Gary Johnson Gains Among Latino Voters in New Fox News Poll - Elias J. Atienza, The Libertarian Republic:

August 13, 2016 - "Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson is making inroads with Latino voters, according to a new poll released by Fox News Latino. In the poll, Johnson is tied with Donald Trump statistically, with 16 percent of Latinos saying they would vote for him. Seventeen percent said that they would vote for Trump and 60 percent said they would vote for Hillary Clinton....  Johnson almost doubled his total among Latino voters. In the last Fox News Latino poll, he was polling at 9 percent....

"Johnson has already snagged a GOP advisor as his Latino Outreach Director. In addition to this, a PAC was formed by two prominent Latinos, former Congressman Juan-Carlos Planas and former National Puerto Rican Coalition CEO Rafael Fantauzzi."

Fusion to Host Libertarian Town Hall This Wednesday: Josh Guckert, The Libertarian Republic:

August 13, 2016 - "Fusion announced on Friday that it will host the Libertarian ticket of vice presidential candidate William Weld and presidential candidate Gary Johnson for a town hall this Wednesday, August 18 at 8 p.m. ET. It will be hosted by Jorge Ramos and Alicia Menendez.

"This will mark the third of four thus-far scheduled Libertarian town halls. CNN hosted the first two, on June 22 and August 3, and Fox Business (with John Stossel) will host the fourth on August 26.

"The Fusion channel, which is about three years old, is a Hispanic news and satire channel owned by Univision. Listings for the channel can be found on its website. It hosted Hillary Clinton for a town hall in January. Donald Trump previously agreed to talk with Ramos, but has not yet scheduled the interview."

May 19, 2015 - "The prevailing Hispanic alignment to the political left is far from set in stone.  After all, modern day libertarianism was born, in many ways, in the Iberian Peninsula and followed the conquistadors to the New World.  Although some Hispanics might not realize it, a love of liberty is very much a part of our cultural heritage....

"It is no coincidence that the first use of the word 'liberal,' the internationally accepted term for a libertarian, was first used in the 1800s in the context of the Spanish struggle for liberation from Napoleon and his absolutist rule. It is not, in fact, an 'Anglo' word like some scholars would have you believe.

"But the libertarian tradition in Spain begins much earlier than the 19th century; it predates the Enlightenment and even the signing of the Magna Carta.

The Charter of León, issued in 1020 under Alphonso V, for example, granted municipalities judicial and administrative jurisdiction and recognized individual rights.  This check of absolute monarchal power was in place 200 years before the signing of the Magna Carta and was considered a precedent for the United States Constitution by many of the Founders, including John Adams.

"Centuries later, the School of Salamanca would have similar influence and as former Mont Pelerin Society President Leonard Liggio noted in his essay Liberty and Morality: The Neglected Hispanic Tradition, 'modern economics, human rights, and international law were founded in the Iberian universities of the 16th and 17th centuries.'

"Latin America, too, played an important role in the development of libertarian thought. The debates over the humanity and rights of Native Americans (think Bartolomé de las Casas) influenced John Locke and the American Founders.

"Scholars such as Juan de Mariana, Roberto Bellarmine, and Francisco Suárez, both directly and indirectly, helped shape the minds of the fathers of modern day libertarianism. It is for good reason that F.A. Hayek believed that the Spanish Scholastics were the forerunners of the Austrian School of Economics....

"Whether we be first, second or third generation immigrants, we should recognize that we are in the United States because of a lack of political and economic freedom in our native countries. We know that authoritarianism and limited market freedom does not work. It is, without a doubt, why my parents and I left Ecuador in the 1990s.

"It is for this reason that we must be part of the movement to stop the astronomical growth of government that the Bush and Obama years brought to this country. We need to be part of the demographic that elects a politician that stands for limited government and free markets. We are, after all, the original libertarians."

September 8, 12014 -"Libertarianism isn’t confined to caucasians anymore. The Pew Research Center recently released a study on who in America describes themselves as libertarian while being able to accurately identify what the label actually means. Of the total demographic, 12 percent of respondents who identified as libertarian were white, unsurprisingly the largest demographic population. However, Hispanics self-identified as libertarian at almost the same rate, 11 percent. By comparison, only three percent of blacks fell into the same category (other demographics were not included in the final results). Libertarians also tend to be young; Millennials are the largest group of libertarians, with the Silent Generation making up the smallest...."

"While Latinos are more likely to support big government, it is important to bear in mind that these Hispanics tend to be older, first-generation immigrants. Since immigration from Mexico has all but reversed due to America’s poor economy, most of the Hispanic population growth in the US comes from second- and third-wave Hispanic Americans. In other words, Millennial Hispanics, unlike their parents, grew up as native-born Americans.

"This population is huge; fully 65 percent of American Hispanics are between the ages of 22 to 35, and they’re filtering into common traits found in libertarianism. For example, they graduate college at higher rates than any other demographic group, including whites. Additionally, Pew Research shows that younger Hispanics don’t particularly care for the 'Hispanic' or 'Latino/a' label....

""Hispanic Millennial support for Obama dropped nine percent between 2013 and 2014. Their trust in bigger government is dwindling.... The disappointment with Obama’s presidency runs even deeper, pushing Hispanic Americans away from mainstream political camps....

"Libertarianism also appeals to issues that matter deeply to Hispanic Millennials and young people in general: a greater emphasis on civil liberties. Hispanic Millennials overwhelmingly support gay marriage. They want to legalize marijuana. And of course, they show greater support for relaxing laws on unauthorized immigration, a libertarian cornerstone."
