Rand Paul among group vowing to block non-debt, deficit legislation - James R. Carroll, Louisville Courier-Journal, Mar. 10, 2011:
"Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and seven other Republican senators vowed Thursday to block all legislation before the Senate that doesn't reduce federal spending or the size of government.
"The move appears to challenge a 'gentlemen's agreement' struck in January between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., that would avoid delaying tactics like the filibuster that bogged down the Senate last session.
“'The Senate Democrats have failed to address the current debt crisis,' Paul said in a statement. 'With less than a week before the temporary spending bill expires, they intend to bring up other pieces of legislation instead of providing ample time for debate and amendments on the (next temporary spending) bill.'
“'Unless they directly address the current crisis, we have notified Senate Democrat leadership that we will object to the consideration of any legislation brought before the Senate,' the statement said."
