Alberta bill to limit power of regulatory bodies

The Alberta government has introduced Bill 13 to limit the power of professional regulatory bodies fto control their members' speech outside the workplace.

Alberta’s Bill 13 — the end of woke professional regulators? | Justice Center for Constitutional Freedoms | John Carpay:

November 24, 2025 - "Premier Danielle Smith and her government should be applauded for introducing Bill 13, the Regulated Professions Neutrality Act, the first of its kind in Canada. This proposed new law seeks to protect free speech for lawyers, teachers, doctors, and other professionals who, if they wish to earn a living, depend on a licence from their regulatory body. For many years, regulatory bodies across Canada have been abusing their authority by imposing woke ideology on nurses, psychologists, and other professionals.

"Dr. Jordan Peterson was subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the College of Psychologists of Ontario over his political commentary on Twitter (now X). Nurse Amy Hamm was found guilty of professional misconduct by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives for having stated publicly that there are only two sexes. In Saskatchewan, nurse Leah McInnes faced disciplinary proceedings over exercising her Charter freedom to express her opinions about mandatory vaccination policies. BC teacher Jim McMurtry was fired for questioning the popular narrative — thus far not supported by any evidence — that 215 children are buried at or near the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

"It's high time for new laws in every province to rein in the ideologues who abuse their regulatory authority by censoring opinions they disagree with. New laws are needed to protect the freedom of professionals to express their opinions publicly, including their freedom to identify themselves as a doctor, lawyer, teacher, nurse, etc., when speaking publicly.

"Free speech is not the only issue. Of even greater importance, Bill 13 (the Regulated Professions Neutrality Act) amends existing provincial legislation to clarify that a regulatory body exists solely to enforce standards of competence and ethics. Professional Codes of Conduct and the teaching of professional competence should never be used as vehicles for promoting neo-Marxist ideals like 'equity, diversity, inclusion' and so-called 'anti-racism' and “cultural competence” indoctrination. Bill 13 is an important step towards addressing these problems and restoring public trust.... In a move that strikes a dagger into the heart of woke ideology, Bill 13’s preamble goes on to declare 'that all persons are equal in dignity and should not be arbitrarily assigned value or blame based on their personal identity characteristics or beliefs.'

"The Regulated Professions Neutrality Act will apply to over 40 regulatory bodies in Alberta. They will be required to apply and practice the principle that a person’s value should never be determined on the basis of that person’s race, colour, ancestry, national, or ethnic origin, religious belief, political belief, sex, etc. Nor should anyone be considered biased, oppressive, advantaged, or morally inferior because of a personal characteristic, according to Bill 13. Nor should anyone bear responsibility for actions committed by other people belonging to the same ethnic or religious group. Alberta’s Law Society and College of Physicians and Surgeons, for example, will no longer be able to apply notions of collective guilt and inter-generational guilt to lawyers and doctors. Regulatory bodies will no longer be able to use 'equity, diversity and inclusion” as the pretext for giving people adverse or preferential treatment because of a personal characteristic like skin colour or sexual orientation.

"Under Bill 13, the education and training required by a regulatory body for its members must relate only to professional competence and ethical standards. Education and training may no longer seek to dictate — expressly or by implication — the range of acceptable or unacceptable opinions or beliefs on any political, historical, social, or cultural issue, or on a matter of conscience. For good measure, the Bill mandates that professional education and training can no longer address “cultural competency,” “unconscious bias,” or “diversity, equity, or inclusion.” Bill 13 appears to be a direct response to the Alberta Court of King’s Bench judgment in Song v. Law Society of Alberta, in which Justice Kachur ruled that the Alberta Law Society had the right, under the Legal Profession Act, to mandate 'cultural competency' training (para. 111).

"Last but not least, the Regulated Professions Neutrality Act requires courts to interpret this new law on a standard of correctness, not a standard of reasonableness. Essentially, this means that regulatory bodies must apply the new legislation narrowly and properly to achieve the goal of protecting free expression, and the goal that education and training be focused on ethics and professionalism (to the exclusion of ideology). Professional bodies will not be able to skirt the law by claiming in court that their own “reasonable” efforts are somehow good enough."

Two provincial gov'ts question equalization formula

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador supports the Alberta premier's call for changes to the federal government's equalization formula.

Newfoundland Liberal gov backs Smith’s call for equalization rethink | The Counter-Signal | Quinn Patrick:

May 10, 2025 - "Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has garnered the support of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liberal government for a reset on how the federal government distributes equalization payments.

"Smith has called on Alberta to stop subsidizing provinces with productive economies like Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia.... 'That was never the intent of equalization, and it needs to end,' said Smith.

"Spokesperson for Newfoundland’s Liberal government Greg Gill responded by telling the National Post that he agreed with Smith’s sentiment on Thursday. 'Equalization is intended to ensure … fairness for all citizens. Currently, this fairness is not achieved for Newfoundland and Labrador,' said Gill.

"[Gill] said the equalization program hurts residents by negating the high cost of delivering services to the remote areas of the sparsely populated province.... Additionally, he argued that the program currently penalizes the province for developing offshore oil and its other natural resources.

"Last year, Newfoundland filed a court challenge against the federal program on the basis that it doesn’t make good on its constitutional purpose. The lawsuit seeks relief over several issues: the exclusion of service delivery costs in payment calculations, the fiscal capacity cap, the inequitable distribution of excess equalization program funding and the gross domestic product growth ceiling....

"Smith said in March that Alberta would no longer agree to 'subsidizing other large provinces who are fully capable of funding themselves.'

"Of the $26.17 billion in equalization payments earmarked for 2025-26, Quebec and Ontario will take the lion’s share for a combined $14.15 billion. Quebec alone will get $13.57 billion.

"On Monday Smith called for Albertans to begin receiving equitable per capita federal transfers and equalization payments at the same rate as Ontario, Quebec and B.C."

AB gov't challenging federal Net-Zero regulations

The Alberta government is adding a constitutional challenge of the interim Net Zero regulations to the multiple court challenges they have filed against the federal government.

Alberta to Challenge Constitutionality of Ottawa’s Net-Zero Electricity Regulations | Epoch Times | Carolina Avendano:

May 1, 2025 - "Alberta is taking Ottawa to the province’s Court of Appeal over the federal government’s net-zero electricity regulations, arguing the rules overstep provincial jurisdiction and could drive up costs while increasing the risk of power outages. The province announced the legal action during a press conference on May 1, where Premier Danielle Smith described it as 'another step to protect Albertans’ livelihoods' from federal policies the province says 'threaten' the reliability of its electrical grid and could increase electricity prices by 35 percent....

"The Clean Electricity Regulations are part of Ottawa’s plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. They set limits on carbon dioxide emissions for generation units that use fossil fuels, with the stated aim of achieving a low-carbon economy 'at the pace and scale needed to drive clean growth, strengthen our competitiveness and attract more major investments.'

"The federal government last December shifted its target for a fully decarbonized electricity grid from 2035 to 2050.... Meanwhile, the current framework, finalized in December 2024, provides interim targets generators must meet by 2035, which Smith has also called 'unreasonable and unattainable,' arguing they 'will still make electricity unaffordable for Canadian families.'

"Ottawa says the regulations are needed to protect the environment and human health from the effects of climate change. 'Cutting pollution in communities across the country is good for our climate, economy, health, and well-being,' said the government in December 2024....

"During her May 1 address, Smith cited an analysis by the Alberta Electric System Operator, which suggests the net-zero electricity regulations would make the province’s electricity system more than 100 times less reliable than the provincial adequacy standard by 2038. The report also suggests the federal regulations 'will fail to deliver meaningful reductions in carbon emissions in Alberta'....

"Alberta currently relies on natural gas for 75 percent of its power generation, according to provincial estimates. The premier has previously said the province has a 'quicker and cheaper' alternative solution to achieve a carbon neutral power grid by 2050, but that it would require Ottawa to give up attempts to 'interfere' in Alberta’s governance..... The province has filed multiple court challenges against Ottawa, many of them related to federal climate policies.

"'Canada’s constitution is absolutely clear,' [Alberta Justice Minister Mickey] Amery said at the May 1 press conference. “The provinces have exclusive jurisdiction over the development, conservation, and management of sites for the generation and production of electrical energy.' Ottawa says the regulations are established under the authorities of the Canada Environmental Protection Act, 1999, which provides legislative basis for certain federal environmental and health protection programs."

Misinformation allegations withdrawn over Covid statements by Alberta doctor

Last year Alberta's College of Physicians and Surgeons charged pathologist Dr. Roger Hodkinson with making "inaccurate or misleading" statements that breached the CMA Code of Ethics  during the Covid pandemic, for which he could have lost his license. Hodkinson admitted breaching the Code but not to any inaccuracy, and received a simple caution.

Outspoken but not inaccurate: medical tribunal makes no finding of misinformation by Dr. Hodkinson | The Democracy Fund (news release):

April 4, 2025 - "Dr. Roger Hodkinson will retain his medical license following a hearing before the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), which resulted in minimal sanctions against the outspoken pathologist. Dr. Hodkinson faced allegations of unprofessional conduct regarding 17 public statements made in November 2020 and April 2021. His remarks were critical of public health officials and presented an alternative perspective on COVID-19, including the efficacy of masking and vaccines.

Dr, Roger Hodkinson (courtesy TDF).

"Initially, the CPSA alleged that his statements were inaccurate or misleading. However, following negotiations with lawyers for The Democracy Fund, the CPSA limited its claims to arguing that Dr. Hodkinson’s comments violated the ethical code and extended beyond the scope of a general pathologist. While Dr. Hodkinson did not concede that any of his statements were false, he acknowledged that his criticisms of other physicians technically breached the Code of Ethics and Professionalism. He also admitted that he should have clarified that his views were outside the scope of a general pathologist.

"The case was resolved through a joint submission, resulting in Dr. Hodkinson receiving a caution and being required to complete an online course on influence and advocacy.

"Alan Honner was retained by TDF to represent Dr. Hodkinson. 'Dr. Hodkinson acknowledged that he could have used more measured language when critiquing physicians with whom he disagrees,' said Honner. 'However, he did not concede that any of his statements were misinformation, nor did the tribunal make such a determination.'

"Dr. Hodkinson now joins prominent health professional Dr. Jordan Peterson, who[m] their respective regulatory bodies have cautioned for making public comments that diverge from the official narrative.

"Last year, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pledged to review the province’s regulated professions to ensure that the freedom of speech of professionals is adequately protected. She also committed to legislative changes to ensure that professionals are regulated based on competence and conduct rather than speech.

"Dr. Hodkinson strongly supports safeguarding free speech for health professionals. 'The essence of progress in all scientific matters, including medicine, is debate regarding scientific findings,' he stated.

"Dr. Hodkinson earned his medical degree from Cambridge University and completed his pathology residency in Vancouver. He has served as an assistant clinical professor at the University of Alberta and as past Chair of the Royal College specialty examination in pathology. With several publications and awards to his name, he had until now maintained a spotless disciplinary record over his 50-year career."

Sabine runs against Canada's authoritarian shift

David Sabine is running for the Libertarian Party of Canada in the Calgary riding of Airdrie-Cochrane.

Apr 2, 2025 - "David Sabine is Airdrie-Cochrane's Libertarian Party candidate in the 2025 Federal Election.

QUESTION: What is your political experience and why have you chosen to run in this election cycle with the Libertarian Party?

ANSWER: I ran for school trustee with TVDSB before returning west, my sister serves as a councillor in Alberta, my father pursued an NDP candidacy in Saskatchewan in the 1970s, and my grandparents supported Tommy Douglas as volunteers. While politics hasn’t been my career focus, my lifelong exposure equips me to run as a candidate, amplifying the voices of Libertarians in Airdrie-Cochrane.

"Canada’s authoritarian shift over the past nine years — marked by excessive taxation, market intervention, an overreaching administrative state, censorship, and erosion of property and civil rights — concerns me deeply. Libertarian principles can influence the political dialogue for the better....

Q: What will you and your party do to stand up to President Trump’s tariffs and 51st state rhetoric?

A: President Trump’s tariffs and rhetoric are disruptive, but they only gain traction because of Canada’s deep economic vulnerabilities and societal fracture. The economic hardship expected from President Trump’s tariffs is a small fraction of the damage done by the Liberal party these past nine years. And decades of mismanagement and corruption by previous Canadian governments have left our economy fragile and Canadians divided. The calls for separation in Quebec and Alberta grow by the day. Canadians are burdened by trillions in debt and unfunded liabilities, over-regulation, excessive taxation, and policies that stifle economic growth. The chaos south of the border is not the root problem; it’s a symptom of our governments' own failures, amplifying the urgency for a bold shift in how we govern ourselves and engage with the world.

Canada’s unique advantage of bordering the world’s largest economy is not a liability — it is our greatest opportunity. Treating the U.S. as an adversary is shortsighted and the divisive rhetoric from Canada’s mainstream parties is eroding a historically vital relationship beyond repair.

A Libertarian Party approach would prioritize diplomacy and principled negotiation with the US President and state governors to secure genuine free trade with them. This isn’t just about lowering U.S. tariffs — it’s about dismantling Canada’s own self-inflicted barriers. We’d eliminate interprovincial trade restrictions that choke domestic commerce, scrap pipeline bans that kill investments in our energy sector, and end the equalization mandate that punishes productive regions. Supply management, which drives up costs for staples like dairy, cheese, eggs, butter, chicken, and turkey, would be abolished. Canadians have been sold a myth of free trade with the U.S., but our own massive tariffs and quotas on these essentials prove otherwise — keeping prices artificially high and Canadian consumers trapped.

Q: What is the biggest issue facing Canadians that you wish to tackle?

A: Libertarians fundamentally reject central economic planning, whether it’s Trump’s heavy-handed edicts or the suffocating policies of Canada’s recent governments. Both represent the same flaw: a belief that bureaucrats and politicians can micromanage the prosperity of citizens. Ottawa’s market distortions, bloated administration, and disregard for individual liberty, mirrors the authoritarian tendencies we criticize abroad. By slashing these domestic barriers, we’d not only counter U.S. pressure but rebuild an economy resilient enough to thrive, regardless of who occupies the White House.

The Libertarian Party is also deeply concerned about the plight of our country's elderly. Taxpaying Canadians are strained under a shrinking GDP per capita, with socialism’s economic fallout driving taxes up, costs up, and doctors out. Health professionals, lured by far higher salaries and greater freedom elsewhere, are fleeing Canada’s punitive taxes and red tape in droves. Though healthcare is provincial jurisdiction, the next federal government must act with urgency — bolstering our currency, freeing markets to boost productivity, and refining immigration and foreign policy to let hardworking citizens prosper. Canada is facing an unprecedented crisis, driving the nation toward bankruptcy and saddling future generations with an unpayable tax burden.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: The mission of the Libertarian Party of Canada is to reduce the responsibilities and expense of government. This, so that we may each manage our lives to mutually fulfill our needs by the free and voluntary exchange of our efforts and property for the value that best realizes happiness for ourselves, our families, and our communities."

Danielle Smith's strategy for avoiding tariff war

On January 20, Alberta Premier Denielle Smith unveiled her recommended strategy for avoiding a trade war with the United States.

Premier Danielle Smith: Update on potential US tariffs | Government of Alberta (news release):

January 20, 2025 - Alberta Premier Danielle Smith issued the following statement welcoming the U.S. tariff reprieve and calling for policy action:

"Alberta is pleased to see that today, President Donald Trump has decided not to impose tariffs on Canadian goods until the matter is further studied.

"We appreciate the implicit recognition that this is a complex and sensitive issue with serious implications for American and Canadian workers, businesses, and consumers, given the integration of our markets, as well as our essential energy and security partnership.

"Avoiding tariffs will preserve hundreds of thousands of jobs in every sector in Canada and the United States. For example, refusing to impose tariffs on Canadian energy preserves the viability of dozens of American refineries and facilities that process Alberta crude, as well as the jobs of tens of thousands of Americans they employ.

"Despite today’s promising news, the threat of U.S. tariffs remains very real. As a country, we must take the following immediate steps to strengthen and protect our economic and security partnership with the United States, and to avoid the future imposition of tariffs:

  1. Focus on diplomacy and refrain from renewed talk of retaliatory measures, such as imposing tariffs on exports or cutting off energy supplies to the United States. Having spoken to the President, as well as dozens of governors, senators, members of Congress, and allies of the new administration, I am convinced that strong, consistent diplomacy and working in good faith on shared priorities is the path to a positive resolution with our American allies. The worst possible response to today’s news would be for the federal government or other provincial premiers to declare 'victory' or escalate tensions by needlessly threatening the United States.
  2. Negotiate ways to increase what Canadians and Americans buy from each other. For example, the United States should consider buying more oil, lumber, and agricultural products from Canada, while Canada should consider buying more gas turbines and military equipment from the United States, as well as the IT equipment needed to strengthen our AI data center sector. Finding ways to increase trade in both directions is essential to achieving a win-win situation for both countries.
  3. Redouble border security efforts. Over the next month, all border provinces should, either alone or in partnership with the federal government, deploy the necessary resources to protect our shared border from drugs and illegal migration.
  4. Announce a significant acceleration towards achieving the NATO target of 2% of Canadian GDP. This is clearly a shared priority that benefits both our nations. There is no excuse for continuing to lag behind.
  5. Addressing immigration channels and known loopholes that allow people hostile to Canada and the United States to enter our country, and restoring immigration levels and rules that existed when Stephen Harper was Prime Minister.
  6. Immediately repeal all federal anti-energy policies (production cap, Clean Electricity Regulations, Impact Assessment Act [Bill C-69]) and expedite preliminary approval of the Northern Gateway and Energy East projects."

Alberta "trans" bills passed in legislature

The Alberta government's "trans" bills have passed third reading in the provincial legislature.

Alberta passes laws to protect parental rights, ban child gender transitions | True North Wire | Isaac Lamoureux:

December 5, 2024 - "The Legislative Assembly of Alberta has passed a trio of bills that strengthen parental rights, promote fairness in sports, and prevent minors from undergoing irreversible gender transition procedures they may later regret. Bill 26, the Health Statutes Amendment Act, Bill 27, the Education Amendment Act, and Bill 29, the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, each passed their third reading and will come into effect following royal proclamation.... Alberta Premier Danielle Smith previously highlighted that the legislation would protect youth. 'The changes we’re introducing are founded on compassion and science, both of which are vital for the development of youth throughout a time that can be difficult and confusing,' she said...

"The Alberta government said that legislative amendments to ensure education continues during public health and states of emergencies will come into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. 'Additional regulatory amendments will follow, to provide school administrators more clarity and guidance on expectations for learning during emergencies. These would come into force at the same time as the legislative amendments, except for certain sections regarding school authority policies, which would come into effect on Sept. 1, 2025,' reads a statement from the Alberta government. “Further information regarding regulatory changes will be shared following the passage of the legislation.”

Do Alberta's new policies help or harm trans youth? | Power & Politics | CBC News | October 31, 2024:

Alberta legislation on transgender youth, student pronouns and sex education set to become law | CBC News | Andrew Jeffrey:

December 4,2024 - The Education Amendment Act, 2024 [Bill 27], the Health Statutes Amendment Act [Bill 26] and the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act [Bill 29], first announced by Premier Danielle Smith in a provincewide video address in January, are set to become law. National advocacy group Egale Canada and the Alberta-based Skipping Stone Foundation confirmed Wednesday their intent to pursue legal action in response, arguing the legislation violates the constitutional rights of young 2SLGBTQ+ people.

"The changes [under Bill 27] include requiring children under 16 to have parental consent if they want to change their names or pronouns at school. Students who are 16 or 17 won't need permission, but schools will need to let their parents know first. Students would not be able to learn about sex education, gender identity and sexual orientation in school unless their parents have opted in to them receiving that instruction. Any third-party instructional material would need approval from Alberta Education before it is used in the classroom....

"[Bill 26] would also prohibit doctors from treating those under 16 seeking gender-affirming treatment through puberty blockers or hormone therapy. Physicians would be prohibited from performing top and bottom gender surgeries on minors.... Schools would have to inform parents [under Bill 27] when kids ask to change pronouns....

"[Bill 29] would limit membership on female competitive sports teams to athletes who were female at birth. The bill will ban transgender athletes from competing in female amateur sports and require school and organizations to report eligibility complaints. Smith has said the government will work with leagues to set up coed or gender-neutral divisions for sports.

"According to the province, the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act is anticipated to take effect fall 2025, while the amendments to the Education Act will take effect on proclamation, which is anticipated in September 2025. The Health Statutes Amendment Act is expected to come into effect in the coming months....

"The Saskatchewan government used the notwithstanding clause to guard similar legislation. The clause allows a government to temporarily override certain sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Smith said she doesn't believe she'll need to invoke the notwithstanding clause to shield the policies from legal action, and that the legislation will be seen as reasonable and evidence-based. But she declined to say if she would use the clause to keep the laws on the books if the court challenges are successful."

Alberta joins U.S. states' energy pact

Alberta premier Danielle Smith has signed on to the 12-state Governors' Coalition for Energy Security.

Alberta joins U.S. energy coalition to secure North America’s energy future | True North Wire | Isaac Lamoureux:

November 17, 2024 - "Alberta has become the first non-U.S. [political entity] to join a United States energy pact featuring 12 states that had already signed onto the coalition. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith made the announcement Thursday, personally thanking Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu for inviting her, along with President-elect Donald Trump. Smith also thanked the other ten governors involved.

"Smith said that Alberta’s role in North American energy security is vital as the largest crude oil and natural gas supplier to the United States.

With 200 billion barrels of recoverable oil, 200 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas, significant natural gas liquids and ample pore space for carbon capture, Alberta’s contribution is set to grow even further as we look to work with the Trump Administration and other U.S. partners to increase our pipeline capacity to our greatest friend and ally, the United States.... We are proud to collaborate with this coalition of allied states in advancing energy security, reliability and affordability for Americans and Canadians....

"Alberta currently accounts for 56% of oil imports into the United States, double Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq combined.

"Landry said that the pact’s members share the goal of enhancing and protecting energy security, which he said will lead to lower energy costs, increased reliability, sustainable economic development, and wise management of energy resources and the environment. '

“I welcome Premier Smith and the insights she will bring as the leader from a fellow energy-producing province that, like my state, is under a federal system of government where national imperatives are not always aligned with state or provincial interests,' said Landry.

"The United States is the largest trading partner with Alberta, having $188 billion in bilateral trade in 2023. Energy products accounted for more than 80%, approximately $133.6 billion, of Alberta’s exports to the United States in 2023....

Alberta is a global leader in emissions reduction technologies and clean energy solutions. 'The province has captured about 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide through carbon capture, utilization and storage technology, and has the ability to support the U.S. in developing new infrastructure and supply chains for future energy markets in the areas of hydrogen, renewables, small modular reactors and others,” reads Alberta’s press release.

"The newly renamed Governors’ Coalition for Energy Security listed its goals in the press release issued by the Governor of Louisiana[:] ... 'to ensure families and businesses have the right to choose the energy they need, to minimize permitting and other regulatory barriers, limit expensive energy mandates, focus on affordability and reliability of energy infrastructure, and to coordinate to positively manage energy resources and the environment,' reads the press release....

"Smith issued an additional statement on Friday, saying she won’t wait for the [Canadian federal] Liberals to strengthen energy trade.... \

Alberta’s energy sector is a cornerstone of North America’s prosperity and we’re ready to work with our partners in the United States, especially @realDonaldTrump, to ensure that remains true.... Alberta’s resources are critical to energy security, economic growth, and the strong ties between our countries. Together, we can build a future that benefits both sides of the border — because when Alberta succeeds, the United States thrives. Let’s power that future, hand in hand.

"The 12 signatory states included in the energy pact are Louisiana, New Hampshire, Indiana, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Dakota, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Virginia."

Parks Canada denied firefighters entry to Jasper

A parliamentary committee was told this week that private firefighters who had driven to Jasper National Park to fight the July wildfire were turned away by Parks Canada.

Properties engulfed in fire in Jasper, July 27, 2024. Radio Canada.

Parks Canada firefighting coordination decisions 'need to be made a lot quicker': fire services contractor | CTV News | Jeremy Thompson & Craig Ellingson:

October 8, 2024 - "A private firefighting service provider says crews contracted to work to protect buildings in and around the town of Jasper during July's wildfire emergency were denied entry to the national park for most of a day. Kris Liivam, the president of Arctic Fire Safety Services, says unclear communication from emergency managers hampered efforts by his crews, who thought they had written permission to enter the national park on July 25, the day after a powerful wildfire destroyed a third of the townsite but with the fire risk still high despite heavy rain.

"At the time, a small Arctic Fire Safety Services crew was already in Jasper, under contract to provincial Alberta Wildfire, working to protect the town. Meanwhile, in Hinton, more of Liivan's team was trying to enter the park -- more than a dozen trucks and about 50 firefighters who had been hired to protect specific properties including Marmot Basin, the Jasper Sky Tram and several hotels.

"'We thought we had everything in place, for permission to go in,' Liivan told CTV News Edmonton on Tuesday. 'Once we got to the first RCMP stop, we were denied entry and we had to turn around and head back to Hinton.'

"Liivam recently voiced his frustrations to a parliamentary committee looking into the Jasper wildfire, telling it his crews 'encountered numerous examples of Parks Canada fire management actively obstructing our activities and not providing us with relevant information on the fire.'

"A Parks Canada spokesperson says ... [that] 'they were eventually allowed in with specific instructions, and helped to fight the fire, which could have had far worse consequences without this swift and effective handling.'"

Shocking new Jasper wildfire revelations put blame on Parks Canada | True North | October 10, 2024:

How the tragic Jasper wildfire turned into just another political weapon | Calgary Herald | Don Braid:

October 8, 2024 - "The great Jasper wildfire of July and August simmers on.... Over two weeks, MPs have been sniping at each other in meetings of a parliamentary committee on environment and sustainable development....

"Throughout, federal Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault [has] claimed that Ottawa could not have done better either before or during the fire. At any suggestion that Ottawa was lacking, he trotted out climate change as the true culprit. It was clear more than once that a big ugly fire in Alberta is a great boost for his climate agenda. Focusing on climate also turned minds away from serious questions about Ottawa’s performance as the power in charge of both prevention and firefighting.

"For instance, why was a convoy of firefighters with 20 trucks turned away from the park gate like tourists who can’t afford a pass? That actually happened. Private firefighter Kristopher Liivam testified that his crew wasn’t there on spec. There had been discussions with officials. They clearly understood they would be admitted. But Parks Canada turned firefighters away from a fire. That was three days after the fire began, just as things were getting really dangerous.

"Alberta deputy premier Mike Ellis, who spoke to the hearing, said in an interview Tuesday that he was 'very concerned' to hear about the episode. 'Certainly, our position would be that we wouldn’t be turning away anybody' if Alberta had been part of joint command.... Denied any authority, Alberta needed federal permission to bring in helicopters, water bombers, surveillance drones, bulldozers and other equipment. The refusal to grant joint command was both bizarre and churlish."

Alberta doctor charged over Covid comments

Alberta virologist Dr. Roger Hodkinson has been charged with professional misconduct by the provincial regulatory body for giving his medical opinion on the coronavirus during the pandemic.

TDF represents Dr. Hodkinson in misconduct hearing over COVID statements | The Democracy Fund (news release):

July 24, 2024 - "The Democracy Fund (TDF) is defending Dr. Roger Hodkinson in his legal fight with respect to several complaints brought against him by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Dr, Roger Hodkinson (courtesy TDF).
"The CPSA has charged Dr. Hodkinson with professional misconduct, alleging that he wrongly commented on the efficacy of masks and social distancing in preventing the spread of COVID-19, the usefulness of vitamin D in protecting against COVID-19, the necessity and unqualified safety of COVID-19 vaccines, and the COVID-19 testing protocol.

"The CPSA's Amended Notice of Hearing setting out the allegations can be found here.

Dr. Hodkinson's lawyer, Sarah Miller, said: 'The CPSA continues to prosecute Dr. Hodkinson for expressing his opinions on the government's response to COVID-19. We are proceeding to a five-day hearing in November for the CPSA to hear and determine whether Dr. Hodkinson breached his obligations under the Code of Ethics and Professionalism. The hearing represents a considerable use of resources to exercise authority over Dr. Hodkinson's public expression of his closely held beliefs.'

Coutts protesters not guilty of murder conspiracy

A jury has acquitted Chris Carbert and Anthony Olienick of conspiracy to murder RCMP officers at the 2022 border blockade in Coutts, Alberta, but convicted them of lesser weapons and mischief charges.

NOT GUILTY! Jury acquits Coutts border blockaders of conspiracy to commit murder | Rebel News | Ezra Levant:

August 02, 2024 - "Chris Carbert and Tony Olienick had been accused of conspiracy to commit murder against RCMP officers at the 2022 trucker convoy blockade at the Alberta-Montana border crossing in Coutts, Alberta. Both men were denied bail and have spent almost two and a half years in prison awaiting trial.

"Carbert and Olienick were two of the so-called Coutts Four who all faced related charges. The two other men, Chris Lysak and Jerry Morin, accepted a plea bargain from prosecutors, agreeing to plead guilty to minor firearms charges in return for time served.

"The arrest of the Coutts Four was a spectacular and theatrical event, with the RCMP creating a dramatic display of seized firearms, purportedly belonging to the arrested men. Justin Trudeau immediately invoked the Emergencies Act, declaring a form of martial law, citing the Coutts arrests as his pretext. The use of that law was later found to be unconstitutional by [a] Federal Court.

"The Lethbridge jury did find Carbert and Olienick guilty of relatively minor offences, including possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose and mischief over $5,000. Olienick was also found guilty of possessing an explosive device, which he had argued was for industrial purposes. Given the lengthy time spent in custody, it is unlikely that the men will serve any more time serving a sentence."

Coutts defendants found NOT GUILTY of conspiracy to murder, guilty of other charges | Rebel News | August 3, 2024:

The Coutts Trial Verdict: A Silence That Speaks Volumes | The Canadian Muse | Gather 2030, Substack:

August 03, 2024 - "On August 2, Tony Olienick and Chris Carbert were acquitted of the serious charge of conspiracy to commit murder, but were found guilty of several other charges, including weapons possession and mischief. This verdict, particularly in the context of political dissent and civil liberties, merits a broader conversation.... The silence from major media sources raises important questions about the role of journalism in a democratic society.

"The Coutts trial highlights significant issues regarding government authority, the right to protest, and the implications of the Emergency Act. These are not merely legal matters; they touch upon the fundamental rights of Canadians and the very fabric of democracy....  They symbolize a moment of reckoning for how dissent is perceived and managed in Canada.

"The lack of media coverage risks marginalizing these critical discussions, leaving many Canadians unaware of the potential consequences for their own rights and freedoms. In a democracy, silence can be as powerful as speech. The absence of coverage around the Coutts trial serves as a reminder of the responsibility that both the media and citizens share in holding power to account....

"The Coutts trial is more than just a legal proceeding; it is a reflection of the ongoing struggle for justice and the protection of civil liberties. As the nation processes the implications of this verdict, the call for a more robust dialogue around these issues is louder than ever. It is time for all voices to be heard, and for the media to play its crucial role in fostering an informed and engaged citizenry."

Can we learn from the burning of Jasper?

Canadians are mourning the destruction by fire of Jasper, Alberta. But we also need a serious reappraisal of Canadian forest management practices; otherwise it won't be a matter of whether more communities are lost to wildfires, but of when.

Governments Must Act Now on Proper Forest Management or Wildfires Will Get Worse | Epoch Times | Cory Morgan:

July 26, 2024 - "Millions of Albertans, and indeed Canadians, are mourning the destruction of a site where they have memories of recent and childhood trips. We can be thankful that no lives have been lost, but the loss for residents of Jasper is unimaginable.... When the Jasper fires have been extinguished and the rebuilding process begins, we must have a serious appraisal of our forest management practices and act as soon as possible. Otherwise, it won’t be a matter of if another community is lost to a wildfire, it will be a matter of when.

"To begin with, it must be accepted that fires in boreal forests are natural and inevitable. It has only been in the last couple of centuries that humans have entered the scene and meddled with the natural cycle of burning and rejuvenation of forests. What we are seeing today is the consequences of deferring the fires that would have naturally burned. The forests have become overgrown, unhealthy, and cluttered with layers of extremely flammable deadfall. Forests in that condition burn hot and fast, leading to fires that can’t be extinguished. Many communities in Canada are surrounded by forests like this and are but one spark away from a disaster.

"It’s not reasonable to just let fires burn naturally in populated areas. That means we must manage these forests and our communities to reduce the chances of wildfires and mitigate the damage they cause. This has been done to a degree in areas, but not adequately.

"Jasper is a prime example. A mountain pine beetle infestation had previously killed thousands of acres of pine trees around the "townsite. Standing dead pine trees are extremely flammable, and experts were warning of the risk they presented to Jasper in 2018. A plan was formulated between the Alberta Forest Service and Jasper National Park officials to manage the forests, but it was rejected by the federal government. It’s not that the federal government wanted to see the area burn. They didn’t want to deal with the optics of bulldozers and loggers taking down tracts of forest in a scenic national park along with the haze and smoke prescribed burns would bring. The consequences of that deferral are being seen today.

"Municipal governments are loath to create buffers between forests and their townsites because residents enjoy the cozy feel of living next to the wilderness. Developers pitch communities that share space with nature and property owners will complain if bush is cut back. Cutting buffers in forests, doing prescribed burns, and clearcut logging may not look pretty, but it is all preferable to the devastation a fire will bring. Politicians must make the tough choices and impose fire mitigation measures upon communities, even if it upsets some residents....

"I worked as a surveyor for over 20 years in Alberta, and what I saw building up on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains was concerning, to say the least. In some areas, it is almost impossible to walk due to the volume of deadfall. If we don’t clear those zones out soon, a fire will and it will be a big one.

"Government jurisdiction and long-term changes in the climate are subjects worthy of discussion, and we doubtless will be having those discussions for years. In the meantime, we must act and safeguard our communities. We don’t have years to wait, and we will see more heartbreaking losses as we have with Jasper if we keep putting off the forest management that must happen."

"Pipe bombs" used in mining, Coutts trial told

A defense witness has testified that Coutts 4 defendant Anthony Olienick used homemade explosive devices, similar to the two "pipe bombs" police seized when they raided his Claresholm property, in his sandstone mining business.

'Firecrackers', 'not a big deal': Coutts Trial witness claims alleged pipe bombs were mining tools | Rebel News | Robert Kraychik:

July 17, 2024 - "Brian Lambert, a former business partner of Anthony Olienick's, testified on Monday, July 15 during Olienick's and Chris Carbert's trial in Lethbridge, AB, that he observed his former associate’s use of 'firecrackers' in the context of their joint operations mining sandstone. Lambert’s testimony relates to one charge against Olienick, that he unlawfully possessed an explosive device for a dangerous purpose.

"The Crown has alleged that two objects found on Olienick's property after his arrest on February 14, 2022, were 'pipe bombs'. Lambert described the 'firecrackers' he said he saw Olienick use years ago as explosives contained within tubes or pipes used for plumbing. He further described them as 'not a big deal' in the context of the world of explosives. He maintained that he would not choose to hold such an explosive in his hands.

"Carbert and Olienick are accused of conspiring to murder police officers during their time at the 2022 Coutts protest and blockade, a peaceful and civilly disobedient demonstration against the decrees, edicts, and orders issued by different levels of government and marketed as “public health” measures to reduce COVID-19 transmission. The two defendants are also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose. Both have pled not guilty to all charges against them.

"Lyndsay Butler, a country music singer, songwriter, and performer ... testified that she brought a guitar in a guitar case with her to the demonstration. The prosecution previously suggested that guitar cases were used to transport firearms for the purposes of executing a conspiracy to murder. Butler was also mentioned in certain text messages sent to and received by the defendants' phones during tbe Coutts protest that the Crown has alleged included coded language related to the alleged conspiracy....

"Corrie Turcott, an Albertan who spent 18 days at the Coutts demonstration, ... [testified] that she spent most of her 18 days in Smuggler's Saloon, a small restaurant in the border village that operated as a makeshift meeting center for protesters. She said she spent considerable time in the saloon’s basement, using it as a site to organize and store food and other donated consumables used by the demonstrators.

"The Crown has alleged that the saloon’s basement was used as a site to store a cache of firearms meant for use as part of a conspiracy to murder law enforcement personnel. Turcott testified that she did not observe any firearms in the saloon's basement."

Coutts conspiracy trial, week one

Week 1 of the trial of the Coutts 2  (Tony Olienick and Christ Carbert) on charges of conspiracy to murder police consisted mainly of testimony from three undercover RCMP officers.

Coutts Two Trial Begins With Evidence that is Primarily Hearsay | The Intrepid Viking | Roxanne Halverson, Substack:

June 20, 2024 - "[F]inally, on Thursday June 13, 2024 the trial of the Coutts Two, who had previously been known as the Coutts Four began in earnest.... On trial on charges of conspiracy to commit murder of police (RCMP members) are Tony Olienick and Chris Carbert. They are two Alberta men who were caught in a dragnet of RCMP operations and raids that occurred during the Coutts border blockade protest just outside of the border town of Coutts, Alberta, which was part of the larger Freedom Convoy protest which took place in Ottawa in February of 2022. Protesters were calling for an end to the draconian COVID mandates and restrictions that had been imposed on Canadians by the federal and provincial governments for two long years.

"Olienick and Carbert were arrested and charged with the conspiracy to murder police along with two other men – Jerry Morin and Chris Lysak. However, this past February, after spending 723 days in custody as they were denied bail, all the original charges against Morin and Lysak were suddenly dropped as they plead[ed] guilty to minor firearms offences.... All four of these men, according to the RCMP, were identified as ‘key’ members of a larger ‘cell’ of bad actors involved in a plot to overthrow the Canadian government. In media briefings the RCMP indicated that there were other ‘unidentified suspects’ of a purported ‘criminal organization’ that the four men allegedly belonged to. Yet, despite assurances by RCMP brass that these ‘unidentified suspects’ would also be rounded up through the intrepid investigative efforts of the RCMP, no such suspects were ever found, or were arrests ever made....

"So why, one might ask, has it taken two years to bring the case to trial? After all, under Canada’s justice system, the accused are entitled to a speedy trial. One would think that even a year’s delay in bringing a case to trial would seem unduly long, particularly when said suspects were not granted bail – in the justice system, where under the Trudeau government, bail is even granted to accused cop killers. Yet, now that it’s been two years no one has even batted an eye over this travesty. Not the justice system, not the government and certainly not the media....

"The Crown in its opening statements to the jury, which were widely reported in the mainstream media, who now have taken a sudden interest in the case after two years of wilfully ignoring it, were quite dramatic. The Crown prosecutor who gave the opening statement, Matt Dalidowicz told the jury that Olienick and Carbert had, indeed, conspired to kill police officers and believed they were justified in doing so.... According to the Crown, the RCMP faced a 'challenging situation' when the blockade began in January of 2020. He then went on to explain that ... they learned more through their undercover officers (UCO). Those would be three attractive female RCMP members they had assigned to investigate the activities at the Coutts blockade. Dalidowicz told the jury that these UCOs had ... 'discovered a plot to kill police officers, if police enforce the law to end the blockade'....

"But there is one fly in the ointment regarding the Crown’s assertions about this ‘plot'. It is predicated on the testimonies and evidence of what these three UCOs ‘uncovered’ and undoubtedly reported to their superiors, one would think. Yet, these police women, who were given this assignment, to investigate, infiltrate and gather evidence on any suspicious activities around the protest, used no wires or recording devices to record the conversations of, or with, any of the protesters. So, it is only their memories and perhaps notes of what they observed or heard that they are relying on.... Strangely enough as the mainstream media were recounting the testimonies of these UCO’s and their ‘conversations’, primarily with Tony Olienick, they didn’t think to mention that none of the evidence they presented could be backed up with recordings of said conversations. The were reporting it as though it did come from wiretaps or recordings, but that has been par for the course on the mainstream media’s laziness in reporting on this case....

"Because these RCMP members continue to operate as UCOs in other operations, their identities had to be protected, therefore they gave their testimonies in a separate courtroom where only the judge, lawyers, the jury, the defendants and the courtroom staff were present. The public and media remained in another courtroom where they could only hear the audio of their testimonies. During their testimonies they were asked whether the RCMP generally used wiretaps and body cameras during undercover operations, to which they replied they usually did. As to why they did not do so in Coutts, their only answer was that did not know, and that someone else would have to answer that question....

"The testimonies of the three seemed to focus in on Olienick who seemed to have interacted with them more than the other men. As a matter of fact they all indicated they had little, if any contact with Carbert, which causes one to wonder why he is on trial at all. Many of the things the UCOs testified to in their conversations with Olienick seemed to centre more on how he felt about the police presence there, rather than any particular plot against them. Any such words spoken by Oienick in that regard could also be open to misinterpretation and innuendo as was revealed under cross examination by the defence.

"But coming back to Chris Carbert, who[m] the UCO’s admit they had little if any contact with. Where or how does he fit into the picture? Well, the Crown’s problem is that ... in a ‘conspiracy’ charge, more than one person has to be involved in the plot. When Lysak and Morin were offered and took a plea deal, that left only Carbert and Olienick to keep the ‘conspiracy’ charge alive. So, it would seem that Carbert is being brought along simply to secure such a conviction. But if the evidence against Carbert is so thin, how can a jury possibly convict him? And if they can’t convict him, then how can they convict Olienick, alone, on a conspiracy charge? That seems to be quite a conundrum. How the Crown plans to tackle that conundrum remains to be seen."

Coutts conspiracy trial gets underway in Alberta

After being held in custody without bail for more than two years, Canada's Coutts 4 – now the Coutts 2, after charges were dropped against two of the alleged conspirators – are finally getting their day in court in Alberta.

Lawfare Comes to Canada as the Coutts Four Get Their Day in Court | Newsweek | Gord Magill:

June 18, 2024 - "A trial is currently underway in Canada, and the rights of every Canadian citizen are at stake. Tony Olienick and Chris Carbert are facing farcical charges stemming from their participation in a peaceful protest against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's COVID-19 response.... Olienick and Carbert are the remaining two of a group of political prisoners arrested in Canada and held without bail since the Freedom Convoy in 2022

"The Freedom Convoy was a populist revolt against Trudeau's authoritarian approach to COVID-19 in the form of a mass act of civil protest led by truck drivers. To combat this peaceful protest, the largest of its kind in Canadian history, Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act to suspend civil liberties across Canada, freezing bank accounts and laying numerous spurious charges against hundreds of peaceful protesters. Olienick and Carbert were arrested February 13, 2022 in Coutts, Alberta, at a Freedom Convoy protest site the day before Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act, along with two other men.

"The group came to be known as the Coutts Four, and they stand accused of some damning charges — conspiracy to murder police officers among them. The charges are completely bogus, yet throughout Canada, early reporting about the men painted them in such a negative light that that many people have presumed them guilty. Their assumed guilt is tied up with Trudeau's larger effort to legitimize the use of the Emergencies Act against peaceful protestors; an inquest into Trudeau's suspension of civil rights surrounding the Freedom Convoy hinges on a conviction in the case of the Coutts Four.... Complicating this effort is the fact that two of the four men were released from prison and had all the original charges against them dropped....

"Olienick and Carbert have been kept in a form of carceral purgatory called 'remand' since being arrested for exercising their once-protected rights to protest. In this purgatory, where they do not have the normal rights afforded convicted felons, they have been denied access to necessary medical care, among other indignities, and Olienick had spent over 90 days in solitary confinement, which is considered torture in most civilized societies.

"Olienick and Carbert's trial finally got underway earlier this month. What little coverage there has been of the trial proceedings has focused on testimony from the undercover officers who were casing the protesters. There is nothing by way of corroborating evidence or recordings of what the accused are alleged to have said, and the Crown's case relies entirely on a negative interpretation of their words based entirely on claims made by the undercover officers.

"The story comes apart under the lightest scrutiny: A group of young female undercover officers were ostensibly sent in to investigate protesters tarred as extremists, who their superior officers suspected of having weapons and an intent to kill them. Yet these officers were sent in with no wires or recording devices of any kind, and no weapons to defend themselves. Does this not raise some pertinent questions? Who authorized this undercover operation? Was it not convenient to make these allegations, given that the day after these men were arrested, the Emergencies Act was invoked? Why has it taken 28 months for such an important case to get under way? Why did two of the co-accused, Jerry Morin and Chris Lysak, have all of the original charges against them dropped?...

"Media coverage of this case has done a great disservice to the Canadian public in not asking these questions. Instead, the media has been cheerleading for a conviction before all the evidence is in by repeating the unsubstantiated claims of the officers and failing to report any countervailing evidence or context crucial to understanding the story....

"If the Canadian government can level ridiculous and baseless charges at people, throw them in jail for over two years while denying them bail for trumped up political reasons, and then have their friends in the media smear the accused, what right to protest does anyone have? What right to free speech, or to any other civil liberties? The trial of these men in Alberta, like the trial of Donald Trump, raises serious questions about our democracy. It is clear that those in our ruling class would rather control the narrative so that you don't ask them."

CapitalismAndMorality conference held in Calgary

Capitalists confront sacred cows in Calgary | Western Standard | Fergus Hodgson:

May 27, 2024 - "CapitalismAndMorality has been gathering for 15 years in Vancouver, with as much of a penchant for political incorrectness as for libertarian thought. Since 2023, Calgary has hosted its own one-day franchise, advertised by local organizers Darcy Gerow and Clayton Reeder as bringing 'together some of the finest minds to discuss the economics and philosophy of liberty.' This weekend's event — held Saturday at the Danish Canadian Club — had a lineup of seven speakers and a four-man panel. They lived up to CapitalismAndMorality's rebel reputation for the roughly 60 attendees.

"Event founder Jayant Bandhari addressed Canada's changing demographics and soaring immigration. A native of India, Bandhari contends that Indian culture will eventually dominate Canada, given the prevalence of Indian and other South Asian immigrants. Bandhari dismissed European civilization as on its last legs, leaving East and Southeast Asia to fill the vacuum.

"Retired Manitoba judge Brian Giesbrecht added spice to the menu by explaining the myth of residential-school mass graves. The Assembly of First Nations, Giesbrecht said, 'has milked this issue for all it's worth.' He added that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to back the notion of indigenous genocide was likely his worst decision among many bad decisions.

"The final panel, 'Secession, Separatism, Independence,' was led by Gerow and demonstrated the welcome for different perspectives: from anarcho-capitalists to classical liberals and sovereigntists. Michael Wagner of Edmonton is an established Christian-conservative columnist with the Western Standard and an author who advocates Alberta separatism. Flanking him were this article's writer (Fergus Hodgson) and Cory Morgan, a show host and fellow Western Standard columnist but a self-described libertarian. They are the authors of Time to Leave (2024), Financial Sovereignty for Canadians (2024), and The Sovereigntist's Handbook (2023), respectively....

Corey Morgan speaking at CapitalismAndMorality conference. Photo by Western Standard.

"Brett Oland, CEO of Bow Valley Credit Union ... conveyed his concerns about central-bank digital currencies — given the prospect of surveillance and social control — and endless inflation of fiat currencies. His organization holds precious metals on its balance sheet, and he is building parallel, competitive currencies for Albertans....

"Libertarian Party leader Jacques Boudreau traveled from Petrolia, Ontario, for the event. An actuary by trade, he spoke about Canada's precarious finances. He is pessimistic about the political class facing up to the crisis, concealed via unfunded liabilities and layering across levels of government. He foresees dwindling returns on pensions and higher taxes and/or reduced social services.... Boudreau thought the limited attendance was 'shameful' given 'the brainpower of the people who presented … It would make any Liberal MP's head explode'....

"Organizer Gerow shared that he was ambivalent about politicians speaking at the event. However, he acknowledged that the previous year's event had a higher attendance on account of leader of the People's Party of Canada Maxime Bernier's presence. Gerow wants the event to be educational and not promote a specific political party. Boudreau respected that request and his presentation, 'Government & Immorality,' had barely a mention of his party affiliation. That fit with an audience without any apparent consensus affiliation of its own. Likely, attendees included apolitical types among supporters of the United Conservative Party, People's Party, Libertarian Party, and secessionist-inclined parties.

"Gerow was still pleased with the turnout and said the attendees tended to be the core of the Calgary Libertarian Meetup Group, which hosts monthly gatherings. His hope is to cultivate a free-thinking, supportive community via in-person events, in addition to whatever educational material is conveyed at the same time. For those who cannot be there, CapitalismAndMorality has shared content online for free, thus echoing it well beyond the audience on the day."

Alleged Coutts ringleaders convicted of mischief

Coutts Three Verdict: A Warning to Protesters Who Act as Liaison with Police | Frontier Centre for Public Policy | Ray McGinnis, Senior Fellow:

April 19, 2024 - "Twelve jurors have found the Coutts Three guilty of mischief over $5,000 at a courthouse in Lethbridge, Alberta. Marco Van Huigenbois, Alex Van Herk and George Janzen will appear again in court on July 22 for sentencing. Van Huigenbois, Van Herk and Janzen were each protesting at the Coutts Blockade in 2022. A blockade of Alberta Highway 4 began on January 29, 2022, blocking traffic, on and off, on Alberta Highway 4 near the Coutts-Sweetgrass Canada-USA border crossing. The protests were in support of the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa. Protests began due to the vaccine mandates for truckers entering Canada, and lockdowns that bankrupted 120,000 small businesses....

"On the day of February 14, 2022, the three men spoke to Coutts protesters after a cache of weapons had been displayed by the RCMP. These were in connection with the arrest of the Coutts Four. Van Huigenbos and others persuaded the protesters to leave Coutts, which they did by February 15, 2022.

"During the trial numbers of RCMP officers conceded that the Coutts Three were helpful in their interactions with the law. As well, there didn’t seem to be any truth to the suggestion that Van Huigenbos, Van Herk and Janzen were leaders of the protest. RCMP officer Greg Tulloch testified that there were a number of 'factions' within the larger protest group. These factions had strong disagreements about how to proceed with the protest. The Crown contended the Coutts Three were the leaders of the protest....

"Tulloch recalled how Van Huigenbos and Janzen assisted him in getting past the 'vehicle blockade to enter Coutts at a time during the protest when access to Coutts from the north via the AB-4 highway was blocked.' Tulloch also testified that Janzen and Van Huigenbos helped with handling RCMP negotiations with the protesters. Tulloch gave credit to these two 'being able to help move vehicles at times to open lanes on the AB-4 highway to facilitate the flow of traffic in both directions.' During cross examination ... Tulloch stated that he noticed two of the defendants assisting RCMP with reopening the highway in both directions. Honner said in summary, '[Marco Van Huigenbos and George Janzen] didn’t close the road, they opened it.'

"Mark Wielgosz, an RCMP officer for over twenty years, worked as a liaison between law enforcement and protesters at the Coutts blockade. Taking the stand, he concurred that there was sharp disagreement among the Coutts protesters and the path forward with their demonstration. Rebel News video clips 'submitted by both the Crown and defence teams captured these disagreements as demonstrators congregated in the Smuggler’s Saloon, a location where many of the protesters met to discuss and debate their demonstration.' Wielgosz made several attempts to name the leaders of the protest in his role as a RCMP liaison with the protesters, but was unsuccessful....

"Canada’s Criminal Code defines mischief as follows in Section 430:

"Robert Kraychik reported that 'RCMP Superintendent Gordon Corbett … cried (no comment on the sincerity of this emoting) while testifying about a female RCMP officer that was startled by the movement of a tractor with a large blade during the Coutts blockade/protest.' This was the climax of the trial. A tractor moving some distance away from an officer in rural Alberta, with blades....

"No evidence was presented in the trial that Van Huigenbos, Van Herk and Janzen destroyed or damaged property. Officers testified they couldn’t identify who the protest leaders were. They testified the defendants assisted with opening traffic lanes, and winding down the protest.

"By volunteering to liaise with the RCMP, the Crown depicted the Coutts Three as the protest leaders. Who will choose to volunteer at any future peaceful, non-violent, protest to act as a liaison with the policing authorities? Knowing of the verdict handed down on April 16, 2024, in Lethbridge?"

Smith wants same pharmacare deal as Quebec

Alberta premier Danielle Smith wants her province to have the same ability to opt out of the federal pharmacare plan, with full compensation, enjoyed by Quebec.

Smith says NDP, Liberals treating Albertans like second-class citizens with pharmacare | Western Standard | Jonathan Bradley:

February 27, 2024 - "Alberta Premier Danielle Smith blasted NDP leader Jagmeet Singh for saying Quebec can opt out of pharmacare and receive a larger health transfer payment, but Alberta could not. 'I’m tired of the NDP-Liberal coalition treating Albertans like second class citizens,' tweeted Smith on Tuesday. 'The same rules should apply equally across Canada'....

"Smith said Singh did not secure universal pharmacare. Rather, he secured a deal covering diabetes drugs and birth control. Alberta’s pharmacare plan sponsors more than 5,000 prescription drugs and provides coverage for many low-income people, seniors and people with disabilities....

"Alberta will take the additional healthcare dollars same as Quebec and invest it into improving our own provincial prescription drug program,' she said.

"Smith said on Monday there might be a case for helping Albertans with the cost of prescription drugs.

"An Alberta Health Services spokesperson said if any changes came from the Canadian government proposal, Alberta would opt out. The Alberta left wing said this decision was a tragedy."

Alberta town votes to remove its Pride crosswalk

The town of Westlock, Alberta, will lose its seven-months-old Pride-colored crosswalk, and its Pride flags this summer, following a plebiscite that passed with less than 51% in favor. The full story ...

Pride Month a success for Alberta towns this year, despite an increase in backlash | CBC News Edmonton | Ariel Fournier:
July 4, 2023 - "On a sunny evening last week, a crowd of revellers celebrating Pride Month in Westlock, Alta., painted a rainbow crosswalk for the first time in the town's history. Despite some worries that the event could be disrupted by protests, it went off without a hitch....

"The crosswalk project had been proposed by the Thunder Alliance, a group that supports members of the LGBTQ community at R.F. Staples Secondary School in the town 90 kilometres north of Edmonton [Alberta's capital]. In May, councillors voted unanimously to support painting the crosswalk on 106th Street, between Westlock's town hall and the Royal Canadian Legion. But at a council meeting June 12, some people showed up to voice angry objections....

"'We did receive a lot more pushback than we anticipated,' Heidi Mills, a school social worker and a lead teacher with the Thunder Alliance, said at the crosswalk-painting event. 'Despite all of the hate that we've received, look at this crowd,' she said, gesturing to the group of more than 200 people. 'It's giving me goosebumps right now.'"

Alberta town proposes bylaw to restrict Pride flags, crosswalks | Western Standard | Jen Hodgson:
November 29, 2023 - "The Westlock, AB city council has moved to restrict Pride flags and crosswalks in favour of displaying only municipal, provincial and federal insignia. The crosswalks and sidewalks would return to simple white paint on grey pavement. On Monday, Westlock town council decided to let the residents vote on the potential bylaw, which will take place in February.

"The decision came after a group of residents brought a petition to council in September decrying the Pride colours painted on town infrastructure, which was done in June by the 'gay-straight alliance' at local high school R.F. Staples Secondary. The painting initiative was endorsed by city officials at the time. Deputy Mayor Murtaza Jamaly told CTV News they 'thought it was a great opportunity to demonstrate we are an inclusive and welcoming community'....

"At the council meeting Monday, Jamaly said roughly 10% of the town's population, which is 4,921 people, signed the petition.... 'There wasn't a way that we could find ourselves passing that at council's table,' he said. 'Therefore under the legislative process, it goes to a plebiscite vote.'"

Town north of Edmonton could ban Pride crosswalks, flags | CityNews | November 28, 2023:

Irwin demands Westlock support Pride flags, crosswalks | Western Standard | Jonathan Bradley:
November 30, 2023 - "Alberta NDP MLA Janis Irwin (Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood) said Westlock, AB, needs to keep allowing Pride flags and rainbow crosswalks. 'Banning a Pride flag or rainbow crosswalk won’t make queer and trans people go away,' tweeted Irwin on Wednesday. 'But it will send a message that they’re less safe to be who they are in your community.' Irwin went on to say she remembers the day Westlock painted a rainbow crosswalk and how powerful it was to see people uniting....

"Stonewall Riots survivor Fred Sargeant said there 'are absurd tweets and then there's laughably absurd tweets.... No one is less safe because a distracting crosswalk is gone,' said Sargeant.... Queens’ Speech host Clive Simpson called Irwin 'f*cking ridiculous.' 'Some of us managed to survive the times when there were NO RAINBOW FLAGS ANYWHERE,' said Simpson."

Trudeau says Poilievre waging culture war with gender ideology | Western Standard | Jonathan Bradley:
February 22, 2024 - "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and conservative politicians of attacking transgender people to deflect from their success at creating division, anger and toxicity. BREAKING: Westlock votes to ban Pride crosswalks, other flags by 24 votes | Town and Country Today | Kristine Jean:
February 22, 2024 - "Westlock residents have voted to ban Pride crosswalks and allow the town to only fly flags representative of the municipal, provincial, or federal governments. Hundreds of local citizens went to the polls Thurs. Feb. 22 and voted to support bylaw 2023-14 in a plebiscite.... A total of 663 residents voted yes to ban Pride crosswalks and flags, while a total of 639 residents voted no to the bylaw, a difference of just 24 votes....

"Westlock Mayor Jon Kramer said in a press release that council did not support the proposed bylaw and felt it went against council's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. 'This plebiscite is binding, and as such, the bylaw does restrict how we are able to show this commitment. However, we will continue to find ways to embrace those in our community who need a helping hand, including marginalized groups..... That won’t stop, it will just take on a different form. We know the Town of Westlock is a welcoming community and that will not change.'"
