Billionaire CEO sees need to seize more property

The billionaire CEO of JPMorganChase foresees a need for governments to expropriate more private property to more effectively fight climate change.

Private property may need to be seized by federal government, corporations to advance climate initiatives, says JPMorgan CEO | The Blaze - Candace Hathaway:

April 7, 2023 - "JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently suggested in his annual letter to shareholders that the federal government and large corporations may have to seize private property from U.S. citizens to advance climate initiatives, which he claimed are not being implemented fast enough to avoid potential climate-related crises.

"According to Dimon's Tuesday letter, in order to acquire 'adequate investments fast enough for grid, solar, wind and pipeline initiatives,' governments and businesses may need to implement 'eminent domain.'

"Eminent domain is the ability of the government to take private property and convert it for public use following just compensation to the property's owner.

"Dimon argue[d] that private properties may need to be seized to permit green energy projects and grow the nation's grid infrastructure. He expressed concern about having limited time to tackle the climate crisis and noted that not enough resources are being invested in green initiatives.

"Therefore, Dimon argued, it may be the right time to consider invoking eminent domain to avoid climate-related disasters....

"Dimon called on 'governments, businesses and non-governmental organizations' to align on their climate initiative efforts by making a 'massive global investment in clean energy technologies'.... 'The window for action to avert the costliest impacts of global climate change is closing,' he stated. 'The need to provide energy affordably and reliably for today, as well as make the necessary investments to decarbonize for tomorrow, underscores the inextricable links between economic growth, energy security and climate change. We need to do more, and we need to do so immediately'....

"'Polarization, paralysis and basic lack of analysis cannot keep us from addressing one of the most complex challenges of our time. Diverse stakeholders need to come together, seeking the best answers through engagement around our common interest,' he concluded."

Trump tried to seize widow's home for parking lot (video)

Remember When Donald Trump Tried to Bulldoze an Elderly Widow's Home to Build a Limo Parking Lot? : Anything Peaceful : Foundation for Economic Education:

July 20, 2015 - "Donald Trump is leading the GOP primary polls with 24 percent. Trump, as Reason's Matt Welch put it, may be a 'vulgar anti-intellect who cannot string a coherent paragraph together.' But he's also a consummate bully and crony capitalist who has never been shy about using government to coerce people who get in his way.

"In 1994, Trump got Atlantic City to condemn Vera Coking's home so that he could build limo parking for his Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. The Institute for Justice took on Trump in one of its first big eminent domain cases....

"Thanks to IJ, she was able to beat Trump and the city government and win the right to keep her property.

"Coking moved to a retirement home in 2010, having lived almost 50 years in her Atlantic City home. Coking's grandson finally sold the house in July 2014; less than two months later, the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino closed for lack of business."

LP of Canada wants Meyers expropriation reversed

Libertarians Call for Reversal on Canadian Military’s Expropriation of Farmer’s Land :: Wire Service Media:

January 27, 2014 - "Libertarian Party of Canada Leader Katrina Chowne is calling on the federal government to respect Canadian citizens' rights and to reverse its recent decision to expropriate a working family's land in order to expand the footprint of the Department of National Defence.

"The recent expropriation of a working family's land by the Canadian military offers Prime Minister Harper and his Conservative government a chance to clearly demonstrate their unwavering support for private property rights in Canada.

"The Canadian government has expropriated the property of Frank and Marjorie Meyers of Trenton Ontario in order to expand our military's capacity to protect our properties from invaders and foreign conquerors. The Meyers farm was granted to them in 1798 - before confederation....

"Meyers said he was approached to sell the land for market value about seven years ago, but he refused the offer. Now he says he's lost about 235 acres of farmland to the Department of National Defence. The spokesperson for Minister of National Defence Rob Nicholson said this expropriation was "critically important to the country and to the local community."

"While the Libertarian Party of Canada recognizes the need for a National Defence to protect our people and our rights, we call out the blatant irony that the federal government would seize upon one family's rights in the name of protecting others."

Canadian military takes 85-year-old farmer's home and land

Farmer loses land battle, though military grants him one last harvest - Canada, Editor's Picks - Macleans.ca - Michael Priscolanti:

October 1, 2013 - "Since the Harper Conservatives were first elected in 2006, they have proclaimed their plans to bring a specialized army unit to CFB Trenton, the country’s largest and busiest air force base.... The move is the highlight of a massive base expansion project that will inject millions of dollars into the local economy....

"But ... the plan didn’t sit well with a few local landowners, whose properties — unbeknownst to them — had been selected for JTF 2’s new 400-hectare home. 'Our world has been crushed,' one owner said at the time.... 'They drew a red line around these pieces of property, and ever since then everybody in there has been screwed.'

"When the government officially filed expropriation papers in February 2012, the Meyers family hired a lawyer and launched their only available appeal: an objection in front of an independent hearings officer. Their central argument was that the military had more than enough land to extend the base, and the Meyers’ 90 hectares weren’t necessary to complete the project. They also trumpeted the historical significance of the farm: the direct descendant of Capt. John Walden Meyers, a Loyalist war hero and founder of nearby Belleville, Ont., Frank Meyers farmed a portion of the very same plot of land King George III awarded to his legendary forefather for his service during the American Revolution. As Frank Meyers has said many times: 'This property didn’t come from the Canadian government, it came from the British government. So if the Queen wants it, let her come and see me.'"
