October 14, 2012 - "The fear of Mr. Johnson’s tipping the outcome in an important state may explain why an aide to Mr. Romney ran what was effectively a surveillance operation into Mr. Johnson’s efforts over the summer to qualify for the ballot at the Iowa State Fair, providing witnesses to testify in a lawsuit to block him that ultimately fizzled.

Libertarians suspect it is why Republican state officials in Michigan blocked Mr. Johnson from the ballot after he filed proper paperwork three minutes after his filing deadline.

And it is why Republicans in Pennsylvania hired a private detective to investigate his ballot drive in Philadelphia, appearing at the homes of paid canvassers and, in some cases, flashing an F.B.I. badge — he was a retired agent — while asking to review the petitions they gathered at $1 a signature, according to testimony in the case and interviews."

October 13, 2012 - "With little more than three weeks to go until Election Day, Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson has amped up his rhetoric on Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, stressing his differences between the two — particularly in regards to what Johnson says is excessive US military force and defense spending.

“'I’m the only candidate who doesn’t want to bomb Iran,' Johnson said earlier this week (Oct. 10) when the former two-term governor of New Mexico addressed an enthusiastic group of supporters at his alma mater, the University of New Mexico.

"Speaking without notes for just under a half-hour, Johnson blasted Obama from the left and Romney from the right but saved his most passionate rhetoric for cutting the defense budget by 43 percent and calling for an end to US foreign interventions.

"'[If] we bomb Iran, we’re going to find ourselves with another hundred million enemies to this country that we wouldn’t otherwise have,' Johnson said."

October 12 - "Ron Paul, the maverick Texas congressman who has twice run for the Republican presidential nomination, won't endorse the nominee of his party.... Paul ... made it definitive in an interview October 12 on the CNBC program Futures Now.

"'No,' he said, plainly and unequivocally, when asked about an endorsement. Neither the GOP challenger nor President Obama will change the course of fiscal and monetary policy that is leading to what has been called the 'fiscal cliff,' Paul said, because both are captive of special interests. And neither will act to stop the Federal Reserve from papering over the growing chasm of debt by inflating the money supply in a policy called 'quantitative easing.'

"'Both [are] within the establishment where they need the Federal Reserve as lender of last resort to make sure that you can take all the risk in the world,' Paul said, describing the 'Fed' as an essential prop of what is essentially a 'one-party system' in which both Republicans and Democrats refuse to cut federal spending.

"'I've been in this business a long time,' said the 12-term congressman, 'and believe me, there is essentially no difference from one administration to another, no matter what the platforms [say]. The foreign policy stays the same, the monetary policy stays the same, there's no proposal for any real cuts and both parties support it.'"

[In] at least one state, Nevada, Johnson is pulling voters from the Obama camp.  Other news sources, such as CNN’s PoliticalTicker are saying that he hurts the GOP more than the Democrats, overall."

"[Politico] adds this discrepancy in influence could come from geographic location: 'It’s plausible that Johnson could lower support for Obama — especially out west. For example, Johnson — the only pro-pot candidate on the ballot — is running along side as a marijuana legalization initiative in libertarian-leaning Colorado — a state that is definitely in play.' The Tucson Citizen echos this concern, citing Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico as states that could see effects at the polls.

Oct. 10, 2012 - "A state judge Wednesday ruled that Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson will remain on the Pennsylvania ballot for November’s general election.

"Commonwealth Court Judge James Gardner Colins determined that Johnson had collected 20,730 valid signatures, just above the threshold of 20,601 signature required by state law for third parties to get on the ballot.

"Along with Johnson, the Libertarians will [have] their candidates on the ballot for U.S. Senate, state auditor general, state attorney general and state treasurer.

"Tom Stevens, chairman of the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party, said the ruling was a victory in an uphill battle against the Republican Party of Pennsylvania.... 'Now the voters of Pennsylvania will have an opportunity to have a real choice in who to vote for in statewide and national elections this November,' he told PA Independent."
