While Canada's Liberal government, including  cabinet minister Gary Anandasangaree, has condemned recent Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel, Anandasangaree's senior legal staffer has been sharing social media posts defending the "revolutionary violence" and cheering "Go Palestine".

October 8, 2023 - "A senior advisor to a Liberal cabinet minister shared an Instagram post condoning Palestinian 'revolutionary violence' and using a hashtag calling for the destruction of Israel. Brandon Montour, who is listed as a senior legal affairs advisor to Liberal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Gary Anandasangaree on the federal government’s employee directory, also shared a post supporting Palestinian liberation through 'whatever means necessary.' The sharing of the posts came amid unprecedented Hamas attacks on Israel that have so far killed more than 600 Israeli soldiers and civilians and kidnapped 100 hostages, including children and seniors – with one senior Israeli official calling it 'our 9/11.'

"Terrorists fired thousands of rockets and dozens of Palestinian gunmen infiltrated Israeli territory on Saturday.  The same day, Montour shared an Instagram post saying 'revolutionary violence is not terrorism. It’s a fight for liberation.' The post was shared from a 'Marxist-Leninist, Proletarian feminist' account. The post contained three other images, including one of Hamas terrorists capturing Israeli soldiers and one that read 'resistance doesn’t happen only by violence, but violence is the mainstream.' The post had the caption 'Go Palestine' and the hashtags #destroyisrael, #destroyimperialism, #destroycolonialism, #freepalestine and #revolution.

"Montour also shared a post from a Palestinian liberation group that called for people to 'support Palestinian Resistance from Al-Quds [Jerusalem] to Gaza.' Behind the text is an image of rockets being launched. 'Supporting Palestinian liberation is supporting whatever means necessary it takes to get there,' the post said. 'Freedom has only ever been achieved through resistance. After over 75 years of ongoing ethnic cleansing and genocide, how could anyone expect anything else from Palestinians but resistance?'...

"Montour did not respond to several requests for comment by True North. However, shortly after True North reached out to him, his LinkedIn page was deleted.

"The views expressed in the posts shared by Montour are contrary to the position taken by Canada’s Liberal government, which has denounced Hamas’ attacks on Israel as terrorism. Anandasangaree, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, issued statements condemning Hamas and showing solidarity with Israel following the attacks....

Why are the Coutts 4 still in jail?

Why are the Coutts 4 still in jail, with no bail and no trial date, more than 18 months after their arrest? A former Freedom Convoy participant suspects the worst.

July 13, 2023 - "It's been 18 months since Canada's Freedom Convoy rocked the world, when truckers from all corners of Canada descended on Ottawa to protest Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's vindictive and punishing vaccine mandates. The ... shockwaves were felt throughout the world—both from the power of the protest and the vicious response to it by Trudeau. While the Convoy was still hundreds of kilometers from Ottawa, Trudeau's Public Safety Minister, Marco Mendocino, was planning a media campaign deploying 'a similar message to the one used in response to the Jan. 6 attacks in Washington, D.C.' which would emphasize the 'more extreme elements' of the protestors. Trudeau memed himself into believing that a January 6 type insurrection was about to storm Parliament Hill, and promptly vacated the city to hide at a chalet in rural Quebec, where he remained for several days.... 

"Trudeau invoked The Emergencies Act, which allows the Canadian government to suspend civil liberties in the face of a so-called state of emergency. The invocation brought an end to the protests and launched a Kafkaesque nightmare for many who were involved. Bank accounts were seized and funds confiscated. Tamara Lich was arrested, and still faces charges of 'counseling mischief' for her role organizing the protest. And four others — Chris Lysak, Chris Carbert, Anthony (Tony) Olienick, and Jerry Morin — have been held without a trial and without bail for charges related to 'conspiracy to commit murder' against Canadian police officers at the Coutts, Alberta border crossing.

"These are serious charges, which should imply serious evidence presented at an expeditious trial; yet at time of writing, it has been 515 days since these men were arrested, and no trial has yet taken place. Worse, the evidence on offer is vague and ambiguous: text messages, testimony from two undercover RCMP officers working the crowd at the Coutts protest site, and a widely circulated photo of allegedly confiscated weapons that provided the main justification for the invocation of The Emergencies Act.

"Whatever the charges against them, the denial of bail is an egregious departure from the norm, and has been given no explanation. As Donald Best, a former detective and 15 year veteran of the Toronto Police Services, pointed out, everybody gets bail in Canada, including a suspect accused of the first degree murder of a Toronto Police Officer.... Yet there's no bail set for the Coutts Four, whose ... actual trial date will be set for some time in 2024. These are political prisoners, pure and simple. They are being denied basic rights due to even the most violent of criminals because they are on the wrong side of the Trudeau government. They are being used as a fig leaf, the last shred of Trudeau's legitimacy for invoking The Emergencies Act and for the massive overreach of freezing bank accounts and seizing assets that it incurred.

"It seems that Trudeau is determined not only to smear the Convoy as a Jan. 6 Canadian redo, but to treat the Coutts Four in a similar way, depriving them of their civil rights as the United States did to many protesters arrested in the days and weeks following that fateful day in D.C. Hundreds spent over a year in Guantanamo Bay-like conditions in D.C. prisons, denied bail and treated worse than convicted rapists and serial killers.... But few in Canada are willing to expose our version of these abuses.

"Margaret 'Granny' Mackay of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta is one of them. Mackay is the creator and administrator of the Alberta Political Prisoners Facebook page and is in regular contact with the accused and their legal team. Mackay has highlighted the subpar treatment the men have received in remand, including being held in segregation, a polite term for the torture known as solitary confinement; having necessary medical treatment delayed; being denied supplements for treating specific health issues; and being granted extremely limited visitation time from family.

"Did they commit crimes worthy of such treatment? We just don't know. As Mackay has maintained through all of this, 'I'm after the truth. The truth is locked in a remand center right now, and it's not being allowed out'....  Jason Lavigne, an independent journalist in western Alberta, put it [that] "There is an inverted house of cards Trudeau, Mendocino, Rouleau, all of these people have built, and at the bottom are the Coutts 4.' If these men are exonerated, Canadians will start demanding answers about a whole lot of other things....

"The Coutts Four are the last of Trudeau's political enemies whom he can punish with impunity; they have no power and the full weight of the state against them. If his government can allow murderers and terrorists out on bail, they should extend the same to the men from Coutts and get on with the trial.... We don't yet know if these men are innocent or guilty of the charges against them, but it flies in the face of justice that they have not yet faced trial and have been denied bail."

Ottawa police taze "Save the Children" protester

Ottawa police were armed with tazers to control protesters at Thursday's "Save the Children convoy" event on Parliament Hill.

October 5, 2023 -  "Another convoy protest to Parliament Hill and another strong use-of-force response by Ottawa Police. This time it was a 'Save the Children' event in protest of gender ideology in schools. This time there were no trucks, honking horns, police horses or Emergencies Act declaration. But there was what witnesses described as a 'Taser' — technically referred to as a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) — not used to subdue just one person under arrest, but also pointed at the crowd ... late in the afternoon on Oct. 4, 2023....

"This was a man described as a 54-year-old man, in shorts and a T-shirt, among a couple of dozen protesters. He was arrested and taken to the ground being struck with the CEW wire and then, while face down on the road, the device was put to his back, and you can hear the electrical charge coming from the hand-held device that has the appearance of a gun. Soon after, the officer lifted the CEW, trained on those nearby, and pointed it at horrified witnesses – one of whom was the man’s wife. 

"'Back up, back up,' you can hear the angered officer saying as he pointed the use-of-force option from one person to another. It had a frantic, surreal and out-of-control situation feel to it just below the Prime Minister’s Office on Wellington Street – 19-months removed from the Freedom Convoy protest on this same spot. 

"There is video showing the officer’s knee on the man’s side and back while administering the CEW as they were handcuffing him. A second officer at one point put his hands on his neck. 'He can’t breathe!' you can hear the man’s wife screaming. 'He had a heart attack twice. Don’t do that.' 

"Social media posts later indicated he was back home and, despite showing marks the CEW allegedly left on his skin, he did not seem to be severely hurt — even though while on the escort to the car the officer and man slipped and fell on what appeared to be wet pavement. Another officer was seen to take out his CEW device while encouraging people to retreat. A second person, who does not appear to have been involved in the slipping incident, is seen to have been handcuffed.... 

"It is not clear from the video what precipitated the original arrest, or the others which earlier included an older female. But ... no one was held in custody. On X (formerly Twitter), Ottawa Police posted they 'were on scene in the area of Parliament Hill to ensure public safety was maintained during a demonstration' and 'some protesters were using large speakers and loud hailers in contravention of bylaws.' Ottawa Police said that 'after various interactions with police, three people were arrested for obstruction and later released on conditions'.... 

"Ottawa Police have yet to comment further. It is important to hear their perspective. There is nothing easy about being a police officer in general and especially in a situation like that. It’s also appropriate for police to review responses to ensure something can be learned. The best strategy is always de-escalation, and the best outcome is no one harmed.... 

"In Ottawa during the [Freedom Convoy], Rebel News reporter Alexa Lavoie was struck with a cannister from a crowd-controlling tear–gas gun and 4-foot-10, 78-year-old great-grandfather and retired school custodian Gerry Charlebois was physically arrested following an incident where an officer felt he had violated Ottawa’s no-honking bylaw. Now 80, Charlebois, who had his charges recently withdrawn by the Crown, was not protesting but offering support for a trucker. 

"But protesting is a Charter right. Demonstrators are taxpayers and human beings just as vital to the country as elected officials or authority figures. With Canadians finding themselves shot, taken down violently or hit with an electrical charge, sometimes government needs to be reminded of that."

CRTC kicks open door to podcasting regulation

The CRTC said it would leave podcasts alone. Turns out that was a myth: Peter Menzies in the Hub | McDonald-Laurier Institute | Peter Menzies:

October 4, 2023 - "The CRTC [Canadian Radio-Television Commission] has backtracked on its promise to leave podcasts alone. On May 12, the federal regulator stated in its 'Myths and Facts' release that concerns it would regulate content such as podcasts were a 'myth' and the 'fact' of the matter was that 'a person who creates audio or video content or creates a podcast, is not a broadcaster under' the Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11). That 'fact' didn’t live long. It expired September 29 when, in its first decisions since being granted authority over the internet, the CRTC changed lanes.

"While it was careful to state that podcasters themselves don’t have to register with the Commission, the web-based platforms that make podcasts available must do so. Indeed, podcasters may not be broadcasters, but very much as predicted by the legislation’s critics, the CRTC has found ways to bring them into scope anyway. It decided that podcasts constitute 'programs under the Broadcasting Act, given that they are comprised of sounds intended to inform, enlighten or entertain.'

"The regulator’s decision further explains that while podcasters may not be broadcasters, the transmission of podcasts over the internet most definitely 'constitutes broadcasting' which makes those entities that platform podcasts into cable companies. So while the CRTC concedes that while 'the Broadcasting Act does not give the Commission a mandate to regulate creators of programs' it nevertheless makes clear that its powers do cover 'those services that are involved in the broadcasting of programs, which are referred to as broadcasting undertakings'....?

"The legal contortions continue throughout the decision, but the clear takeaway, the bottom line, is that, while it keeps insisting it doesn’t intend to regulate the content of podcasts, it is very concerned about the content of podcasts and if it can’t legally regulate them, it’ll make sure someone else does it for them. Paragraph 223 of its decision makes it clear the CRTC is about to draw podcasts into its warm embrace.

Without information about online undertakings that transmit or retransmit podcasts, it would be more difficult for the Commission to ensure the achievement of the objectives of … the Broadcasting Act, which relate to, among other things, providing a reasonable opportunity for the public to be exposed to the expression of differing views on matters of public concern, and (that) the programming provided by the Canadian broadcasting system should be varied and comprehensive, providing a balance of information, enlightenment and entertainment for people of all ages, interests and tastes.

"In other words, what the CRTC denounced as 'myth' in the spring has become a 'fact' in the fall. It has kicked open the door to the regulation of online content, if not directly then by proxy through the platforms that deliver the work of podcasters to their audiences....

"Here’s what will follow. The list of intervenors presenting at the CRTC’s public hearing coming up in late November indicates the panel of commissioners will hear from a number of groups that will explain the extent to which they are under-represented and funded. So, a possible outcome of this will be that services that carry podcasts will have to fund podcasters who, on their own, haven’t been able to find an audience. Just as likely is that platforms will be regulated to ensure podcasts designated by the CRTC are given priority visibility/discoverability online over undesignated podcasts through the manipulation of algorithms. These are likely to be podcasts by Indigenous, BIPOC and LGBTQ2S creators....

"The CRTC has now confirmed what it denied mere months ago when it was parroting then-Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez’s talking points. It will make sure podcasts and any other internet content it can capture is regulated."

"After Justin Trudeau’s remark in Canada's House of Commons, the country's foreign minister Melanie Joly announced the expulsion of a senior diplomat posted at India's High Commission there. The Canadian foreign ministry identified the diplomat as the 'head of India's foreign intelligence agency in Canada'. In a retaliatory move, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat posted in India.... 

"As diplomatic relations between the two nations soured, Canada on Tuesday issued an advisory for its nationals in India..... The advisory suggested citizens living in India to 'think about leaving the country if it is safe to do so'. Hours later, India on Wednesday issued an advisory for its nationals and students living in Canada. The advisory urged them to 'exercise utmost caution' in view of 'growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and violence in Canada'. The advisory cited threats to 'Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community who oppose the anti-India agenda' and advised Indian nations to avoid travelling to regions which have witnessed such incidents.

"A day after his initial remark sparked a diplomatic row, Justin Trudeau said that he was not looking to 'provoke' India or 'escalate' tensions. 'We want to work with the government of India' ... Justin Trudeau said. Meanwhile, it was reported that Canada wanted its Five Eye allies to come together and condemn India. The Five Eyes intelligence alliance comprises Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. However, the ally nations were not keen on taking sides in what has now turned into a diplomatic feud between India and Canada. The US, Australia, and the UK have said that the claims should be thoroughly probed."

India Threatens Canada Amid Spat Over Nijjar Killing; Wants 40 Diplomats Kicked Out | Hindustan Times | October 3, 2023:

September  21, 2023 - "Foreign affairs are a minefield for Justin Trudeau but surely no one expected him to trigger an explosive diplomatic war with India. This is now a defining moment for the prime minister.... If India sent a hit squad to Canada to kill a Canadian then Trudeau must marshal all resources — political, diplomatic, and economic — to punish such a grave breach of national sovereignty. India should be subject to the full weight of Canadian and international sanctions so it understands the world will not tolerate such gross criminal behaviour. 

"But for that to happen the prime minister must put forward a convincing case to Canadians and the world that clearly demonstrates India’s guilt. It is not enough to say security agencies are 'actively pursuing credible allegations' that Indian government agents killed Hardeep Singh Nijjar.... If the Canadian Security Intelligence Service or the RCMP has credible evidence then they should come forward. Because the stakes are very high. Not only is the allegation a very serious one, but the ramifications will be significant.... 

"Despite the sensational nature of the charge, the Canadian government appears to be going to great lengths to stress it is only an accusation. In a press conference Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly was at pains to talk about 'the allegations' and that India 'may have been involved' and how 'if proved true' the killing would be troublesome. It was as if Joly was not convinced herself. 

"And in light of the allegation, the prime minister’s trip to India recently can be viewed ... as totally inexplicable. If Trudeau had always planned during the trip to confront Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and lodge a protest about the killing, why did he take his son along instead of a coterie of high-profile ministers to underscore the seriousness of the matter? And if Trudeau skulking in his hotel room instead of attending Modi’s official dinner was intended as some form of statesman-like demonstration over the murder it was a spectacular failure. 

"It has been three months since the murder of Nijjar and the Liberal government is only now talking of 'credible allegations.' It would have been better to keep concerns under wraps until such time as facts were available to support such an explosive accusation. Just because the Globe and Mail published a story about how India’s involvement was being investigated in the killing, doesn’t mean the Liberals had to respond, especially if they were not going to present a more persuasive case."

California law regulating doctors' speech repealed

A California law which empowered the state medical board to take away the licenses of doctors who challenged 'contemporary scientific consensus' on Covid-19, passed with much fanfare a year ago, was quietly repealed on the weekend.  

California repeals COVID misinformation law, bowing to legal pressure | Washington Times | Sean Salai:

October 2, 2023 - "California has repealed a misinformation law that restricted the advice doctors could give patients about COVID-19, bowing to mounting legal pressure. The legislation was signed into law in September 2022 and took effect in January. It tried to define COVID disinformation as 'unprofessional conduct' and empower the Medical Board of California to revoke the licenses of physicians who diverged from 'contemporary scientific consensus.' A federal judge halted the law in January pending court challenges.... 

"California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed a state Senate bill repealing the section of the state’s Business and Professions Code containing the law, according to a Saturday post on the governor’s website that offered no comment on the action. The nullification should take effect in January, one year after the law took effect.

"Attorneys from the Liberty Justice Center, a Chicago nonprofit legal firm that argued against the legislation in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on July 17, announced its repeal Monday. 'We’re glad California repealed this bill before it could spread to other states, and we’re proud to have defended our clients’ First Amendment rights,' said Jacob Huebert, president of the Liberty Justice Center....

"In a signing statement appended to the law on Sept. 30, 2022, Mr. Newsom acknowledged it could have a 'chilling effect' on free speech. But he said lawmakers had carefully drafted it to deal with abuses and entrusted its interpretation to the Medical Board of California.... Several California physicians disagreed and challenged the board’s right to define treatment. They filed three separate lawsuits against state officials to overturn the legislation in October, November and December 2022. 

"Drs. Tracy Hoeg, Ram Duriseti, Aaron Kheriaty, Pete Mazolewski and Azadeh Khatibi argued in a November 2022 suit that the law interfered with their ability to give patients timely advice as new COVID variants emerged. The New Civil Liberties Alliance, a public interest law firm, represented them in the Eastern District of California. U.S. District Senior Judge William B. Shubb, a President George H.W. Bush appointee, granted them a preliminary injunction against the law in a Jan. 25 ruling....

"Liberty Justice Center filed the first suit against the legislation on Oct. 4, 2022 — a few days after Ms. Newsom signed it into law — in California’s Central District. Drs. Mark McDonald, a Los Angeles psychiatrist, and Jeff Barke, an Orange County primary care physician, argued in that complaint that the law violated their constitutional right to free speech and the spirit of scientific inquiry. 

"In statements on Monday, the two doctors expressed mixed feelings about their legal victory. 'What a shame that it required the precious resources of time, money and stress to preserve our constitutional rights of free speech and medical freedom,' Dr. Barke said. 'We need real accountability, or this will happen again,' added Dr. McDonald.

The lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages per plaintiff, was filed in Court of King’s Bench Wednesday by Catherine Christensen with Valour Law in St. Albert. The allegations must be proven in court.

"This follows a $500 million lawsuit Christensen launched in June involving 330 CAF members who suffered vaccine injuries and/or were forced out [see video - gd].

"According to the recent statement of claim members who 'served honourably' but objected to taking an experimental drug were harassed, isolated, punished; and faced threats of jail, being blacklisted to never work again, or having pensions forfeited. They were mocked by peers, bullied by superiors. Many suffer injuries from the vaccines declared mandatory in October 2021.... The lawsuit details egregious violations to established law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms....

"The lawsuit is filed against Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre, Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff Lt.-Gen. Frances Allen, Lt.-Gen. Jocelyn Paul, Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, Lt.-Gen. Eric Kenny, former defence minister Anita Anand, former deputy defence minister Jody Thomas, Surgeon General Maj.-Gen. JGM Bilodeau, Chaplain General Brigadier-Gen. JLG Belisle, Judge Advocate General Rear-Admiral Genevieve Bernatchez, and His Majesty the King in Right of Canada.

"Careers of some who received medals and commendations were destroyed.... Some claim they were pushed to the edge of desperation. Some struggle with suicidal thoughts.... Some succumbed to suicidal urges. Then there’s the humiliation.... Adverse effects, punishments — battles fought alone they should never have had to fight....

"The lawsuit’s statement of facts claims the CAF 'operates with a focus on political agendas and taking direction from political leaders that is detrimental to operational readiness and effectiveness.' 'In this case, the CAF shirked its own purpose and rushed an untested product onto its members, mislabeled this experimental gene therapy a "vaccine" knowingly made false statements of safety and efficacy, and facilitated its mandate with no option to refuse except for mandatory permanent removal from service.'

"It alleges Eyre 'claimed unlimited powers without legislative approval, and even claimed these powers prevent and preclude judicial review.' Some commanding officers were “relentless and brutal in carrying out the measures” that in some cases “were criminal in nature.” That includes forcing members to spend extended periods of time in extreme weather conditions with no shelter and forcibly confining them to cramped spaces 'with no respite for meals or personal hygiene needs.'

"It notes 'not one' CAF member died from COVID-19 'yet there are members with seriously life changing vaccine injuries and deaths from the administration of the biologics.'"
