Paul won all 35 available delegates....

"Twenty-five national delegates will be picked at the Missouri GOP convention in June. There, Paul will have 140 Jackson County delegates, while Romney will have the other 39, caucus officials said."

Ron Paul backers harvest support at 2 district caucuses in Seattle | Seattle Times Newspaper

Ron Paul backers harvest support at 2 district caucuses in Seattle | Seattle Times Newspaper - Jim Brunner:

March 20, 2012 - "On Saturday, the Paul forces dominated Seattle's 36th and 46th legislative districts' delegate elections — winning every single delegate to the state convention from those districts.

"'They just out-organized us,' said George Sjursen, a Romney supporter who attended the 46th District caucus at a Lutheran school in Northeast Seattle. 'I think the Paul people are really trying to take over the party, and they have the right to — it's a democracy.'

The same thing happened in the 36th District, where the Paul backers voted down a "unity slate" that would have split delegates among Romney, Paul and the other GOP presidential contenders....

"'This was a campaign that seriously worked the caucus system and knew what it took to win,' said Michael Young, a former King County Republican Party chairman who attended the 36th District caucus."

Is Ron Paul Secretly Winning The Missouri Caucus? - Business Insider

Is Ron Paul Secretly Winning The Missouri Caucus? - Grace Wyler, Business Insider:

March 20 - "Ron Paul's quiet pursuit of delegates appears to be paying off. Early results from Missouri's caucuses this weekend show that the long-shot libertarian candidate is significantly outperforming his rivals in the race for delegates. Senior campaign advisors tell Business Insider that Paul appears to have picked up the majority of Missouri's delegates....

"In Missouri, Paul's robust and aggressive organization has filled a void left by Santorum's lackluster operation. As in Iowa, Maine, and other states, Paul organizers have taken advantage of caucus chaos to stage legitimate takeovers of several county contests. In St. Charles County, outside St. Louis, the crowd was so unruly that party leaders were forced to shut down the caucus before delegates were elected, and two Paul supporters were arrested.

"On a conference call with reporters today, senior [Santorum] campaign strategist John Yob told reporters that they anticipate Santorum will win a majority of delegates in the Show Me State. But reports from the caucuses indicate that the Santorum campaign was completely outmaneuvered by the Paul campaign."

Caucus goes to Ron Paul - Branson Tri-Lakes News News Free - Caucus goes to Ron Paul: News Free

Caucus goes to Ron Paul - Branson Tri-Lakes News:

January 20, 2012 - "Saturday’s nonbinding Taney County Republican caucus was a decisive victory for Ron Paul, though the results are being formally contested to the state GOP by the losing side.... While Paul supporters scored major wins in other caucuses Saturday by partnering with the backers of frontrunner Mitt Romney, such was not the case in Taney County....

"The selection process was not without contention. A clear rift formed between Paul supporters and a group allied with the Taney County Republican Central Committee and Branson’s Tea Party Patriot HQ.... Tera Sukman, director of Tea Party HQ, expected the Paul contingent to be strong and said she spent $1,000 advertising and encouraging registered voters to attend. At least 240 were in attendance at one point Saturday....

"Sukman, who doesn’t support Paul, said she and the central committee are contesting the caucus’s results. She plans to send a letter to Missouri GOP chairman David Cole that details a number of Kershaw’s procedures she questions, including his insistence that presidential candidates not be discussed — though he had been echoed in that ruling by others."

Republican negativity toward Ron Paul « The Enterprise Blog

Republican negativity toward Ron Paul « The Enterprise Blog - Andrew Rugg:

March 14, 2012 - "Ron Paul has failed so far to win a major Republican primary or caucus in 2012, but he has managed to increase his vote share over 2008 in just about every state. In an election that has seen candidates rise and fall week after week, the stability of Ron Paul’s vote share stands out. He has also managed to give a strong voice to libertarians seeking electoral clout. But two important patterns appear in recent polling data and exit poll results. It’s far from clear that Paul has moored libertarians to the GOP ship for the long haul, or that Republicans want Paul to be an anchor for them."

Ron Paul’s strategy is authentic republicanism

Ron Paul’s caucus strategy is authentic republicanism | Washington Times Communities - Thomas Mullen:

March 19, 2012 - "Give yourself a test....  fill in the blank in the following sentence: The U.S. Constitution guarantees to every state in the union a _____form of government. If you are like ninety percent of the American electorate, you answered 'democratic' and you were wrong. The answer is 'a republican form of government.' There is a drastic difference between the two....

"In a democracy, the will of the majority is the law. Fifty-one percent of the vote empowers the winners to exercise any power they wish. Not so in a republic. The reason that the founders constructed a constitutional republic was to protect Americans from democracy....

"Ron Paul’s presidential campaign strategy is rooted in republicanism. He has deliberately focused his efforts on the states that hold caucuses instead of primaries because caucuses do not let the majority rule unchecked. Instead of merely pulling a few levers behind a curtain, caucus participants must complete a multi-tiered process that occurs for months after the popular vote before being chosen for the national convention. Who can doubt that these delegates are more informed than the typical primary voter? The essence of republicanism is for reason to triumph over the transient passion of the majority."

Police arrest Ron Paul backers at Missouri caucus

Police Intervene, Arrest Ron Paul Backers at Missouri Caucus - ABC News:

"Police and organizers shut down proceedings at one of Missouri’s largest caucuses today.... 'It’s like the Hatfields and the McCoys around here,' St. Charles County’s former GOP chairman told ABC News, after police arrived on-scene with a helicopter and removed Paul backers.

"In St. Charles, an exurb of St. Louis and one of the state’s largest GOP counties, Paul supporters sought to elect their own chairman and adopt their own rules when proceedings opened — both of which are part of standard caucus rules and procedure. But as they argued with the caucus chair, Paul supporters held video cameras — against caucus rules, according to a GOP official who was there — and things became contentious."

U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a Ron Paul protege, seeks a GOP 'revolution' | The Detroit News

U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a Ron Paul protege, seeks a GOP 'revolution' | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com - Marisa Schultz:

March 15, 2012 - "Amash flew to Texas in early 2010 to ask advice from someone with a history of bucking the establishment in Washington: U.S. Rep. Ron Paul.

"Paul explained to Amash that voting against the Republican Party in Congress may be a difficult path, but he encouraged Amash, saying sticking to the limits of the Constitution and fighting for civil liberties wins support among constituents. 'Liberty is popular,' Paul said, according to Amash.

"Since Amash, 31, was elected to Congress that same year he's managed to carry out Paul's advice, as the two congressmen are among those who most frequently vote against the GOP leadership in their steadfast following of the Constitution. OpenCongress.org said the two — and North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones — most often buck their party.

"Though Amash doesn't agree with Paul on everything, including nuances on foreign policy, tax breaks and earmarks, their political philosophies have been in step, albeit in the minority in Congress. OpenCongress.org said Amash and Paul cast similar votes 86 percent of the time."

Rick Santorum, Ron Paul On Track To Get Most Of Iowa's Delegates

Rick Santorum, Ron Paul On Track To Get Most Of Iowa's Delegates - Jon Ward, Huffington Post:

March 15, 2012 - "Rep. Paul (R-Texas) is currently estimated by The Associated Press to have zero delegates in Iowa. The AP numbers give former Sen. Santorum (R-Pa.) 13 delegates and former Massachusetts Gov. Romney 12. But Iowa Republican operatives scoffed at the AP figure.

"'Can I just be bold and tell you that they don't know what they're talking about,' Steve Scheffler, one of the state's three Republican National Committee members, told The Huffington Post. 'Our delegates are not tied to the percentages of who got what in the straw poll'....

"Santorum, banking on the fact that delegates are not 'bound' by rule or law in Iowa to vote for any presidential candidate ... has predicted he'll win the 'overwhelming majority' of Iowa's 28 delegates. But as he is likely to find out in many caucus states, Santorum faces a roadblock: Paul's passionate and organized supporters....

"'They're going to be feisty and they're going to fight,' said Craig Robinson, a former state GOP official.... 'I think that Santorum will get the delegates he should get but I think Ron Paul will get way more delegates than he should get,' Robinson said, adding that he worries that Paul could potentially give Iowa a black eye by winning the most delegates."

Koch brothers sue Cato Institute, president

Koch Brothers sue Cato Institute, president - The Washington Post - Allen McDuffee and T.W. Farnam:

March 1, 2012 - "Charles and David Koch filed a lawsuit Wednesday for control of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank in Washington.... The lawsuit exposes a power struggle for one of Washington’s premiere policy centers, which has been funded by millions in contributions from the Koch brothers’ foundations since its founding....

"Crane released this written statement:

"'Charles G. Koch has filed a lawsuit as part of an effort to gain control of the Cato Institute, which he co-founded with me in 1977. While Mr. Koch and entities controlled by him have supported the Cato Institute financially since that time, Mr. Koch and his affiliates have exercised no significant influence over the direction or management of the Cato Institute, or the work done here.

"'Mr. Koch’s actions in Kansas court yesterday represent an effort by him to transform Cato from an independent, nonpartisan research organization into a political entity that might better support his partisan agenda. We view Mr. Koch’s actions as an attempt at a hostile takeover, and intend to fight it vehemently in order to continue as an independent research organization, advocating for Individual liberty, limited government, free markets and peace.'

"Cato is one of the largest think tanks in Washington, with a $39 million budget in 2011, according to its tax form. It espouses an ideology of limited government and free-market economics."

Ron Paul skips Southern primaries, hopes for strong finish in Hawaii | Texas on the Potomac | a Chron.com blog - Samantha Wagner:

March 13, 2012 - "While the other GOP candidates focused on the Alabama and Mississippi primaries, Paul used his resources in Hawaii, keeping with his strategy of focusing on caucus states. Seventeen of the 20 Hawaii delegates are up for grabs in caucuses tonight.

"The libertarian Republican from Lake Jackson did not visit the islands himself, but instead sent his son Ronnie as a surrogate. The Paul campaign also aired a 30-second television advertisement over the weekend, highlighting his “Plan to Restore America.” The positive ad makes no reference to any other candidate, but instead touts Paul as the 'visionary who predicted the financial crisis' and the 'leader with a plan to solve it.'"

Johnson Optimistic About Libertarian Presidential Campaign [VIDEO] - Merrimack, NH Patch - Tony Schinella:

March 7, 2012  - "Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, one of 11 candidates seeking the Libertarian Party presidential nomination, made a campaign stop in Concord on March 7....

"Johnson met with about 25 people at the party’s new office on North Main Street. For nearly two hours, the candidate answered questions about his policy positions and how he planned to run his campaign. Johnson said he was focusing on gaining as much 15 percent in the polls in order to qualify for a place in the national debates. Currently, he’s polling as high as 9 percent, Johnson said. After getting on as many ballots as possible, he’ll be attempting to raise money via the federal public finance system and then, hopes to get at least 5 percent in the national election in order to secure as much as $90 million in public financing for a 2016 campaign. Johnson also suggested he might run again at that time."

Kansas caucuses: Ron Paul seeks breakthrough - latimes.com

Kansas caucuses: Ron Paul seeks breakthrough - latimes.com - John Hoeffel::

March 9. 2012 - "Hoping to improve on his third-place finish in the Kansas caucuses in 2008, Ron Paul was scheduled to make three campaign stops on Friday and planned to visit four caucuses on Saturday to deliver five-minute synopses of his libertarian agenda.

Citing the nation's wars, its struggling economy and its failing educational system, Paul told more than 400 sign-toting supporters in the state capital: 'These problems could be solved by just following the Constitution, and that is what we really need.'

Paul delivered his paean to limited government from the stage of the Topeka Performing Arts Center".... The Texas congressman, who has an organized campaign in Kansas, was introduced as 'the champion of the Constitution' by a supporter who urged: "We must stand up and be counted'....

Four years ago, Paul won 11% of the vote, finishing behind Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Ariz. Sen. John McCain, the eventual nominee. He won more than three times as many votes as the fourth place finisher, Mitt Romney, who is the GOP front-runner in the delegate count.

Roger Stone: Gary Johnson 2012: Letter From California

Roger Stone: Gary Johnson 2012: Letter From California:

March 8, 2012 - "I have long considered myself a Libertarian Republican. I have written extensively about gay marriage as an issue of constitutionally required equality, the expensive and fruitless folly of the 'War on Drugs,' abortion rights, and individual liberty. On February 13th 2012, I formally left the GOP to become a member of the Libertarian Party. I intend to support former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson as the Libertarian candidate for president.

"Many of my Republican friends have incorrectly chided me claiming that support for Johnson will merely reelect Barack Obama by siphoning votes from eventual Republican nominee Mitt Romney. This is wrong. Romney will lose a two-person race to Obama. Johnson, a more-than-credible candidate with a distinguished record of cutting spending and taxes and fostering a job boom during his eight years as governor, will ultimately pull votes from both Republican and Democratic nominees."

Ron Paul's In-It-To-Win-It Strategy Is "Not Far-Fetched," Campaign Manager Says - NCPR News from NPR

Ron Paul's In-It-To-Win-It Strategy Is "Not Far-Fetched," Campaign Manager Says - NCPR News from NPR - Liz Halloran, North Country Public Radio:

March 7, 2012 - "Jesse Benton, Paul's national campaign chairman, ... spoke with us Wednesday.... Here's what Benton had to say about a range of issues,Here's what Benton had to say about a range of issues....

"On how the campaign's in-it-to-win-it posture seems highly improbable, given the post-Super Tuesday state of play.

"It's not far-fetched at all. Most of the delegate projection is simply that, speculation based on how people think delegates will be allotted based on performance in non-binding straw polls. They're going to be elected through the state convention process. It's our strategy to attack those state conventions, move through that convention process and capture delegates that way. The reporting of delegate attainment is largely skewed by the media right now.

"On the point, beyond collecting money, of staying in long after nomination race is decided, as Paul did in 2008....

"The money that we're raising we're spending very, very aggressively to win delegates.... Dr. Paul is going to stay in this race either until he's the nominee or another candidate has 1144 bound delegates. We see a brokered convention situation as very likely. There's a real possibility we can block any other candidate from winning 1144 delegates."

The Ron Paul Moment - Reason Magazine

The Ron Paul Moment - Reason Magazine - Brian Doherty:

April 2012 - "For Ron Paul, a victory in 2012 doesn’t necessarily mean 270 electoral votes, or even 1144 delegates to the Republican convention. Unlike most candidates, Paul can succeed in a run for president without winning, by changing the establishment’s attitudes toward his libertarian stances. This unusual position provokes taunts from journalists and Republican establishmentarians alike. Don’t Paul and his delusional supporters know he can’t win?

"Paul doesn’t expect to win, necessarily. He’s a sober, reasonably calculating politician with decades of experience pushing radical libertarian ideas. When ABC News asked the candidate in January if he sees himself in the Oval Office when he lays his head down at night, he replied, 'Not really.' Yes, Paul keeps winning re-election to his seat representing Texas’ 14th Congressional District, generally by a wider margin each time. But the national GOP had little room for his constitutionalist libertarianism in a decade of George W. Bush, the PATRIOT Act, and nonstop overseas wars. That was exactly the reason Paul decided to run for president in 2008."

How Ron Paul's McGovernite strategy can win on Super Tuesday … and beyond – Telegraph Blogs

How Ron Paul's McGovernite strategy can win on Super Tuesday … and beyond – Telegraph Blogs - Tim Stanley:

March 6, 2012 - "Today’s Super Tuesday primaries give Ron Paul a rare chance to shine. There are 49 delegates up for grabs in Virginia, and Paul is the only candidate to have filed against Mitt Romney. How well he does will be the first real field test of the Paulite constituency.

"The libertarian is ... looking ... for a strong performance in ... caucuses in small states, [where] it’s easier to out-organise the opposition and leverage his activist muscle into a victory.

"This was the Ron Paul strategy from the very beginning. He never expected to win anything in the early rounds (except, perhaps, Iowa). Instead, he hoped to pull in a consistent 20 to 30 percent of the vote in every contest – snagging the odd caucus here and there. If he’s never seemed depressed in interviews by his results thus far, it’s because everything is sort of going to plan. The only real disappointment was Maine, which he stood a chance of winning."

Ron Paul focuses on North Dakota in quest for 1st state victory in GOP presidential race | The Republic - Dale Wetzel, Associated Press:

Mar. 5, 2012 - "BISMARCK, N.D. — In a state that typically receives more in federal spending than it pays in taxes, unabashed small-government cheerleader Ron Paul has done the most campaigning, drawn the largest crowds and attracted the biggest share of political donations among Republican presidential candidates.

Paul's best chance for his first 2012 victory may come Tuesday in North Dakota, which is holding party caucuses at more than 50 locations including ... the Bismarck Civic Center, where North Dakota Republicans will hold their state convention later this month.

"Paul is even planning a last-minute trip to North Dakota Tuesday night to speak at the Fargo Republican caucuses, which will include activists representing 10 of the state's 47 legislative districts."

Ron Paul draws big crowd in Sandpoint | Herald Times Reporter | htrnews.com - Nicholas K. Geranios, Associated Press:

Mar. 5, 2012 - "SANDPOINT, Idaho (WTW) — Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul drew an estimated crowd of 1,200 people in this small town on Monday to hear his Libertarian-tinged themes of smaller government, an end to the Federal Reserve and more individual freedoms.

The mix of young and old supporters was a sign that his campaign continues to gather support, Paul said at the Bonner County Fairgrounds in this town of 7,000 in the Idaho Panhandle.

'"Four years ago if I came here I would not have drawn 100 people,' Paul told reporters after the rally, held the day before Idaho holds its presidential caucuses.

"Paul is hoping for victory in at least one of the caucus states — Idaho, Alaska and North Dakota — on Super Tuesday."

Ron Paul defies predictions, scores six delegates in Wyoming caucus | The State Column

Ron Paul defies predictions, scores six delegates in Wyoming caucus | The State Column:

March 2, 2012 - "2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul gained six delegates as a result of winning 21 percent of the vote in the Wyoming caucus ... if the next stage of the Wyoming nominating process goes as planned, Dr. Paul will take at least six of the 26 delegates tied to the caucus process with him to the Republican National Convention....

"The vote total of 439 votes cast for Ron Paul out of 2,108 total votes cast was especially notable in that the Paul campaign had no paid staff on the ground in Wyoming. In addition, the organization purchased no advertising and held no events, yet the candidate and campaign have stunned establishment expectations by winning five of 23 counties."

Ron Paul: Here's why I'm not winning primary states - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

Ron Paul: Here's why I'm not winning primary states - Political Hotsheet - CBS News - Lindsay Boerma:

March 2, 2012 - "SPOKANE, Wash. - Rep. Ron Paul on Friday told a crowd here that the reason he's not winning primary states is because 'changing a hundred years of history takes a little bit of time.' But the Texas congressman said he 'expects to do real well here' in Saturday's caucus.

"Paul, who has yet to win a state, is seen trailing GOP presidential rivals Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in several polls coming out of the Wolverine State. But the process, a nonbinding caucus that selects its delegates after the straw poll, has tended to do well for Paul in the past, thanks to his core of loyal supporters.

"'I know we've always had good support here, we always have enthusiastic crowds,' he said following a rally at the Spokane Convention Center that drew around 1,000 people. 'The system lends itself to the people who are energetic and will participate, so I'm cautiously optimistic, but I have no number that I can give you.'

Responding to a recent Washington Post article calling him 'desperate' for his first state win, he said, 'I never feel desperate about it ... and actually, our strategy is that you can come in second and third a lot of times and start accumulating [delegates], and even some places where we weren't first, we're gonna come in first with the number of delegates in some of these states, because we know how the system works.'"

Bob Barr: Libertarians should vote for Gingrich

Bob Barr: Libertarians should vote for Gingrich - Steve Nelson, The Daily Caller:

February 27, 2012 - "Former Georgia Republican Rep. Bob Barr supports Newt Gingrich’s campaign for president.... Barr was elected to Congress in 1994 and worked alongside Gingrich as he became Speaker of the House. Barr left office in 2003 and in 2008 ran as the Libertarian Party’s presidential candidate, receiving more than 500,000 votes nationwide.

"Explaining his support for Gingrich, a politician not often considered a libertarian darling, Barr told The Daily Caller, 'I’m very comfortable and happy supporting Newt,' adding, 'it’s not to say that other candidates like Ron Paul don’t have very good ideas'....

"He said he has some policy differences with Gingrich, but finds his political track record reassuring.... 'Under Newt’s leadership we balanced the federal budget, we cut taxes significantly and we reformed welfare substantially and permanently,' he said. 'Those three things stand out as irrefutable evidence that Newt is committed to and knows how to accomplish goals that are important to libertarians and conservatives because they shrink the size of government and empower the people and businesses and states.'"
