Economists urge Trump to reject protectionism

National Taxpayers Union - More Than 1,100 Economists Join NTU to Voice Opposition to Tariffs, Protectionism:

May 3, 2018 - "The current political moment has seen new trade barriers erected as well as additional threats to rescind trade agreements and play politics with trade conventions that have benefited everyone. National Taxpayers Union is joined by more than 1,100 economists urging opposition to this new economic protectionism in the following letter.

May 3, 2018
Open Letter to President Trump and Congress:

"In 1930, 1,028 economists urged Congress to reject the protectionist Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. Today, Americans face a host of new protectionist activity, including threats to withdraw from trade agreements, misguided calls for new tariffs in response to trade imbalances, and the imposition of tariffs on washing machines, solar components, and even steel and aluminum used by U.S. manufacturers.

"Congress did not take economists’ advice in 1930, and Americans across the country paid the price. The undersigned economists and teachers of economics strongly urge you not to repeat that mistake..... [note -- the following text is taken from the 1930 letter]

"We are convinced that increased protective duties would be a mistake. They would operate, in general, to increase the prices which domestic consumers would have to pay.... Construction, transportation and public utility workers, professional people and those employed in banks, hotels, newspaper offices, in the wholesale and retail trades, and scores of other occupations would clearly lose.... The vast majority of farmers, also, would lose....

"Our export trade, in general, would suffer. Countries cannot permanently buy from us unless they are permitted to sell to us, and the more we restrict the importation of goods from them by means of ever higher tariffs the more we reduce the possibility of our exporting to them. Such action would inevitably provoke other countries to pay us back in kind by levying retaliatory duties against our goods.

"Finally, we would urge our Government to consider the bitterness which a policy of higher tariffs would inevitably inject into our international relations. A tariff war does not furnish good soil for the growth of world peace."

Reason, Cato named in climate-change probe

Reason Foundation Included in Climate-Change Dragnet Subpoena to ExxonMobil - Hit & Run : Reason.com - Ron Bailey:

May 4, 2016 - "In March, six Democratic state attorneys-general and the independent attorney general from the U.S. Virgin Islands joined forces with climate activist and former Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore to annnounce a legal campaign to intimidate climate change skeptics....

"The heart of this anti-free-speech effort has been a series of subpoenas to ExxonMobil demanding that the oil giant supply various attorneys general with all communications it has had since January 1, 1977 with groups that address scientific and policy issues with respect to climate change. On Tuesday, one of those subpoenas to ExxonMobil, a March 15 fishing expedition by former EPA lawyer and current Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude Walker, was made public, revealing the wide extent of this intimidation campaign. How wide? One of the organizations mentioned in Walker's subpoena is the Reason Foundation....

"Reason is far from alone. The subpoena lists nearly 100 think tanks, advocacy groups, lobbyists, and university centers with which Walker believes ExxonMobil may have had communications concerning 'research, advocacy, strategy, reports, studies, reviews, or public opinions regarding Climate Change.' These include the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the George Mason University Law and Economics Center, the American Enterprise Institute, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, the Cato Institute, the National Black Chamber of Commerce, the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies, the Heritage Foundation, and on and on.

"The attorneys-general are seeking to discover some sort of an ExxonMobil-financed conspiracy aimed at undermining public confidence in the scientific consensus that man-made climate change is real and a big problem. Some who are worried about the deleterious effects of climate change have grown weary of trying to persuade their fellow citizens that the scientific evidence is on their side, and so now want to outlaw expressions of disagreement with that consensus.

"For example, a prominent group of climate activists sent a letter in September 2015 to the Department of Justice suggesting that Attorney General Loretta Lynch open a 'RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) investigation of corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change, as a means to forestall America's response to climate change.' At a congressional hearing in March, Lynch testified that her office has considered taking legal action against groups promoting climate change skepticism."

Thomas Massie receives Taxpayers' Friend Award

Massie Honored as Taxpayers' Friend | The River City News:

September 18, 2014 - "This week, the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) presented Congressman Thomas Massie with the Taxpayers’ Friend Award.  Only 45 of the 435 Congressmen in the House of Representatives received the award.  Congressman Massie was the highest rated of all Kentucky Representatives.

"'With so many remaining doubts that our economy has completely turned a corner, it's never been more important for Washington to change direction on fiscal policy,' NTU President Pete Sepp said. 'Fortunately, the taxpayers of Kentucky’s Fourth District could count on Rep. Massie to help put our nation on a saner path. Day in and day out, Rep. Massie earned the title of "Taxpayers' Friend."'

"'On my first day in Congress, I pledged to be an unwavering advocate for personal liberty, economic freedom, and constitutionally limited government,' said Massie. 'I will always fight for the fiscal responsibility that Kentucky’s and America’s taxpayers deserve from their government.'

"Since 1979, NTU has given the Taxpayers’ Friend Award to Congressmen who work to reduce taxes, regulation, federal spending, and national debt.  The award is based on House and Senate votes affecting fiscal policy."

Left / Right Alliance for defense cuts

Stewart J. Lawrence: A Left / Tea Party Alliance? - Counterpunch , Jan. 26, 2011:

January 26, 2011: "[P]rogressive groups like the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) and the Ralph Nader-founded Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) are now working in a de facto coalition with some 23 conservative groups, including Grover Norquist’s tAmericans for Tax Reform, and the national Tea Party group FreedomWorks, to push for deep cuts in US defense spending.

"The coalition has come together around the findings of President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Commission, which included a call for $100 billion in defense cuts. And at least one prominent congressman, eight-term Texas Republican Kevin Brady, who marched on Washington, DC with the Tea Party last fall to win their support for his re-election, has already moved to incorporate the Commission's recommendations into federal legislation."
