Santorum, Paul camps team up to get more delegates

Santorum, Paul camps team up to get more delegates | Seattle Times Newspaper - Associated Press:

March 31, 2012 - "The Rick Santorum and Ron Paul camps are teaming up to deny Romney delegates at the state convention, seemingly channeling those delegates to Santorum's turf, The Seattle Times reported Saturday

"Santorum state volunteer coordinator Graden Neal said the former senator from Pennsylvania directed the alliance.... Neal said the presidential candidate joined a conference call with Washington state campaign leaders on Wednesday.

"'And the Senator didn't mince words,' Neal wrote. 'In order for us to win the nomination in Tampa in August, we must deny Romney delegates to that convention. If ... Romney receives 1,144 delegates before the national convention, it is all over for our campaign. That is the reason why the Senator himself directed us to coalition with the Ron Paul delegates to deny Romney any state delegates'....

"A spokeswoman for the Paul campaign ... said in an email they are 'fully aboard' with the effort."

"The website www.colbertnation.com lists Johnson as the Monday guest and links to his website, www.GaryJohnson2012.com, which also confirms the guest appearance.

"The Colbert website does not refer to Johnson as the former governor of the Land of Enchantment, rather using this blurb: 'The governor of New Mexico talks about running for president.'

"Johnson has been a guest of host Stephen Colbert on the political satire show multiple times in the past several years, often [discussing] his stance on the legalization of marijuana."

Ontario Court of Appeal legalizes brothels

Prostitution legalized: Ontario Court of Appeal greenlights brothels | News | National Post:

March 26, 2012 - "The Court of Appeal for Ontario has swept aside some of the country’s anti-prostitution laws saying they place unconstitutional restrictions on prostitutes’ ability to protect themselves.

"The landmark decision means sex workers will be able to hire drivers, bodyguards and support staff and work indoors in organized brothels or 'bawdy houses,' while 'exploitation' by pimps remains illegal.

"However, openly soliciting customers on the street remains prohibited with the judges deeming that 'a reasonable limit on the right to freedom of expression.'

"The province’s highest court suspended the immediate implementation of striking the bawdy house law for a year to allow the government an opportunity to amend the Criminal Code."

Ron Paul More Electable Than Mitt Romney in Latest Poll

PRESS RELEASE

“Paul is the strongest candidate with independents, tying Obama with them while the rest of the GOP field trails by 6-15 points.”

LAKE JACKSON, Texas, Mar 22, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul polls better against President Barack Obama in a head-to-head matchup than establishment-choice moderate Mitt Romney, according to a recent survey conducted by Public Policy Polling.

The poll found that Obama defeats Romney by 4 percentage points (48-44) and Newt Gingrich by 8 percent (50-42). While Santorum also joins Paul being within striking distance of the President by 3 points (48-45 and 46-43 respectively), Paul brings Obama a noticeable 2 percentage points further away from the 50 percent a candidate seeks to win on election day. Considering the +/- 3.3-percentage point margin of error, Paul in this poll is statistically tied for the presidency.

Reinforcing the electability case for Paul is that he ties Obama among independent voters, while Romney loses the largest voting segment by 6 percent, Santorum by 8 percent, and Gingrich by 15 percent -- a cause for concern whether Paul’s three rivals would even be competitive come November.

While many polls have shown Paul to be the most competitive Romney alternative, it also shows Paul to be making substantial progress and momentum for a general election bid. The new poll reveals that Paul is narrowing the gap between himself and Obama by 5 percentage points since last month’s PPP poll.

Other notables are that among one of the fastest growing voter segments, the Hispanic vote, Paul takes a full third of the Hispanic vote against the sitting President, with no other candidate able to come within 5 points of Paul’s Hispanic support.

Among the largest voter segment, self-identified independents, Paul is viewed favorably by 41 percent, whereas Romney and Santorum are relegated to a melancholy 29 percent and Gingrich further behind with a mere 24 percent favorability. These favorability numbers among independents translate into a clear Election Day advantage unique to Paul, where he would tie President Obama 42 to 42 for their votes.

Young voters, those 18 to 29 years in this poll, have long been considered to be in the President’s court. Yet, in a Paul-Obama matchup, these voters leave Obama and comparatively flock to Paul, backing him with a hefty 40 percent of their support. The range of youth support for Paul’s three competitors in a head-to-head with Obama ranges 22 to 29 percent, meaning about half of Paul’s margin to weak at best.

“The media may find an inevitability about Romney becoming nominee, but it is clear that with anyone other than Ron Paul as nominee a second term for Obama is the inevitability,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“When polls say ‘Romney is actually not the most electable Republican candidate,’ voters should flock to the candidate who can defeat Obama by winning on true conservative principle. That man is Ron Paul,” added Mr. Benton.

The PPP poll is based on telephone surveys of 900 voters and has a +/- 3.3-percentage point error margin.

Ron Paul gets a boost at Jackson County GOP caucus - KansasCity.com - Dave Hellig, Kansas City Star:

Mar. 24, 2012 - "Supporters of Republican presidential candidates Ron Paul and Mitt Romney combined forces to pitch a shutout at Rick Santorum in Saturday’s Jackson County GOP caucus....  1,000 caucus goers awarded Paul a majority of the county’s delegates to Republican congressional district conventions in April and the state convention in June. Romney got the rest.

"'We were totally railroaded,' said Mary Jane VanBuskirk, a Santorum caucus voter. 'And it’s not fair.'

"Caucus goers in both the Paul and Romney camps said they began to discuss an alliance last week, after the Clay County caucus Mar. 17. In that meeting, Romney and Santorum backers joined together to reject a slate proposed by the Paul campaign, leaving the Texas congressman without delegates....

"The final slate awarded 63 delegates to Paul and 81 to Romney for the 5th Congressional District convention in April. For the 6th District, Paul won all 35 available delegates....

"Twenty-five national delegates will be picked at the Missouri GOP convention in June. There, Paul will have 140 Jackson County delegates, while Romney will have the other 39, caucus officials said."
