CCP election interference likely, says SITE

Canadian security officials expect Chinese government interference in Canada's election campaign.

Officials Say Beijing Interference ‘Highly Likely’ in Federal Election | Epoch Times | Noé Chartier:

March 26, 2025 - "Federal security officials say they expect Beijing will attempt to meddle in the ongoing electoral campaign. The chair of the elections security task force provided the body’s assessment on the different threats facing the election during a press conference in Ottawa on March 24. 'It is expected that the People’s Republic of China, or PRC, will likely continue to target Canadian democratic institutions and civil society to advance its strategic objectives,' said Vanessa Lloyd, who heads the Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) Task Force.

"SITE is composed of representatives of four different departments and agencies with a security mandate. Lloyd’s permanent post is deputy director of operations, or second-in-command, with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). SITE also includes representatives of the RCMP, Global Affairs Canada, and the Communications Security Establishment.

"Chinese officials and their proxies are 'likely to conduct foreign interference activity using a complex array of both overt and covert mechanisms,' Lloyd added without elaborating.

"Some of these mechanisms have come to light in recent years through intelligence leaks in the media and via documents released through the Foreign Interference Commission presided by Justice Marie-Josée Hogue. They have involved mobilizing community groups to shun certain election candidates or implicating some candidates and staffers in interference networks. The PRC has been identified as the foremost foreign interference threat by the Hogue report released in January.... Lloyd added that China is highly likely to use social media to promote its narratives and 'specifically target Chinese ethnic, cultural, and religious communities in Canada using clandestine and deceptive means'....

"Global Affairs Canada’s Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), which monitors the digital information environment for foreign state-sponsored disinformation, said in February that it detected an information operation targeting then-leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland. The RRM said 'disparaging' news articles about Freeland, originating from an anonymous blog linked to the PRC, were being spread on the widely popular Chinese-language social platform WeChat. The RRM said the campaign was seen by approximately 2 million to 3 million WeChat users globally. WeChat was also used in the 2021 election to spread misinformation about the Conservative Party....

"Along with concerns around China, Lloyd said the Indian government has the 'intent and capability' to interfere in elections to 'assert its geopolitical influence.' Relations between Ottawa and New Delhi have remained strained since 2023 when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of being involved in the murder of a pro-Khalistan activist in British Columbia.... India has denied involvement and has accused Ottawa of making politically motivated allegations.

"Lloyd also said Russia could use online networks to interfere and added that Pakistan could also meddle to seek to counter India’s influence. Government intelligence summaries released to the Hogue Inquiry say that Pakistan has previously conducted foreign interference against Canada. Meanwhile, the summaries say authorities have not detected 'significant foreign interference' in past federal elections from Russia, although it possesses the capabilities."

Conservatives, Jordan Peterson on Trudeau's foreign interference list

During sworn testimony to Canada's foreign interference inquiry last week, Prime Minister Trudeau dropped a couple of bombshells:
(1) unnamed Conservative MPs or Senators are inovlved in foreign interference for unnamed countries;
(2) Toronto psychologist and internet personality Jordan Peterson is being funded by Russian state broadcaster Russia Today.

Trudeau tells inquiry some Conservative parliamentarians are involved in foreign interference | CBC News | Elizabeth Thompson:

October 16, 2024 - "In astonishing testimony before the foreign interference inquiry Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he has the names of Conservative parliamentarians who are involved in foreign interference. Trudeau told the inquiry that he instructed the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) to warn Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in order to protect the party's integrity.

"'I have the names of a number of parliamentarians, former parliamentarians and/or candidates in the Conservative Party of Canada who are engaged, or at high risk of, or for whom there is clear intelligence around foreign interference,' he said. 'And I have directed CSIS and others to try and inform the Conservative Party leader to be warned and armed, to be able to make decisions that protect the integrity of that party, of its members, from activities around foreign interference.' The term 'parliamentarian' can refer to senators or members of the House of Commons.

"Later, under questioning by Nando De Luca, lawyer for the Conservative Party, Trudeau said the names of Liberal parliamentarians and individuals from other parties are also on the list of parliamentarians."

Poilievre CALLS OUT TRUDEAU's blatant lies about foreign interference | Stand on Guard | Krayden's Right with David Krayden | October 17, 2024:

What did Justin Trudeau say about Tucker Carlson and Jordan Peterson during election interference testimony? | indy100 | Liam O'Dell:

October 18, 2024 - "As Canada’s Foreign Interference Commission continues its inquiry into other countries’ involvement in its democratic processes, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave evidence under oath on Wednesday (16 October) which saw him name right-wing commentators Jordan Peterson and Tucker Carlson as media figures funded by Russian state media.

"Set up in September 2023, the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions has already published an initial report in which it named China as a 'main perpetrator of foreign interference' against Canada. The May report also pointed to Russia, India, Pakistan and Iran as 'possible foreign interference actors' but said of Russia that it is 'likely not currently a significant foreign interference threat' to Canada’s federal elections.... The inquiry has now turned its attention to the capacity of federal bodies to 'detect, deter and counter' foreign interference, which explains PM Trudeau being asked to give evidence.

"During his cross-examination by lawyer Guillaume Sirois ... Trudeau was shown multiple headlines from Russia Today – a broadcaster funded by the Russian state – relating to the ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests of 2022 concerning Covid vaccine requirements placed on Canadian long-haul truck drivers.

"Following this, Trudeau commented: 'We have seen that anti-vaxx messages during the convoy and pandemic were amplified by Russian propaganda, especially in the media of the right.... As I’ve said, we’ve recently seen that RT is currently funding bloggers and other personalities of the right such as Jordan Peterson - other names that are well-known are Tucker Carlson, as well - in order to amplify messages that are destabilising democracies.'”

Interference alleged in CPC leadership races

Canada's National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians alleges that foreign actors working for the Chinese and Indian governments interfered in Conservative Party of Canada leadership races.

China, India allegedly interfered in Conservative leadership races: report | CBC News | Peter Zimonjic:

June 3, 2024 - "Foreign actors from India and the People's Republic of China allegedly interfered in more than one race for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, says an intelligence report tabled in the House of Commons on Monday. The report from the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP), a key Canadian intelligence oversight body, says there were 'two specific instances where [People's Republic of China] officials allegedly interfered in the leadership races of the Conservative Party of Canada.'

"Most of the details regarding the allegations in the NSICOP report have been redacted. The report does not provide any further information about the nature of Beijing's alleged interference, or about which Conservative leadership races allegedly were targeted and when.

"The report also reported an allegation that India interfered in a single Conservative Party leadership race....

"'CSIS did not advise the Conservative Party of Canada of any intelligence suggesting there was foreign interference in the leadership contest,' said Sarah Fischer, director of communications for the Conservative Party.... Fischer said Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's campaign received no notice of interference in his race and 'has no awareness of what is referenced.'

"In March 2023, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked the NSICOP committee, which is made up of MPs and senators from across the political spectrum, to investigate allegations of Chinese interference in Canada's elections. He made the request after media reports, citing unnamed security sources and classified documents,  accused China of interfering in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. Some of those reports also suggested that members of the Liberal government were aware of certain attempts at interference but didn't act.

"Monday's report marks the third time NSICOP has reviewed the government's response to threats of foreign interference since 2018 and Trudeau's trip to India — a point members make known throughout their latest report.

"'Given the risks posed by foreign interference to Canada's national security, the committee expected the government to act. It was slow to do so,' says the report. 'In the committee's view, this delay contributed in part to the crisis in which the government found itself in late 2022 and early 2023.'"

Trudeau sets off diplomatic war with India

Canada's shock allegation, India's firm denial and diplomatic war: 10-point recap | India Today

September 20, 2023 - "Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a[n accused] Khalistani terrorist, was shot dead in Canada’s Surrey in June. Three months after the incident, ... [on] Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the country's parliament that security agencies are probing 'credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India' to Nijjar’s killing on Canadian soil. Trudeau added that he had raised the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi earlier this month. India strongly denied Trudeau's claims....

"After Justin Trudeau’s remark in Canada's House of Commons, the country's foreign minister Melanie Joly announced the expulsion of a senior diplomat posted at India's High Commission there. The Canadian foreign ministry identified the diplomat as the 'head of India's foreign intelligence agency in Canada'. In a retaliatory move, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat posted in India....

"As diplomatic relations between the two nations soured, Canada on Tuesday issued an advisory for its nationals in India..... The advisory suggested citizens living in India to 'think about leaving the country if it is safe to do so'. Hours later, India on Wednesday issued an advisory for its nationals and students living in Canada. The advisory urged them to 'exercise utmost caution' in view of 'growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and violence in Canada'. The advisory cited threats to 'Indian diplomats and sections of the Indian community who oppose the anti-India agenda' and advised Indian nations to avoid travelling to regions which have witnessed such incidents.

"A day after his initial remark sparked a diplomatic row, Justin Trudeau said that he was not looking to 'provoke' India or 'escalate' tensions. 'We want to work with the government of India' ... Justin Trudeau said. Meanwhile, it was reported that Canada wanted its Five Eye allies to come together and condemn India. The Five Eyes intelligence alliance comprises Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. However, the ally nations were not keen on taking sides in what has now turned into a diplomatic feud between India and Canada. The US, Australia, and the UK have said that the claims should be thoroughly probed."

India Threatens Canada Amid Spat Over Nijjar Killing; Wants 40 Diplomats Kicked Out | Hindustan Times | October 3, 2023:

Does Trudeau have what it takes to wage diplomatic war with India? | National Post | Michael Higgins:

September  21, 2023 - "Foreign affairs are a minefield for Justin Trudeau but surely no one expected him to trigger an explosive diplomatic war with India. This is now a defining moment for the prime minister.... If India sent a hit squad to Canada to kill a Canadian then Trudeau must marshal all resources — political, diplomatic, and economic — to punish such a grave breach of national sovereignty. India should be subject to the full weight of Canadian and international sanctions so it understands the world will not tolerate such gross criminal behaviour.

"But for that to happen the prime minister must put forward a convincing case to Canadians and the world that clearly demonstrates India’s guilt. It is not enough to say security agencies are 'actively pursuing credible allegations' that Indian government agents killed Hardeep Singh Nijjar.... If the Canadian Security Intelligence Service or the RCMP has credible evidence then they should come forward. Because the stakes are very high. Not only is the allegation a very serious one, but the ramifications will be significant....

"Despite the sensational nature of the charge, the Canadian government appears to be going to great lengths to stress it is only an accusation. In a press conference Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly was at pains to talk about 'the allegations' and that India 'may have been involved' and how 'if proved true' the killing would be troublesome. It was as if Joly was not convinced herself.

"And in light of the allegation, the prime minister’s trip to India recently can be viewed ... as totally inexplicable. If Trudeau had always planned during the trip to confront Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and lodge a protest about the killing, why did he take his son along instead of a coterie of high-profile ministers to underscore the seriousness of the matter? And if Trudeau skulking in his hotel room instead of attending Modi’s official dinner was intended as some form of statesman-like demonstration over the murder it was a spectacular failure.

"It has been three months since the murder of Nijjar and the Liberal government is only now talking of 'credible allegations.' It would have been better to keep concerns under wraps until such time as facts were available to support such an explosive accusation. Just because the Globe and Mail published a story about how India’s involvement was being investigated in the killing, doesn’t mean the Liberals had to respond, especially if they were not going to present a more persuasive case."

India's Supreme Court rules no one can be forced to be vaccinated

India's courts get it right on vaccine mandates — and Canada doesn't | National Post - Rupa Subramanya:

May 5, 2022 - "On May 2, in a landmark judgment, India’s Supreme Court, the highest court in the land, ruled that 'no one can be forced to be vaccinated' and that 'bodily integrity and personal autonomy' are protected under the law as a constitutional right. Citing emerging scientific opinion 'which appears to indicate that the risk of transmission of the virus from unvaccinated individuals is almost on par with that from vaccinated persons,' the judicial bench went on to argue that since infection rates are currently low, restrictions imposed on the unvaccinated, including those that curtail their freedom of movement and access to welfare and other services, are not 'proportionate,' and urged organizations that imposed these restrictions to review these measures and modify them as necessary.

"The court was responding to a plea filed by a former member of the country’s national advisory group on immunization, seeking disclosure on vaccine clinical trials and the posting of vaccination-adverse events data. The plea argued that Indian states’ legislation mandating vaccination for government employees and as a precondition for accessing welfare and other services, including travel in public transport, was a violation of basic individual rights and, therefore, unconstitutional. The federal government in India itself has not issued any vaccine mandates and has always maintained that it is a voluntary, individual choice....

"What is fascinating is that this extraordinary Supreme Court judgment in India is in the context of a Westminster system, a system originating in the United Kingdom but also, of course, shared by Canada....  While India’s Supreme Court has clearly circumscribed the extent to which the federal or state governments can impinge on individual rights in the interest of public health, it’s noteworthy that nothing comparable has occurred in Canada. This is striking, given the similarities between the two countries’ judicial systems.

"Why haven’t we seen greater pushback from the courts in Canada against federal and provincial vaccine mandates? While there have been numerous challenges at both the federal and provincial levels, arbitrators have been exceptionally deferential to the mandates, agreeing, in particular, with the federal government’s rationale that vaccine mandates are justified to protect the safety of the workplace. Given this, and the fact that courts are loath to intervene, federal government vaccine mandates in Canada have remained almost entirely intact....

"The niceties of our legal system’s culture of deference aside, Canada is increasingly an outlier amongst comparable advanced Western democracies in how our governments, especially the federal government, are handling the end game of the pandemic. On May 2, Switzerland, and Greece at the same time, lifted all remaining pandemic-related travel restrictions. Visitors, and returning residents, no longer need to show proof of vaccination, proof of recovery, or a recent negative test. Even New Zealand, which had one of the strictest pandemic responses in the world while pursuing a “zero Covid” policy, has not required domestic travellers to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to fly domestically since April 13, and, as of May 1, international travellers no longer need to show proof of vaccination to board a flight.

"Given that other advanced Western countries are walking back pandemic rules and clearly have the end game in sight, why is the Trudeau government not easing its vaccine mandates? It’s becoming increasingly clear that, at this point, it’s not about the science. The rationale for mandates was originally to curb transmission of the virus, but, in the wake of the highly transmissible Omicron variant and its newer sub-variants, this renders vaccine mandates absolutely nonsensical, given that the vaccinated — even those with three or even four doses — are becoming infected and are transmitting the virus. This was even recognized by the World Health Organization [WHO] in an April 2021 policy brief. For whatever it’s worth, the WHO says vaccine mandates should be used 'only as an absolute last resort.' Many countries have gotten the memo — but not the Trudeau government."

New Delhi government looks at smog lockdown

Schools close as smog-laden India capital considers lockdown | CTV News - Sheikh Saaliq & Shonal Ganguly, AP:

November 17, 2021 - ""Authorities closed schools indefinitely and shut down some coal-burning power plants Wednesday to reduce air pollution in India's smog-shrouded capital and neighbouring states, as the country weighs an unprecedented and more far-reaching step: a lockdown in New Delhi....

"The New Delhi state government said it is open to the idea of a weekend lockdown to reduce automobile traffic and potentially other air-polluting activity in the city, and it is awaiting the go-ahead from India's Supreme Court. A decision could come as early as Nov. 24. It's not clear how extensive the lockdown would be. Authorities are discussing whether to allow industries to continue operating.

"Some experts said a lockdown would achieve very little in controlling pollution and would instead cause disruptions in the economy and harm the livelihoods of millions of people. 'This is not the solution that we are looking for, because this is hugely disruptive. And we also have to keep in mind that the economy is already under pressure, poor people are at risk,' said Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director at the Center for Science and Environment, a research and advocacy organization in New Delhi....

"Besides closing schools and shutting down some power plants, the Commission for Air Quality Management ordered a stop to construction until Nov. 21 and banned trucks carrying non-essential goods. The panel also directed the affected states to encourage work from home for half of the employees in all private offices.

"Levels of dangerous particles in New Delhi's air Wednesday were as high as seven times the safe level, climbing above 300 micrograms per cubic meter in some parts of the city. The World Health Organization designates the safe level as 25. Forecasters warned air quality will worsen before the arrival of cold winds next week that will blow away the smog.

"Earlier this month, air pollution reached the 'severe' level in the capital, and residents faced bouts of heavy, multiday pollution. That prompted the Supreme Court last week to order state and federal governments to take 'imminent and emergency' action. New Delhi authorities responded by proposing a lockdown and closing schools for a week....

"Experts say such emergency measures are not helpful in the long run. 'These are done only to ensure that you don't worsen the situation, that you shave off the peak. But it is not a silver bullet that is going to just clean the air immediately,' Roychowdhury said."

67% have Covid antibodies in India

Covid-19 antibodies detected in 67% of India’s population | The Guardian - Hannah Ellis-Petersen:

July 21, 2021 - "Covid-19 antibodies have been detected in 67% of the population of India, according to a new survey, indicating how widely the virus spread through communities during the second wave. India’s fourth national sero-survey, which examines the prevalence of Covid-19 antibodies either through infection or vaccination, found that 67.6% of the population of more than 1.3 billion has coronavirus antibodies.

"The survey also demonstrated the slow pace of India’s vaccination programme. Of those surveyed, 62.2% had not been vaccinated, 24.8% had taken one dose and 13% were fully vaccinated.

"The survey result marks a significant rise from the last such survey which was conducted in December and January and found that just 24% of the population had antibodies. This recent survey was carried out in the final weeks of June and beginning of July, just as the second wave had abated, interviewing almost 29,000 people across India....

"Balram Bhargava, director general of the Indian Council for Medical Research ... warned that the survey showed 400 million Indians still did not have antibodies, and so were vulnerable to the third wave that experts are predicting will hit India within the next few months. In states such as Kerala and Assam, there has already been a severe spike in cases in recent days.

"The high prevalence of antibodies was mainly attributed to the virulent second wave which struck India in April. The virus spread like wildfire through both urban and rural areas, overwhelming hospitals and leading to a widespread shortage of oxygen ... fuelled by the highly transmissible Delta variant which emerged in India.

India’s official death toll from Covid-19 is more than 400,000 but that is believed to be a huge undercount, particularly when taking into consideration the results of the latest serosurvey. A new report released by the Centre for Global Development this week concluded that excess deaths in India during the pandemic could be as high as 4.7 million, 10 times the official toll.

"In the latest sero-survey, the age group with the highest prevalence was the 45-60 bracket, where over 77% had Covid-19 antibodies, while 66% of those between 18 and 44 were found to have antibodies."

Covid + lockdowns both hammering India's poor

Hunger stalks India's poor in COVID-19 pandemic double blow | CNA - AFP/jt:

May 30, 2021 - "Rasheeda Jaleel lives in fear that she may not be able to feed her seven children as millions of Indian families are forced into poverty by a devastating new coronavirus wave. The 40-year-old, her husband Abdul Jaleel, 65, and the children already survive on just one meal a day....

"The coronavirus has killed 160,000 in eight weeks, overwhelmed hospitals and shut many businesses in India. Experts warn that another crisis is looming, with rising levels of hunger among poor Indians already reeling from a first lockdown last year. 'It's a double crisis that the poor in the country are facing - there is the health crisis and there is also an income economic crisis," Anjali Bhardwaj from the Right to Food Campaign told AFP....

"More than 7.3 million jobs were lost in April [2021] alone, according to the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy. That means more pain in a country where 90 per cent of the workforce is in the informal sector with no social safety net, and where millions do not qualify for emergency government rations.

"'A lot of people went into poverty last year, they went into debt, and ... they had to cut back on food consumption,' Associate Professor Amit Basole, one of the university study's authors, told AFP. 'So the second wave is coming on top of a very precarious, stressed situation.'

"In last year's lockdown, about 100 million people lost their jobs in India. After restrictions were lifted, around 15 per cent failed to find employment by the end of 2020 - including 47 per cent of female workers, the Azim Premji University study found. Many who returned to work had to settle for lower pay, leaving them more vulnerable when the second wave hit....

"'The fear is that we ... get locked into a longish-term depressed economy where there is low aggregate demand because people's jobs and incomes are not coming back. And because they are not coming back, it ... perpetuates its own cycle,' Basole said.

"Bhupinder Singh, a micro-financier who has distributed food to the needy during the two lockdowns, has seen desperation rise among hundreds of unemployed men sleeping rough beside a busy Delhi highway. When he arrives with food packets, a cry of excitement goes up and men run to the back of his car and form a long queue.

"'People are stuck here out of helplessness,' Sunil Thakur, 50, who lost his job as a hotel waiter during the lockdown, told AFP. 'If they come with food, we get to eat ... If they don't come, we'll stay hungry.'

Lockdown zealots scarier than the coronavirus

Lockdown fanatics scare me far more than Covid-19 | Spiked - Brendan O'Neill:

May 8, 2020 - "I know I’m meant to be scared of Covid-19. But I’m far more fearful of the lockdown fanatics. These people who are so blase about the halting of economic life, and who bristle at any suggestion that the lockdown should be eased, pose a graver threat to the future of the UK than coronavirus does. They are a menace to liberty, reason and people’s livelihoods. Our society is taking steps to tackle Covid – now we need a huge collective effort to face down lockdown fanaticism....

"Here’s why lockdown fanaticism unnerves me more than Covid-19. The coronavirus pandemic is clearly a very serious health challenge. It is right that we take it seriously and that we devote as many of society’s resources as possible to ensuring that it doesn’t impact on the populace too harshly. It is right to propose social-distancing measures, which is what we had before the lockdown was imposed. But where Covid is proving to be less lethal than we first feared, lockdown fanaticism is proving to be more lethal.

"The Covid threat is not the apocalypse we were warned about. Its death rate is low. Its impact on younger people is negligible. Just 0.75 per cent of deaths in the UK have been among under-40s, and the majority of those were people with underlying health conditions.... The horror stories that were spread about Covid-19 by government officials and media fearmongers have been exposed as inaccurate, and in some cases hysterical. As the government adviser Professor Robert Dingwall says, the government has ‘effectively terrorised’ us into ‘believing that this is a disease that is going to kill you’. When in the vast majority of cases that simply isn’t true....

"So, coronavirus is proving manageable. It has not overwhelmed our health systems. It is not the plague. It is mild or even asymptomatic in most people. Society can handle it. What society can’t handle much more of, though, is lockdown fanaticism. This is a more destructive force than Covid-19.

"Covid is just a virus. It doesn’t know what it is doing. It spreads to survive. But the lockdown fanatics are conscious human beings. They know – or ought to – the destructiveness of the path they are carving out for Britain and other nations. They know the economic calamity and anti-social culture of fear they are foisting upon society, with all the mass unemployment, denigration of public services, and even death that this will cause. And yet they carry on.

"Britain is on the brink of the worst recession since the Great Frost of 1709, according to the Bank of England. Others are predicting an utterly unprecedented 13 per cent contraction in national output. Millions will lose their jobs. And that’s just the UK. More than 100 million Indians have lost their jobs as a result of the global contagion of lockdown. Many will be plunged into hunger, and worse. The International Labor Organization says 1.5 billion people around the world are at risk of losing their livelihoods. The halting of economic life and production and transportation could lead to a global ‘hunger catastrophe’, says the UN. I hope the lockdown fanatics think about that next time they post a pic of their latest loaf of sourdough.

"But they don’t think about it. Not seriously. They treat it as incidental.... Or, worse, they engage in a political sleight of hand. They say job losses, rising mental-health problems, lack of money and a global downturn that will hit the poor severely are also down to Covid. ‘Covid-19 is giving rise to economic problems, too’, they occasionally say. No. We cannot allow this. It is not Covid that is destroying livelihoods and liberties – it is our societies’ historically unprecedented, ill-thought-through, contagion-like authoritarian response to Covid; it is lockdown fanaticism.

"They need to take some responsibility. Covid can be excused; it’s a virus. The lockdown fanatics cannot be excused. Their extremism is hampering sensible government action, stymieing open public debate, and nurturing economic catastrophe. They must be held to account. More than that, they must be opposed. We need a return to reason, freedom and productivity."

Parts of India may have achieved herd immunity to COVID-19

Coronavirus: some India slums ‘may have reached herd immunity’, study finds | South China Morning Post - Bloomberg:

July 30, 2020 - "'Mumbai’s slums may have reached herd immunity,' said Jayaprakash Muliyil, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of India’s National Institute of Epidemiology, and the retired head of one of its premier medical colleges. 'If people in Mumbai want a safe place to avoid infection, they should probably go there.'

"The findings of the study, which was conducted by municipal authorities and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, suggest that despite efforts to contain its spread, Mumbai’s poorest places may have unwittingly pursued the controversial strategy of herd immunity.... About 57 per cent of surveyed people in the slums of Dahisar, Chembur and Matunga had antibodies in their blood, compared to 21.2 per cent found in an April study in New York City, and 14 per cent reported in Stockholm in May.

"A 'hands-off' approach has been criticised in places like Sweden.... But the findings from Mumbai’s slums, where the population is young and less predisposed to severe cases of Covid-19, may support public health strategies more focused on protecting the vulnerable without trying to suppress the virus completely.

"With social-distancing generally impossible, Mumbai’s slums are singularly well-suited for the coronavirus’ spread. Dharavi, the largest, is home to some 1 million people and has a population density of 277,136 per square kilometre. As many as 80 people often share a public toilet, and families of eight regularly packed in a 100-square-foot room.

"Yet the slums have seen steep drops in infections in recent weeks after cases first erupted in April, even as India’s overall cases grow at the fastest pace globally. Credit has largely been given to the intensive containment measures officials implemented in the slums, like door-to-door health screenings and rapidly-erected quarantine facilities. The serological findings suggest another possibility: the crisis may be largely over because the virus has spread efficiently, not because it was stopped.

"Muliyil said.... 'The virus doesn’t worry about your quarantine and it is much more efficient than your efforts to contain it.'  He does, however, credit the government’s containment measures with keeping mortality rates low in the slums, because the proactive surveillance ensured that cases were caught early and given high quality care.... Dharavi has recorded 253 deaths.

"Growing herd immunity may also be behind the dip in cases in the capital city of New Delhi, said Muliyil, where a study in early July found that a quarter of the population had been exposed. Epidemiologists generally believe that infection levels must reach 60 per cent to create herd immunity. But exposure concentrated in the populations least able to socially distance could still slow the overall spread of infection.

"In Mumbai overall, new cases dropped to the lowest tally in almost three months this week, although the July antibody survey found only 16 per cent had been exposed to the virus among those living in places where social distancing is more feasible, like apartment buildings and houses."

Comparing Covid19 Deaths in America & Sweden

by George J. Dance

Today's question: Which country has suffered the most deaths per capita from or with COVID-19 up to now? Is it the United States, which despite mostly locking down at the state level has had over 150,000 deaths? Brazil, which did the same, but has 90,000 dead in a smaller population? The United Kingdom, which locked down nationally but suffered 45,000 deaths in an even smaller population? Or Sweden, which never locked down at all?

The answer is None of the Above. According to Worldometer's world coronavirus dashboard, the U.S. has suffered the most deaths, but in a population of 330 million that comes to just 467 deaths per million (467/M) only 10th highest. Brazil's per capita rate is even lower; it had only 425/M deaths, bad enough only for 12th place. The UK was hit rather hard, suffering 677/M deaths; but that was only bad enough for third highest.

No, the COVID death capital of the world – the country with far and away the most deaths per capita – is San Marino. San Marino, a microstate in (and completely surrounded by) northern Italy, has no active cases of the virus. It reported 699 cases in the spring, from which 652 people recovered, and 42 died. However, San Marino's population is just 33,000 – meaning that the country suffered a whopping 1,238/M deaths.

Just behind the UK, with the fourth highest death rate per capita, is Andorra, another  microstate on the France / Spain border. Andorra has had 922 cases and 52 deaths. However, given Andorra's population of just 77,000, that equals 673/M deaths.

Another European microstate, Lichtenstein, reported only one death; but that one death equals a per capita rate of 26/M deaths. In contrast, India (where more than 36,000 people have died to date from COVID-19) also has a death rate of 26/M.

There is a reason to report deaths per capita. Giving only raw numbers can exaggerate death tolls in larger countries – can can make them seem worse than they are – and giving per-capita deaths as well is a way to correct for that bias. However, as I hope my examples show, reporting only deaths per capita – counting Lichtenstein's one death as equal to India's 36,000 – similarly exaggerates the death toll for smaller countries.

I was reminded of that this month, in the context of the ongoing online debate over Sweden. That country, as I am sure all know by now, never locked down, something lockdown advocates predicted would lead to mass death; ever since, many of them have been trying to prove that mass death has, in fact, occurred there. In May that took the form of misleading assertions that Sweden had "the highest number of deaths per capita in Europe;" in June, that the country had "the fifth highest death rate per capita in the world." Since both statistics were debunked, the comparison with America has risen to take their place. Some recent examples:
  • "Since the deniers held Sweden up as an example, deaths exploded to 137% of US per capita deaths. They are now fifth in the world with COVID-19 deaths dwarfing those in the US with 512 deaths per million." (Eureporter, June 30
  • "Yet, the Swedish death rate is unnerving. Sweden has a death toll greater than the United States: 564 deaths per million inhabitants compared with 444, as of July 27." (U.S. New & World Report, July 27
  • "[Sweden] ranks eighth among countries with the highest number of COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people. It outranks the U.S. and Brazil, which are the world's first and second worst-hit nations in terms of total cases, according to Johns Hopkins University." (Newsweek, July 30
Does Sweden have more or less deaths than the United States? If one looks at total deaths, the U.S. clearly has more, over 25 times more. But if one instead looks only at deaths per capita, Sweden appears to be doing much worse. For a fairer comparison, one should give both totals; which, to its credit, one source of the 'per capita' statistic was fair-minded enough to do:
More than three months later, the coronavirus is blamed for 5,420 deaths in Sweden, according to the World Health Organization. That might not sound especially horrendous compared with the more than 129,000 Americans who have died. But Sweden is a country of only 10 million people. Per million people, Sweden has suffered 40 percent more deaths than the United States. (New York Times, July 15)
As of today Sweden has experienced 5,739 deaths, or 568/M. The U.S. 7-day average of COVID-19 deaths is currently, 1,058 per day. The United States has suffered more deaths from COVID-19 in the last 6 days than Sweden has during the entire pandemic. Yet reporting only the per-capita figures, without context, gives a misleading impression that the much smaller country – Sweden – is doing worse. Which is all that the comparison does, and all that it is designed to do.

There is a second way that reporting only national per capita deaths exaggerates the death toll in smaller countries over larger. The smaller the country, the greater the chance that everyone in it gets infected in a short time. (That is the sad fate that befell San Marino.) However, in a larger country like the United States or Brazil, the virus must take a longer time to spread through it; meaning that there will be regions of the country where it has never showed up, parts where it has passed, and parts where it is still raging. A national death figure will be an average of all three types of region, understating the actual death toll in the areas affected.

As an example, Canada has a seemingly lower death toll of 8,929 or 236/M. However, giving only that figure hides the real impact of the virus on one province, Quebec, which suffered 5,673 deaths or 667/M: almost as many deaths as Sweden, and more deaths per capita.

Similarly, according to Worldometer's U.S. coronavirus page, six American states have more deaths, and more deaths per capita, than Sweden:
New Jersey – 15,888 – 1,789/M
New York – 32,754 – 1,684/M
Massachusetts – 8,595 – 1,247/M
Michigan – 6,443 – 645/M
Illinois – 7,670 – 605/M
Pennsylvania – 7,289 – 569/M

Another three states have more deaths, but not more deaths per capita, than Sweden:
California – 9,003 – 228/M
Texas – 6,703 – 231/M
Florida – 6,587 – 307/M

A further six states have more deaths per capita, but less deaths, than Sweden:
Connecticut – 4,431 – 1,243/M
Rhode Island – 1,007 – 951/M
Louisiana – 3,929 – 845/M
Delaware – 581 – 597/M
Maryland – 3,488 – 577/M
Mississippi - 2,693 - 569/M

Did someone mention Brazil? According to the New York Times, three Brazilian states also have more deaths, and more deaths per capita, than Sweden:
Rio de Janeiro – 13,198 – 770/M
Ceará – 7,643 – 840/M
Pernambuco – 6,484 – 680/M

I hope these statistics put Sweden's death toll – 5,739 deaths, or 568/M – into proper perspective. Unfortunately, I do not expect them to end the online debate. Fortunately, though, I expect the debate to end soon anyway.

As the American death toll continues to rise, it becomes increasingly obvious that the state lockdowns did not stop the disease, but merely slowed it down, and that they have not prevented deaths so much as merely postponed them. With America adding more deaths per week than Sweden experienced in total, it is only a matter of time – a month, if the current death rate holds – before U.S. deaths per capita exceed those of Sweden. At which time, the per capita comparison will no longer be to Sweden's disadvantage, and I expect lockdown lovers to quickly and quietly drop it.

3rd World lockdowns may kill more than COVID19

Unicef warns lockdown could kill more than Covid-19 as model predicts 1.2 million child deaths | The Telegraph - Sarah Newey:

May 13, 2020 - "The risk of children dying from malaria, pneumonia or diarrhoea in developing countries is spiralling due to the pandemic and 'far outweighs any threat presented by the coronavirus', Unicef has warned.... Stefan Peterson, chief of health at Unicef, cautioned that the blanket lockdowns imposed in many low and middle income [countries] are not an effective way to control Covid-19 and could have deadly repercussions.

"'Indiscriminate lockdown measures do not have an optimal effect on the virus,' he told The Telegraph. 'If you’re asking families to stay at home in one room in a slum, without food or water, that won’t limit virus transmission.... I’m concerned that lockdown measures have been copied between countries for lack of knowing what to do, rarely with any contextualisation for the local situation,' he said....

"According to a stark report published in Lancet Global Health journal on Wednesday, almost 1.2 million children could die in the next six months due to the disruption to health services and food supplies caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The modelling, by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Unicef, found that child mortality rates could rise by as much as 45 per cent ... while maternal deaths could increase by almost 39 per cent.

"Dr Peterson said these figures were in part a reflection of stringent restrictions in much of the world that prevent people leaving their homes without documentation, preventing them from accessing essential health care services.... Dr Peterson warned that these trends have resulted in a reduction in the 'effective utilisation of services' - a shift which, in some places, could be more dangerous than the virus itself.  And lockdowns have a heavy economic toll, which could trigger a rise in poverty and malnutrition.

"The research looks at the consequences of disruption in 118 low and middle income countries, based on three scenarios. Even in the most optimistic case, where access to health services dropped by 15 per cent and child wasting rose by 10 per cent, an additional 253,500 children and 12,200 mothers died. But a worst-case scenario, where services are reduced by 45 per cent and the proportion of children who are wasting grows by 50 per cent, could result in 1.16 million additional child fatalities and 57,000 maternal deaths in just six months.

"The modelling projected that India would see ... the largest number of additional deaths in children under five and [in] maternal mortality, followed by Nigeria. Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Indonesia are also likely to be hit hard.

"Such a situation has some precedent - research has shown that in 2014, during the Ebola outbreak in west Africa, more people died from indirect effects than the disease itself. But the scale of the pandemic means the consequences will be far greater....

"Dr Peterson urged countries not to impose draconian lockdowns, but to focus on identifying hotspots so that regional restrictions less damaging for public health can be introduced. He said he was concerned that the current battle against Covid-19 was turning into a 'child’s rights crisis' and robbing a generation of their health, education and economic prospects."

Indian government wants to ban Bitcoin

Its Official: Indian Government Wants to Ban Bitcoin - Davit Babayan, Bitcoin News:

July 22, 2019 - "The inter-ministerial committee set up by former Indian finance minister Arun Jaitley recommends a ban on bitcoin.

"According to a report published today, the Subhash Garg committee believes that cryptocurrencies cannot serve the purpose of currency. Calling them “'rivate cryptocurrencies” over their non-sovereign nature, the committee wrote that they are inconsistent with the essential functions of money/currency, adding that they support the stance taken by the Reserve Bank of India [RBI] to impose a banking ban on them.
The committee endorses the stand taken by the RBI to eliminate the interface of institutions regulated by the RBI from cryptocurrencies. The Committee also recommends that all exchanges ... and other financial system participants should be prohibited from dealing with cryptocurrencies.

Accordingly, the Committee has recommended a law banning the cryptocurrencies in India and criminalising carrying on of any activities connected with cryptocurrencies in India.
"The inter-ministerial report follows months of confusions regarding the bitcoin’s legal status in India. Bloomberg Quint in early June claimed that the Narendra Modi government wanted to impose 10-year prison-time on cryptocurrency traders. The news service cited a piece of paper that allegedly was a part of an anti-crypto draft bill. A month later, another document from the same law showed that the Indian government was looking to ban cryptocurrencies. Nevertheless, Ministry of Finance representative Anurag Singh Thakur ... wrote in response to lawmakers that a government-appointed Interministerial Committee [was] looking into the matter....

"India’s Ministry of Finance is now able to stamp the Garg committee proposal, meaning it would soon come before the lawmakers in the lower and upper house of the Indian parliament. A ban would go into effect once the majority of politicians would approve it, which is most likely since both the houses have the Narendra Modi government in [a majority].

"The last thing standing between Garg Committee’s proposal and a full-fledged bitcoin ban is the Supreme Court of India. On July 23, the apex court is likely to give verdict on whether or not the RBI ban on bitcoin [is] unconstitutional."

Indian libertarians say it with spraypaint

One Graffiti at a time: A Libertarian’s quest to bring accountability in tax spending - Aprameya Rao, DNA India:

January 20, 2019 - "During the day, 29-year-old Jaimine Vaishnav is just another lecturer in a Mumbai college. On certain nights, however, he is a different person all together. Armed with a can of spray paint, Jaimine along with his group of followers set out to different parts of Mumbai, blemishing walls with provocative slogans like 'Taxation Is Theft' & 'Tax for Corruption.'

"Jaimine and his group call their nocturnal activity 'grafittivism'.... Since July 2017, their 'graffitivism' has been seen across several public properties in Navi Mumbai, Kurla and Thane.

"The Libertarian idea that taxation is a form of theft is the inspiration... 'We pay taxes but there is no accountability in the way it is spent. It seems we are paying taxes for potholes, corruption, statues, inflation, improper standard of living and poverty,' says Jaimine.

"For the group, which includes Jaimine’s former students, working professionals and businessmen, graffiti is a peaceful way to trigger public discourse.... 'Graffiti is a harmless yet powerful protest, an art form to express my anger and frustration against the lack of accountability on tax spending,' says a member of the group who is a senior corporate executive during the day.

"Nevertheless, Libertarianism, which stresses on liberty and individual freedoms, remains a little-known ideology in India.... Chintan Girish Modi, an educator and researcher, adds that ... 'Libertarianism is viewed with suspicion by the Left and the Right because it values human rights as well as free markets which are traditionally seen as incompatible'....

"Thus, it comes as no surprise that Libertarian ideas are largely confined to social media. While Jaimine’s small group of followers actively discuss Libertarianism on a WhatsApp group, their 'graffitivism' is only occasional and often spontaneous due to lack of time."

Libertarian land reform in South Africa

Restoring Property Rights to Generational Apartheid Victims - Atlas Network:

"Maria Mothupi held the official deed to her land for the first time.... Until she was 99 years old, she had never experienced living in her own home or in a home legally owned by her family, because she was only two years old when the 1913 Land Act banned land ownership by black people in South Africa — a law that continues to have consequences today, despite its repeal more than two decades ago....

"This unlikely happy chapter toward the end of a hard life came about thanks to the Free Market Foundation (FMF) of South Africa’s Khaya Lam (My House) Land Reform project. FMF’s pilot project focused on the Ngwathe municipal area of the Free State province, where FMF Director Eustace Davie estimates that there are about 20,000 houses for which the ownership rights have not been documented and registered.

"The Khaya Lam project has already provided resources to carry out the conversion of some of these properties — out of an estimated 5 to 7 million that are eligible countrywide — to freehold title ownership.... Progress, however, has been slow.... Distrust, ambiguity, and prohibitive costs have all worked together to prevent a more rapid transfer of otherwise available titles. Through bulk processing and other cost reduction measures, FMF has reduced the cost from about $378 to $122 per title deed.

"The major purpose of the Ngwathe pilot project was to determine the most rapid and cost-efficient method of registering the rights of the homeowners and placing them in possession of title deeds that prove their rights and enable them to trade with their property legally, in any way they please.... More than 800 of the Ngwathe houses had either already been converted or were in the process of being converted by the end of October 2015, and by January 2016 FMF had 300 conversions sponsored in Cape Town and another 60 in the town of Grabouw.

"'Our task is to make everyone in the country aware of how the country will change for the better if we can extinguish the effects of one of the greatest crimes of apartheid: depriving black South Africans of property rights for 78 years,' Davie said. 'Calls for information are coming in from all over the country'....

"FMF is one of Atlas Network’s more-than-450 global partners working to restore and strengthen property rights.... Liberty Institute in New Delhi, India ... developed an innovative project that provides villagers with GPS devices and satellite mapping technology in order to prove their farming claims to the government and establish legal title to their own ancestral lands..... [I]in Honduras, where some believe uncertainty in property rights accounts for as much as 4 percent of their prohibitive loan interest rates, Atlas Network partner Fundación Eléutera has worked during the past year to help government leaders transform an ongoing and costly land titling digitalization effort by using blockchain technology....

"By protecting property rights, FMF through its Khaya Lam land titling project and these other projects by Atlas Network partners all strengthen individual liberty and prosperity."

1.5M Muslims back fatwa against ISIS terrorism

70,000 clerics issue fatwa against terrorism, 15 lakh Muslims support it - Times of India - Priyangi Agwaral:

December 9, 2015 - "On the last day of Urs-e-Razvi of Dargah Aala Hazrat [the annual memorial festival for Ahmed Raza Khan (1856-1921), held at his tomb / shrine in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India - ed.],  nearly 70,000 clerics came together and passed a fatwa against terrorist organizations, including IS, Taliban and al-Qaida. These are 'not Islamic organizations,' the clerics said to a sea of followers, adding that the members of these outfits were 'not Muslims'. Around 15 lakh [1.5 million - ed.] followers who visited the Urs put their signatures to a document circulated at the Urs, protesting terrorist strikes.

"Mufti Mohammed Saleem Noori, one of the clerics who passed the fatwa told TOI on Tuesday, 'From Sunday onwards, when the annual Urs began, members of Dargah Aala Hazrat have been distributing forms among followers seeking signatures to show that those signing stand against terrorism. Nearly 15 lakh Muslims have recorded their protest. Around 70,000 clerics from across the world, who were part of the event, passed the fatwa'....

"Hazrat Subhan Raza Khan, chairperson of the influential Dargah Aala Hazrat, said that following the Paris attacks, it was decided that a fatwa should be passed at the Urs this year, so the message went out loud and clear that the Muslim community condemns terrorism.

"'It is written in the Quran that killing one innocent person is equivalent to killing all humanity,' said Mohammed Ehsan Raza Khan, Sajjadanasheen (hereditary head) of [Khan's] shrine.

"Mohammad Farogh-ul Quadri, secretary-general, World Islamic Mission, UK, said, 'I condemn the barbaric terrorist attack in Paris on innocent civilians and call for an international ban on the radical extremist IS and its counterparts with different names across the world'....

"Clerics also opposed the move by France and other countries to bomb Syria, saying innocent people, including women and children, have died in such strikes. They said the powerful western nations should focus on stopping terrorists, but not at the cost of taking the lives of innocent people.

"Dargah Aala Hazrat has been campaigning against terrorism for the last one year. On Eid this year, clerics here announced that if a man involved in terrorism is killed, 'namaz-e-janaza' would not be read during his funeral services. This prayer is an important part of the last rites in Islam."
