Oct. 18, 2011 - "The 1996 race was all about three men. Senator Bob Dole was an establishment candidate with a strong record of public office but an image problem.... Steve Forbes was a businessman who had never served in an elected position.... Pat Buchanan was a maverick running on a quirky collection of unfashionable ideas....
"Romney is this year’s dullard centrist and Cain is the tax-obsessed businessman nipping at his heels. Ron Paul is the crazy guy with a mix of apparently contradictory positions that look totally unelectable....
"The genius of Buchanan’s 1996 campaign was that it targeted its few resources on motivating a small but loyal band of voters. He never diluted his message or tamed his style (once, when asked whether or not he supported gun control, he replied, “I think it’s important to have a steady aim”). While Dole and Forbes dragged each other down, upping their negative ratings with devastating attack ads, Buchanan quietly worked on getting his people out to vote."
