Chase Oliver wins Libertarian POTUS nomination

After a grueling seven ballots at the Libertarian National Convention, Chase Oliver won the party's presidential nomination, with >35% voting for None of the Above on the final ballot.

Chase Oliver Is the Libertarian Party's Presidential Pick | Reason | Eric Boehm:

May 26, 2023 - "Two years ago, Chase Oliver burst onto the Libertarian political scene by forcing a runoff in the Georgia Senate election — a result that ultimately determined the majority in the U.S. Senate. Now he can aim to leave an even bigger mark.

"Oliver won the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination in dramatic fashion Sunday night, prevailing on the seventh round of balloting after running second in each of the first five rounds. Oliver received 60.6 percent of the vote in the final round, finally clearing the 50 percent threshold for victory against 'none of the above,' the only alternative that remained on the ballot after Oliver narrowly won a sixth-round showdown with professor-turned-podcaster Michael Rectenwald, who had led the count in each of the first five rounds [and was removed from the ballot for the seventh round - gd].

"'I am extending my hand. Take it, and be a partner with me in liberty," Oliver said in his victory speech, making a pitch to his opponents within the Libertarian Party, which has been riven for the past two years by a deep divide over tactics and principles. It was a fitting end to a tempestuous convention that saw Libertarian delegates loudly boo former President Donald Trump during an unorthodox appearance by the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

"Oliver, a 38-year-old gay man from Atlanta with socially tolerant and pro-immigration views, delivered a passionate response after Trump's speech to the convention on Saturday. Now, he will get to spend the next six months competing directly against Trump and President Joe Biden, two men more than twice his age....

"Oliver's victory on Sunday night was a blow to the Mises Caucus, the right-leaning faction that took control of the Libertarian Party at the 2022 convention and that had orchestrated Trump's appearance at the convention. That faction's preferred candidate was Rectenwald.

"For much of Sunday's lengthy balloting process, it seemed like Rectenwald might narrowly prevail — even after giving a rambling, somewhat incoherent speech on Saturday night, after which he admitted that he'd been high on an edible. No candidate got close to an outright majority in the first round of balloting, completed in mid-afternoon on Sunday.... The second, third, and fourth rounds of voting whittled down the field but were hardly decisive. Rectenwald maintained his lead over Oliver...

"It was the fifth round that provided the first indication of the final outcome. With tech entrepreneur Lars Mapstead eliminated, Oliver and ter Maat swept up dozens of additional votes while Rectenwald's momentum faltered. After being eliminated in that round, ter Maat extended an endorsement to Oliver from the convention floor — in exchange for being Oliver's vice-presidential choice. (Unlike the Republicans and Democrats, the Libertarian Party selects the two positions in separate votes. But the winner of the presidential nomination typically has significant influence in the outcome of the second contest.).... ter Maat's embrace of Oliver seemed to tilt the outcome."

Reason on Libertarian POTUS race

Brian Doherty, the author of Radicals for Capitalism, posted a long dispatch on the Libertarian Party National Convention on the Reason website yesterday. While it was mostly devoted to The Story – Donald Trump's appearance at the convention – Doherty also reported on the POTUS nomination race within the party.

Inside the Libertarian Party's Decision To Host a Trump Speech | Reason | Brian Doherty:

May 24, 2024 - "It's certainly unusual for small political parties to invite their most charismatic rivals to come try to steal their voters.... But the L.P. leadership faction that engineered the stunt, including National Chair Angela McArdle, counter that it has already reaped a nearly unprecedented amount of media attention, bolstering the finances of a party that for the past two years has been bleeding money and membership. 'Convention sales, and donations, have been explosive following the announcement of Trump (and others) since the beginning of this month,' said Todd Hagopian, who has been L.P. treasurer since May 2022, via email. Hagopian, who opposed inviting L.P. competitors Trump, President Joe Biden, and the attending independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., said that full numbers won't be available until after the convention, but: 'Best period of fundraising since I've been on the board'....

"Part of the McArdle/Mises Caucus pitch for having the Trump and RFK Jr. circuses at the convention is that the much lesser-known L.P. presidential candidates will have the kind of spotlight they never otherwise would have dreamed of. And political reporters will be witnessing a nominating race that is currently wide open.

"The Mises Caucus is backing Michael Rectenwald, a former Marxist professor at New York University who became disillusioned with the politically correct 'social justice creed taking over universities all across the country.' Rectenwald railed against speech codes and microaggressions initially via an anonymous Twitter account, eventually suffering pushback from colleagues and the university. He retired in 2019 and embraced Rothbardian anarcho-capitalism. Rectenwald thinks his already-established relationships with such right-leaning media stars as Tim Pool and Glenn Beck make him the candidate most likely to bring more new attention to the party. (The Mises Caucus thinks Rectenwald has what it takes to help pivot a growing L.P. audience into being the linchpin of a new media empire.) He prides himself as being the candidate most dedicated to loudly and proudly hating the state and feels qualified to throw elbows on stage with Trump, whose foreign policy he sees as essentially indistinguishable from Biden. Rectenwald has raised over $67,000 as of the start of May.

"A wide range of party members and watchers from both sides of the divide think that the Mises Caucus will be coming into the "convention with around 40 percent to 48 percent of the body, not a dominating majority. A Mises Caucus convention strategy memo circulating this week tells members to vote Rectenwald and for Liberty Lockdown podcaster Clint Russell for vice president. (The two votes are separate, with president going first.) Another old Mises Caucus stalwart who didn't get the group's official nod, Joshua Smith, is as of this writing coming in fifth in the donation-based straw poll that will define which five of the nine candidates listed get to debate at the convention.

"Chase Oliver, another presidential hopeful, is an L.P. legend for having consigned the Republicans to a minority in the U.S. Senate in 2022, when he received over 2 percent of the vote in a Georgia Senate race, thus forcing a runoff that Republican Herschel Walker lost. He's been the only presidential hopeful to campaign in all 50 states, to "demonstrate the work ethic that I would bring to the table. So I feel great going into the convention, knowing so many delegates have gotten to see me face to face.' By doing so, Oliver believes he has beaten back the reputation his online detractors had tried to pin on him of being too lefty, too enamored of identity politics. 'I came to the party as part of the antiwar movement within the Democratic Party,' he admits, but now says he's a 'hardcore free marketer' and a straight-line Libertarian on everything from foreign policy to taxes to guns and has no tolerance for 'socialism and communism.' His appeal could roughly be described as more normie political-traditional than the fire breathers he is mostly competing with. Oliver has raised over $74,000 as of the start of May.

"Lars Mapstead, a tech entrepreneur who hit it big in early social media, is offering both an unusual strategic vision for L.P. impact and the ability to self-finance his campaign in the seven figures. Mapstead's strategy is to concentrate on the states of Maine and Nebraska, which divvy up their electoral college votes rather than being winner-takes-all, which could net an actual electoral vote or two and prevent either major candidate from getting a clean win. He tweeted following the Trump/L.P. convention booking that "I have the only plan to spoil this rotten election." He can tell he has gotten the Republican's attention, he says, because Trump's team has included him in internal polling where he's pulled about 1 percent. Mapstead has raised over $737,000 as of the beginning of May, around $719,000 of which came out of his own pocket.

"Mike ter Maat is that rarity, a Libertarian former cop (from Florida), though he stresses he was able to avoid vice squad duty or anything else that would cause him to violate libertarian principles. "You learn that your last line of defense of the Constitution is a cop in many cases," he says. In an L.P. nominating process that goes to as many rounds as it takes for someone to win a bare majority of the delegate vote, with the lowest-vote candidate dropped each round, ter Maat thinks his ability to "take support from every element of the Libertarian Party," from the Mises Caucus to the Classical Liberal Caucus to the Christian Caucus, makes him a strong contender. His large staff and "background in policy and public service" give him a combination of policy boldness and the credibility needed in a general election, he insists, where he intends to borrow as much money as necessary to run a campaign that can "disrupt American politics." Ter Maat has raised over $233,000 as of the start of May, with $209,000 of that loaned or donated by himself....

"[T]hough only Rectenwald supports the Trump appearance, the rest of the Libertarian presidential field does not seem inclined to whine about it, though all are full of comments about where they differ from Trump, from spending to trade to foreign policy to COVID lockdowns. Trump's appearance and the resulting publicity is 'something our candidate will have to overcome,' Oliver says. 'I want to be an extreme contrast to Biden and Trump, and send a loud and clear message that we are not the party of Trump.'"

RFK Jr. eying Libertarian POTUS nomination

Libertarians could supercharge RFK Jr’s campaign. But can he prove he’s one of them? | Semafor | David Weigel:

February 9, 2024 - "In California, where Robert F. Kennedy Jr. lives, he needs 219,403 valid signatures to make the ballot — or 75,000 registrations with his new “We the People” party. In North Carolina, he’d need 82,542 valid signatures by May 5. And on Friday morning, the Democratic National Committee filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against Kennedy’s super PAC, accusing it of 'illegally coordinating' with the campaign to get him on state ballots.

"One weird trick could fix that problem. The Libertarian Party, with automatic ballot access across most of the country, will pick its nominee in 107 days. And Kennedy might go for it. 'We have a really good relationship with the Libertarian Party,' Kennedy told CNN’s Michael Smerconish last week. 'I feel very comfortable with most of the values of the Libertarian Party.'

"The ex-Democrat called for the release of Julian Assange at the New Hampshire libertarian PORCfest; he denounced 'turnkey totalitarianism' at last year’s FreedomFest. That speech earned him an invitation to this month’s California Libertarian Party convention in Orange County, where he’ll join the party’s presidential candidates in a forum, as a potential challenger. 'I’ve unironically been told that I’m platforming Bobby Kennedy,' California Libertarian Party chairman Adrian Malagon said, with a laugh. 'In what universe am I platforming a Kennedy? He’s platforming us.'

"Kennedy, who has benefitted from voter angst about President Biden’s age and Donald Trump’s rap sheet, has built a following among many Libertarians. He’s done so while holding views that contradict the party — especially after the 2022 victory of the Mises Caucus, a radical faction irritated by the nominations of ex-Republicans (former Rep. Bob Barr, former Gov. Gary Johnson) who didn’t share their more doctrinaire views. Johnson was booed at a 2016 Libertarian Party debate for supporting the 1964 Civil Rights Act and for being the only candidate against abolishing driver’s licenses.

"Kennedy’s differences run deeper. The current party platform opposes state intervention in the economy; Kennedy has proposed tax-free government bonds to help Americans buy homes. The party believes that 'people should be able to travel freely' across borders; Kennedy promises to 'close the border' with Mexico and finish the border fence with a day one executive order. The party is 'anti-war in every context,' a point its official account reiterated on X after Kennedy explained his stem-to-stern support for Israel. 'His vibes go well with the current Libertarian Party, but the policy specifics don’t,' said Brian Doherty, a senior editor at Reason magazine and historian of the movement....

"This week’s events showed exactly why Kennedy, the best-known third party candidate in America, is polling so much better than other outsiders in recent election cycles. In just one hour, last night, Joe Biden flubbed a reference to Egypt (he said 'Mexico') in a press conference called to dispel doubts about his mental fitness, and Donald Trump — celebrating a Nevada caucus win that was preordained by the state GOP — said 'Turkey' when he meant 'Hungary.' In that environment, third parties have an unusually strong chance to prove their relevance, and policy litmus tests and specifics simply don’t matter as much.

"Kennedy holds some views that are antithetical to the Libertarian Party. But he’s been with them on three defining issues of the Biden era: Opposing vaccine mandates, battling tech companies over free speech, and halting any further military funding for Ukraine. And Kennedy takes Libertarians seriously. While he hasn’t been campaigning at state Libertarian Party meetings — the California convention will be his first — he’s made himself available to movement influencers. Dave Smith, a comedian and leader in the Mises faction’s LP takeover, conducted an 80-minute interview with Kennedy last week about his support for Israel. They couldn’t find common ground, but they wanted to....

"The purists are not making way for Kennedy. Michael Rectenwald, whose platform calls for abolishing the income tax and shuttering most of the national security state,... said [Kennedy], 'thinks he can ride into Washington like a white knight and fix all of our problems'.... The Mises faction’s critics are skeptical, too. Nicholas Sarwark, who chaired the LP from 2014 to 2020, ... saw opportunity for Libertarians if they welcomed 'never Trumpers' who were abou to be politically homeless; he saw far less upside if the party embraced Kennedy. 'They’re casting around for somebody who gives a shit about their stupid right-wing anti-vax politics, and nobody does,' said Sarwark.... 'It’s probably the stupidest political strategy I’ve ever seen.'"

Milei makes case for capitalism at Davos

Javier Milei Tells World Leaders: 'The State Is Not the Solution' | Reason | Katarina Hall:

January 18, 2024 - "Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei praised the virtues of free markets and warned political leaders about the dangers of collectivism in a speech at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday. 'The West is in danger, it is in danger because those who are supposed to defend Western values find themselves co-opted by a worldview that — inexorably — leads to socialism, consequently to poverty," Milei said in the opening of his keynote speech in Davos, Switzerland, during his first overseas trip as president.

"Milei explained that no other country is a better example of this trend than Argentina. Once a global economic powerhouse, Argentina has spiraled into poverty as a consequence of extensive state intervention in the economy. Two out of every five Argentines live in poverty and the inflation rate is over 200 percent.

"In his 23-minute address, Milei argued that the key to eradicating poverty worldwide lies in adopting free market ideals and capitalism. 'Far from being the cause of our problems, free enterprise capitalism, as an economic system, is the only tool we have to end hunger, poverty, and indigence,' he continued. 'The empirical evidence is unquestionable'....

"The libertarian president emphasized that market failure can only happen if there is coercion by the state, 'which has a monopoly on violence.' He criticized the collectivist approach of dismissing freedom and opting for more regulation to fix a country, which generates 'a downward spiral of regulations until we are all poorer'....

"Since his inauguration on December 10, the anarcho-capitalist president has implemented measures to counteract Argentina's history of collectivist policies, including a substantial devaluation of the peso and a reduction of government ministries. In December, Milei presented several other reform bills to Argentina's Congress, which aim to drastically cut state spending and deregulate several economic sectors. Milei's proposals are currently being discussed by Congress, but his party lacks the majority in both houses of Congress. The proposals also face staunch opposition from labor unions and other protesters....

"'We come here today to invite the other countries of the West to return to the path of prosperity,' Milei told his audience. 'Economic freedom, limited government, and unrestricted respect for private property are essential elements for economic growth. This phenomenon of impoverishment produced by collectivism is not a fantasy. Nor fatalism. It is a reality that we Argentines know very well.'|

"'"Do not give in to the advance of the state. The state is not the solution. The state is the problem itself," Milei declared."

NM governor uses public health order for gun ban

Last Friday New Mexico's governor, Lujan Grisham, issued a public health emergency order banning concealed and open gun carry in Albuquerque and surrounding Bernalillo county. The order applies for only 30 days, but can (and according to the Governor probably will) be renewed.

New Mexico's Governor Suspends the Right To Bear Arms, Saying the Second Amendment Is Not 'Absolute' | Reason | Jacob Sullum:

September 10, 2023 - "New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday issued a 'public health emergency order' that purportedly suspends the right to bear arms in Albuquerque and surrounding Bernalillo County. The order, which lasts for 30 days but can be renewed, applies to concealed or open carry of firearms on public property, with exceptions for police officers and security guards. Grisham said "citizens with permits to carry firearms are free to possess their weapons on private property (such as at a gun range or gun store), provided they transport the firearm in a locked box, use a trigger lock, or [use] some other mechanism that renders the gun incapable of being fired.'

"The order covers 'cities or counties averaging 1,000 or more violent crimes per 100,000 residents per year since 2021,' a criterion currently met only by Bernalillo County. Grisham, a Democrat, says the carry ban is a necessary response to 'recent shooting deaths of a thirteen-year-old girl on July 28, a five-year-old girl on August 14, and an eleven-year-old boy on September 6, as well as two mass shootings this year.' At a press conference on Friday, she conceded that the order was apt to be challenged in court as a violation of the Second Amendment....

"Yesterday the National Association for Gun Rights, together with a member who lives in Albuquerque, sued Grisham in federal court, arguing that her order flies in the face of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. That decision overturned New York's sweeping limits on public possession of firearms and established a constitutional test for gun restrictions, which the Court said must be 'consistent with this Nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation.' Gun Owners of America, along with another Bernalillo County resident, filed a similar federal lawsuit against Grisham on Saturday. Both groups argue that Grisham's order plainly fails the Bruen test....

"The New Mexico Shooting Sports Association, a chapter of the National Rifle Association, said it planned to join the two other groups in challenging Grisham's order. Grisham said state police would be charged with enforcing the order, which prescribes a fine of up to $5,000 per violation. The Associated Press reports that Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina 'said he won't enforce it, and Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said he's uneasy about it because it raises too many questions about constitutional rights.' In a statement issued on Friday, Allen said 'the temporary ban challenges the foundation of our Constitution, which I swore an oath to uphold.'

"Grisham seems unfazed by those concerns. 'The purpose is to try to create a cooling off period while we figure out how we can better address public safety and gun violence,' she said at Friday's press conference. 'There are gonna be a lot of questions about whether or not we think we have the legal rights to do that. I am sure … there will be a legal challenge, and I can't tell you that we [will] win it, given all of the different challenges to gun violence laws and restrictions on individual firearm access and control…. I think it's time to talk about the absoluteness of the discussion and the current court actions that suggest that the Second Amendment is an absolute right'....

"'I have emergency powers,' Grisham told The New York Times. 'Gun violence is an epidemic. Therefore, it's an emergency.' During the press conference, she also indicated that she probably would extend the order, which she said would be lifted only if 'the epidemic' of gun violence ended after 30 days, adding, 'I bet it's not over in 30 days'....

"State Reps. Stefani Lord (R–Sandia Park) and John Block (R–Alamogordo) on Saturday said Grisham's order was grounds for impeachment. 'This emergency order violates the Governor's oath to protect and defend the rights of New Mexicans,' they said in a press release. 'The legislature has a duty to intervene when the government is overstepping its boundaries, and Governor Grisham's order and comments disqualify her from continuing her tenure as Governor.' Lord called the order 'an abhorrent attempt at imposing a radical, progressive agenda on an unwilling populace'....

"When a reporter asked if Grisham 'really think[s] that criminals are gonna hear this message and not carry a gun in Albuquerque on the streets for 30 days,' Grisham said, 'No.' So 'even Grisham,' Lord says, 'believes this emergency order won't [stop] criminals from carrying or using weapons,' which suggests the order 'will only put New Mexicans in danger as they won't be able to defend themselves against violent crime.'"

U.S. credit rating downgraded by Fitch

U.S. Credit Rating Downgrade Is a Sign of Government Dysfunction | Reason = Eric Boehm:

August 2, 2023 - "Fitch Ratings downgraded the U.S. government's credit rating from 'AAA' to 'AA+' on Tuesday afternoon.... In its announcement, Fitch said the downgrade reflected the federal government's growing mountain of debt and the country's fraught political dynamics—most recently evidenced by the brinksmanship over the debt ceiling that nearly triggered a default on the national debt.

"'The repeated debt-limit political standoffs and last-minute resolutions have eroded confidence in fiscal management,' Fitch said in its announcement. The change also reflects an 'expected fiscal deterioration' over the next few years, as the federal deficit is projected to grow wider, adding to America's already staggering total of $32 trillion in national debt. The rating service also pointed to the widening gap between the federal government's tax revenue and its spending, as well as the 'limited progress' being made toward solving looming issues like the projected insolvency of Social Security in the early 2030s.

"While the AA+ rating reflects that U.S. debt remains a trustworthy investment, Fitch's downgrade is a warning signal about the federal government's fiscal trajectory.... The national debt is on course to double relative to the size of America's economy in the next 30 years, and as the debt grows, so will the cost of interest payments. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that interest on the national debt will consume one-third of the federal budget by 2050. That means more than 30 cents of every dollar taxed out of the economy will be directed towards the ongoing costs of past deficit spending rather than being used to cover government services.

"'High and rising debt would have significant economic and financial consequences,' the CBO warned in June, echoing similar recent concerns raised by the Government Accountability Office and non-governmental groups. The mountain of debt will 'slow economic growth, drive up interest payments to foreign holders of U.S. debt, elevate the risk of a fiscal crisis, increase the likelihood of other adverse effects that could occur more gradually, and make the nation's fiscal position more vulnerable to an increase in interest rates,' the CBO said.

"Fitch is the second of the 'big three' credit rating firms to downgrade the federal government from its highest to second-highest category. In 2011, Standard and Poor's (S&P) knocked America's debt rating from AAA to AA+, where it remains today. That change also followed a tense political standoff over the debt ceiling, though the federal government had a now-quaint $14 trillion in debt at the time. The current total is over $32.6 trillion....

"Given current fiscal and political trends in Washington, it was a question of when, not if, the U.S. would see another credit rating downgrade. Unless something dramatically changes, this is unlikely to be the last."

Adult-use cannabis to be legalized in Minnesota

Minnesota Will Be the 23rd State To Legalize Recreational Marijuana | Reason - Jacob Sullum:

May 22, 2023 - "Minnesota's Democratic governor, Tim Walz, today reiterated his promise to sign a marijuana legalization bill that arrived at his desk on Saturday. That will make Minnesota, which legalized medical marijuana in 2014, the 23rd state to allow recreational use. The Minnesota House and Senate, both of which are controlled by Democrats, had previously approved slightly different legalization bills. H.F. 100, which both chambers passed last week, reconciles those differences.

"Adults 21 or older will be allowed to possess two ounces or less of marijuana in public, share that amount with other adults, keep two pounds or less at home, and grow up to eight plants, four of which are mature. Those provisions take effect on August 1.

"The bill also establishes an Office of Cannabis Management to license and regulate commercial production and distribution. Marijuana products will be subject to a 10 percent retail tax, in addition to standard state and local sales taxes (which total about 8 percent in Minneapolis, for example). Local governments will be allowed to regulate retailers and cap their number but will not be allowed to ban them entirely. Rep. Zack Stephenson (DFL–Coon Rapids), a co-author of the bill, said licensed sales should begin in 12 to 18 months.

"Cannabis consumption initially will be limited to private residences. But the law eventually will allow marijuana use at specially licensed businesses and events. Driving under the influence of marijuana will remain illegal. But Minnesota does not have a per se standard that makes a driver automatically guilty based on THC in his blood. Its law requires evidence of impairment.

"H.F. 100 eliminates some marijuana offenses and downgrades others. It requires automatic expungement of misdemeanor marijuana possession records, ... [which] a process that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says may take until August 2024 to complete. The bill creates a review board to consider resentencing of people with marijuana felony records.

"A recent SurveyUSA poll found that 64 percent of Minnesota voters support marijuana legalization, including 81 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans. That is similar to the national breakdown among American adults that Gallup reported last fall."

WHO declares Covid emergency over

The World Heath Organization has announced that Covid-19 is no longer a public health emergency of international concern, more than three years after declaring the emergency.

World Health Organization finally declares Covid is 'over' more than 3 years after pandemic began |Post Millennial - Jarryd Jaeger:

May 5, 2023 - "On Friday, the World Health Organization [WHO] declared that Covid-19 was no longer a global health emergency. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu's announcement comes nearly three and a half years after the virus was first labeled a public health emergency of international concern.

"'The Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern,' Tedros said, according to the BBC. 'I've accepted that advice. It is therefore with great hope that I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency.'

"Tedros noted that the announcement should not be taken to mean the virus no longer poses a risk. 'The worst thing any country can do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that Covid-19 is nothing to worry about,' he warned.

"In a statement, the WHO highlighted the fact that the pandemic had 'prompted countries to enhance their functional capacities, particularly related to emergency coordination, collaborative surveillance, clinical care, and risk communications and communication engagement'.... 'Reaching the point where COVID-19 can be considered as no longer constituting a PHEIC should be seen as an accolade to international coordination and commitment to global health.'"

A symbolic end to the COVID pandemic | Sky News, May 5, 2023:

WHO Declares Global COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Over. It's been over for most Americans for a long time already | Reason - Ronald Bailey:

May 5, 2023 - "The global COVID-19 health emergency is now over, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).... This is old news in the United States. The national COVID-19 emergency was officially terminated by a joint resolution of Congress and signed by President Joe Biden on April 10.... Nevertheless, the fact is that the pandemic was effectively over for most Americans well before the declarations made by Congress and the WHO.

"Back in December 2021, I reported on an article in the journal BMJ by two researchers who noted that 'the end of the pandemic will not be televised.' In their article, Princeton historian David Robertson and University of Maryland pharmacy professor Peter Doshi ... asked, 'By what metric, then, will we know that it is actually over?' After reviewing the history of three 20th century influenza pandemics, including the Spanish flu ... Robertson and Doshi argued that ... the pandemic will 'gradually fade as society adjusts to living with the new disease agent and social life returns to normal.' Basically, epidemics socially end when people grow tired of panic mode and learn to live with a disease.

"As the vaccines rolled out and the risks associated with infection became clearer, most Americans felt increasingly comfortable returning to normal activities — shopping, dining out, and attending social gatherings — by the spring of 2021. It's taken our global and domestic public health authorities two years more to formally acknowledge that for most Americans, the COVID-19 emergency has been long over."

Lockdown Files shine light on UK Covid policy

Britain's 'Lockdown Files' Reveal the Sordid Thinking Behind Pandemic Policy | Reason - J.D. Tuccille:

March 20, 2023 - "When cornered, some politicians grudgingly admit COVID-19 restrictions went too far and made little sense. But that still leaves us wondering as to their thinking when they locked playgrounds, mandated masks, restricted travel, shuttered businesses, closed schools, confined people to their homes, sent cops after paddle-boarders floating on the lonely sea, ignored their own rules, and otherwise inflicted harms worse than a virus could ever manage.

"Now an important disclosure of communications among British officials reveals just how government officials' minds work when exercising extraordinary power.... The Telegraph this month published The Lockdown Files drawn from 100,000 messages exchanged among government officials. They reveal powerful people warn[ing] that restrictive policies would cause more harm than the disease, decisions made for public relations reasons, media enlisted to suppress dissent, and officials gloating over inconveniences to the public....

'WhatsApp conversations contained in The Telegraph's Lockdown Files show that those running the country privately acknowledged the 'terrible' price of lockdowns and twice reimposed the national shutdowns, even as they discussed the damage they were causing to physical and mental health, children's prospects and mental health,' the newspaper's team noted. Among the consequences of which they were directly warned were interrupted medical treatments and ill effects on children.... In addition, officials were 'worried about the Government being sued by the families of those who had died because of the backlog on cancer care and elective treatments.'

"When the British public became resistant to damaging restrictions on business, gatherings, and movement, Hancock openly embraced plans to 'deploy' news of COVID-19 variants to 'frighten the pants off everyone' to encourage compliance with lockdown rules. The idea was sufficiently well accepted that officials referred to their efforts as 'Project Fear.'" Fomenting panic was in keeping with the seat-of-the-pants decision-making driving much pandemic policy.

"Then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson boasted of making decisions based on 'science,' but was more driven by polling — and sometimes by what he himself feared was bad data that overstated risks. Johnson 'appeared to express a desire to lift the country out of lockdown earlier than planned, but said his media advisers – Lee Cain and James Slack – warned him that such a move was "too far ahead of public opinion",' reports The Telegraph. 'When Mr Johnson broached the subject of opening schools before the summer, his health secretary argued against doing so, saying that "everyone's accepted there won't be more on schools until September"' 'The exchanges call into question the prime minister's insistence that lockdown decisions were made on the basis of the best scientific evidence,' adds The Telegraph. 'They also raise the prospect that Britain spent many weeks living under restrictions that could have been avoided'....

"[A]t least a few officials gained pleasure from the pain they imposed on others.... 'Simon Case, the Cabinet Secretary, said it was "hilarious' that 149 people had been told to stay in government-approved hotels on their return from Red List countries in 2021,' the newspaper summarized. 'He also joked about passengers being "locked up" in "shoe box" rooms'.... For his part, Hancock 'was an advocate of using the police to crack down on anyone deemed to have broken quarantine or lockdown rules, even though the regulations were often open to interpretation'....

"'What was most alarming was the alacrity with which the broadcast news media fell into line – with boundless enthusiasm – as they were given a key role in the day to day dissemination of government authority,' observed The Telegraph's Janet Daly. 'As the medium through which the official information was conveyed – with, as we now know, often misleading modelling projections and outdated death figures – they went from being public service news media to what the BBC notably has always insisted it is not: state broadcasters. From disinterested journalism to Pravda in a single bound'....

"The correspondence in the 'Lockdown Files' was leaked to The Telegraph by journalist Isabel Oakeshott, who was collaborating with Matt Hancock on his memoir and was disturbed by what she saw. 'We were all let down by the response to the pandemic and repeated unnecessary lockdowns,' she commented earlier this month. 'Children, in particular, paid a terrible price. Anyone who questioned an approach we now know was fatally flawed was utterly vilified; including highly respected and eminent public health experts, doctors and scientists.' \

"We may never know exactly what members of America's own pandemic-exploiting political class were thinking when they turned the screws on people's liberties. But thanks to the Lockdown Files, we can make a good guess."

Kids lost avg. 4 months' learning during pandemic

Children Lost One-Third of a Year of Learning During the Pandemic, Analysis Finds | Reason - Emma Kemp:

February 3, 2023 - "According to a new analysis of over 40 studies from around the world, children lost an average of one-third of a year of school during the coronavirus pandemic. Researchers say the loss is largely due to the disruption and damage school closures — and the subsequent shift to distance learning—brought on children's physical and mental health. This latest assessment is further evidence that pandemic school closures contributed to historic learning loss among children — a loss that seems increasingly difficult to repair.

"Published on Monday by the Nature Human Behaviour journal, the analysis compiled the results of 42 studies examining pandemic learning loss from 15 countries around the globe. It found that, globally, children lost 35 percent of a school year's worth of learning during the pandemic.

"The studies also indicate that attempts to reverse the severe learning loss caused by COVID school closures have been far from successful. Upon returning to the classroom, the deficits created during the pandemic have remained 'incredibly stable," indicating that pandemic-era learning losses are likely to follow children throughout the rest of their academic careers. The deficits are particularly pronounced in mathematics, which ... 'might be due to parents being better equipped to help their children with reading, and children advancing their reading skills (but not their maths skills) when reading for enjoyment outside of school.'

"Learning loss was more pronounced in the middle-income countries, like Mexico and South Africa, included in the analysis. Indeed, middle-income countries accounted for the three highest estimates of learning loss. Studies from low-income countries were excluded due to poor data quality, though researchers note that 'learning deficits are likely to be even larger in low-income countries, considering that these countries already faced a learning crisis before the pandemic, generally implemented longer school closures, and were under-resourced and ill-equipped to facilitate remote learning.'

"Even in a high-income country like the United States, the magnitude of learning loss remained steep. One study included in the analysis found that the average public school student in third grade through eighth grade lost half a year of math learning and a quarter of a year in reading.

"However, two countries studied, Sweden and Denmark, managed to experience no significant learning losses. Sweden famously managed to avoid most school closures during the pandemic and notably never closed primary schools. While Denmark did have school closures, one study theorized that the lack of learning loss could be due to the country's 'reliable digital infrastructure with Denmark being one of the absolute top-scorers in digital skills, broad-band connectivity, and digital public services in Europe'....

"Currently, the picture for American children is bleak. Without immediate intervention, 'learning loss will be the longest-lasting and most inequitable legacy of the pandemic,' Thomas Kane, a Harvard economist who reviewed the analysis, told the New York Times. According to the Hoover Institution, U.S. children attending school during the pandemic are likely to experience a 5 percent reduction in their lifetime earning potential — a number that rises to as high as 9 percent in some states."

No evidence Russian Twitterbots influenced 2016 US election

Study: Russian Twitter Trolls Did Not Throw the 2016 Election to Trump | Reason - Robby Soave:

January 9, 2023 - "Russia's efforts to sway the 2016 U.S. presidential election in Donald Trump's favor by influencing voters on Twitter had no discernible impact whatsoever, according to a new study by New York University's Center for Social Media and Politics. 'We find no evidence of a meaningful relationship between exposure to the Russian foreign influence campaign and changes in attitudes, polarization, or voting behavior,' wrote the study's authors....

"Just 1 percent of Twitter users absorbed about 70 percent of the so-called Russian disinformation, meaning that a tiny fraction of overall users encountered actual Russian trolls. These users were overwhelmingly partisan Republicans; there is no reason to think that masses of gullible swing voters who might have voted for Hillary Clinton were hoodwinked by Russia and opted for Trump instead.

"And this finding closely tracks previous research on the same subject. A 2019 review by Science magazine found that just 1 percent of Twitter users were exposed to 80 percent of the misinformation present, and these tended to be older, extremely partisan users —people who were already voting for Trump.... Another study by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found that 94 percent of Twitter users never shared this kind of content.

"The NYU study also replicates a central finding of these earlier reviews of the research: namely, the amount of time, money, and effort Russia spent on influencing social media users was a drop in the bucket compared with the work being done by the Trump and Clinton campaigns themselves, as well as the attention being paid to the candidates by U.S. media outlets....

"The news probably came as a surprise to many readers; unfortunately, mainstream and liberal consumers of political news have been conditioned to believe that misinformation—often of foreign and Russian origin—is the source of countless modern maladies. But time and time again, data tell a different story.

"As I wrote in my 2021 book Tech Panic: Why We Shouldn't Fear Facebook and the Future, 'the fact that the professional pundit class are themselves excessively active on social media probably makes them especially susceptible' to the idea that everything is Twitter's fault."

Biden's double standard on Covid protests

President Biden has urged the Chinese government to respect the rights of anti-lockdown protesters. He actively encouraged the Canadian government to end the Freedom Convoy protests.

Biden's Support for COVID Protests Hinges on What Country They're in | Reason - Christian Britschgi:

November 29, 2022 - "The White House has been quick to support the rights of Chinese demonstrators taking to the streets in opposition to the country's 'Zero COVID' policy and the seemingly endless lockdowns needed to enforce it. Recent revelations show that closer to home, the administration actively encouraged a civil liberties-violating crackdown on Canadian protests against vaccine mandates.

"'We think it's going to be very difficult for the People's Republic of China to be able to contain this virus through their zero COVID strategy,' reads a Monday White House statement in response to anti-lockdown demonstrations that swept through major Chinese cities and university campuses over the weekend. "We've long said everyone has a right to peacefully protest, here in the United States and around the world. This includes the PRC.'

"The latest reports from China say police have flooded into public spaces to prevent fresh demonstrations from breaking out, and they have started to contact suspected rally attendees. The White House's statement seems an attempt to ward off a more serious, violent crackdown, while not giving Chinese Communist officials too much room to claim that demonstrations are being directed from Washington. All things considered, that's a reasonable approach, even if the cautious wording has enraged some conservatives who want Biden to take a harder line.

"Certainly, the statement is a lot more criticism than the White House ever offered of the Canadian government's harsh crackdown on truck drivers protesting a requirement that they be vaccinated in order to reenter their country. Quite the opposite. The Biden administration urged the Canadian government to use whatever means it had to reopen border crossings barricaded by the so-called 'Freedom convoy' and get a handle on the protests. That's according to revelations of an ongoing Canadian inquiry into Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's unprecedented invocation of Canada's Emergencies Act.

"Trudeau's use of the act in February 2022 allowed his government to freeze the bank accounts of protest participants (even if they hadn't been charged, convicted, or even suspected of committing a crime), demand financial information of protestors be turned over to police, and ban even peaceful, non-disruptive public demonstrations. It was an unquestionably authoritarian move that received criticism from across the political spectrum. Conservative Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Trudeau of declaring a dictatorship. The progressive Canadian Civil Liberties Association called the prime minister's actions 'unnecessary, unjustifiable and unconstitutional'....

"Reporting from Politico on the inquiry into Trudeau's use of emergency powers shows that top-level Biden administration officials, including Department of Homeland Security officials, were in frequent contact with their Canadian counterparts during the trucker protests. They urged a swift end to the demonstrations. The pressure campaign included a call between Biden and Trudeau a few days before the Emergencies Act was invoked. During that call, the prime minister reportedly assured the president that there was a plan to end the protests quickly. U.S. and Canadian officials had even planned to have daily check-in calls about the protests. Once Trudeau activated the Emergencies Act, those never happened. Evidently, Washington had already gotten what it wanted.

"China's 'Zero COVID' policy is a lot stricter and a lot more injurious to people's civil liberties than Canada's vaccine mandate for truckers. But thus far, it seems like the Canadian government's response to its protests has been more sweeping and restrictive. That doesn't mean Canada is generally more authoritarian than Communist-ruled China.... But Trudeau's actions are evidence that progressive, democratically elected governments still struggle with the authoritarian impulse when their control is threatened. It's an impulse the Biden administration was happy to encourage....

"The takeaway from Biden's role in all this is that the president's view of the right to demonstration hinges far more on his own political self-interest than on any principled commitment to free expression. It's also a lesson in how restrictions on freedom in one country can damage it everywhere. Biden embraced an expansive view of his executive powers to effectively mandate vaccines for millions of Americans. That contributed to his support for the suppression of Canadian anti-mandate demonstrations. That support in turn erodes his moral authority to lecture the Chinese government on the right to protest."

Patients report being pressured to choose death

Some Canadian patients report being encouraged to choose assisted suicide as a way to cut hospital costs.

September 7, 2022 - "In 2015 Canada's Supreme Court struck down bans on medically assisted suicide as a violation of citizens' liberty, writing that 'An individual's response to a grievous and irremediable medical condition is a matter critical to their dignity and autonomy. The prohibition denies people in this situation the right to make decisions concerning their bodily integrity and medical care and thus trenches on their liberty. And by leaving them to endure intolerable suffering, it impinges on their security of the person'.... [T]he judges note that a ban on physician-assisted suicide 'is rationally connected to the goal of protecting the vulnerable from taking their life in times of weakness' but that such protections don't justify a full blanket prohibition on the practice. And so, the court ordered Canada to draft new legislation permitting euthanasia and assisted suicide. The Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) law was implemented in 2016.

"Unfortunately, the philosophical argument for the right to die can also end up colliding with troubling decisions in a country where the government funds and controls access to healthcare. That is reportedly happening in Canada.... According to the Associated Press, hospitals are raising the possibility of assisted suicide with patients who hadn't asked about it. These conversations are not motivated by quality of life but health care costs. The A.P. notes that Belgium and the Australian state of Victoria, which allow physician-assisted suicide, tell medical professionals not to bring up euthanasia so that it's not seen as medical advice.... This is not the case in Canada, where health care workers are trained to inform patients that they can choose euthanasia if they have a qualifying condition....

Roger Foley, who has a degenerative brain disorder and is hospitalized in London, Ontario, was so alarmed by staffers mentioning euthanasia that he began secretly recording some of their conversations. In one recording obtained by the AP, the hospital's director of ethics told Foley that for him to remain in the hospital, it would cost 'north of $1,500 a day.' Foley replied that mentioning fees felt like coercion and asked what plan there was for his long-term care. 'Roger, this is not my show,' the ethicist responded. 'My piece of this was to talk to you, (to see) if you had an interest in assisted dying.' Foley said he had never previously mentioned euthanasia....

"That Canada's health care system is primarily publicly funded and also has very long wait times for certain types of medical care has naturally raised questions about whether health officials are looking out for patients or what's best for the service providers and government.... Over the weekend, [a] 2017 report on CBC about 'potential savings from assisted suicide was making the rounds on Twitter. The ... report by the Canadian Medical Association Journal ... calculated that implementing assisted suicide programs would cost $1.5 million to $14.8 million but could reduce annual healthcare spending by between $34 million to $136.8 million. The report itself wasn't suggesting physicians encourage suicide....

"Tristin Hopper at the National Post notes that there are already several horror stories suggesting people are being pressured to die and that there are questions about whether health officials are making sure patients are of sound mind:

Last June, the Medical Assistance in Dying Committee heard from Trish Nichols, whose suicidal and severely mentally ill brother Alan was given assisted death at a Chilliwack, B.C., hospital in 2019, at a time when MAID was still limited only to Canadians with a terminal illness. Alan had been taken by his family to the hospital only days before to recover from a psychiatric episode, and in the minutes before he received a lethal injection, Trish described Alan screaming uncontrollably, despite the hospital's assurances that he had opted for a medically assisted death while 'of sound mind'....

"The lesson here should not be that assisted suicide is bad, but heavy government involvement in health care decisions has an inescapable distorting influence..... A survey from 2016 found that Canadians wait longer to access health care services than citizens in 11 other countries.... A 2020 study from the Canadian Family Physician journal notes that the country simply provides less freedom and opportunity for people seeking medical care than other countries, even when healthcare is centrally planned:

What these countries do differently than Canada is they allow the private sector to provide core health care insurance and services, require patients to share in the cost of treatment, and fund hospitals based on activity (rather than the global budgets that are the norm in Canada).

"In absence of significant 'freedom' to pursue individualized health care options, Canada is now potentially violating citizens' rights in the exact opposite direction than it was before. People have the right to die but also the right to continue living in the face of medical adversity. That Canada's publicly-operated health care system is unable to efficiently meet the needs of citizens makes all these health worker interactions about euthanasia inherently suspect."

US Democrats spend to help Trump Republicans

Why Do Democrats Keep Backing the Trumpiest Candidate? | Reason - Joe Lancaster:

July 20, 2022 - "Yesterday was Maryland's primary election day. The winner of the Republican gubernatorial primary was supported by both former President Donald Trump and the Democratic Governors Association.... For not the first time this election season, Democrats decided to put their collective thumbs on the scale to encourage Republican voters to pick the most extreme candidate. They believe that .. will ultimately help Democratic candidates once general elections roll around....

"Maryland Republican Governor Larry Hogan is term-limited and unable to run again.... Hogan endorsed Kelly Schulz, another moderate Republican and the former head of the state's respective labor and commerce departments. But on election night, Schulz was defeated soundly by Maryland Delegate Dan Cox....

"Earlier this month, the DGA spent $1.2 million on an ad targeting Cox, more than twice what Cox had raised to that point. The ad highlighted Trump's endorsement, and claimed Cox was 'fighting to end abortion in Maryland" and 'will protect the Second Amendment at all costs, refusing to support any federal restrictions on guns, even pushing to put armed guards in every school'.... While likely horrifying Democrats, the ad goosed Cox's prospects among Republicans: He ultimately beat Schulz by more than 15 percentage points.... Cox participated in the January 6 Capitol riot, busing people to Washington ahead of time and tweeting '[Vice President Mike] Pence is a traitor' after protesters had already breached the building....

"Democrats clearly see Cox as an easier opponent in the general election. They may be right:... Maryland leans Democratic by 26 points over the national average. But in an election year expected to be highly favorable to Republicans, it's worth wondering why Democrats would elevate a candidate that other Maryland Republicans call 'unstable,' 'unfit for office,' and 'a Q-anon whack job.'"

Rep. Peter Meijer's Trump-Backed Primary Challenger Got a $435,000 Gift From Democrats |Reason - Robby Soave:

Aug. 1, 2022 - "Rep. Peter Meijer is a Republican congressman from Michigan. His district was previously represented by Justin Amash, the first Libertarian member of Congress.... He has often channeled Amash's independent streak, most notably by voting to impeach President Donald Trump for inciting the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Meijer's defiance of the Trump wing has earned him a primary challenger: John Gibbs, an ardent Trump loyalist who has backed the former president's stolen-election claims (while also spreading conspiracy theories about John Podesta and Democrats in general)....

"[T]he Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), an arm of the party that works to elect Democrats ... spent $435,000 on an ad campaign aimed at boosting Gibbs in the final days before the primary.... As Meijer pointed out in a recent article for Bari Weiss, it was far more money than Gibbs had raised on his own and 100 times as much money as Trump himself had donated to Gibbs....

"In his article for Weiss' Substack, Meijer pointed to several other examples [stress added - gd]:

It's not just my race in Michigan. While claiming the moral high ground, Democrats have been busy rewarding candidates like my opponent across the country:

Colorado: Democrats have spent $4 million on TV and digital ads to elevate January 6th attendee Ron Hanks over moderate businessman Joe O'Dea in the GOP Senate primary.
Pennsylvania: Democratic gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Josh Shapiro boosted the election-denying, January 6-attending GOP candidate Doug Mastriano in television ads, spending in one ad double what Mastriano had spent on his own campaign. Mastriano is now the gubernatorial nominee in a swing state.
Maryland: The Democratic Governors Association spent hundreds of thousands of dollars boosting Dan Cox, who not only attended the rally on January 6 but called Mike Pence a traitor as the violence unfolded.
Illinois: The Democratic Governors Association dropped $35 million on Super PAC ads targeting moderate Republican mayor of Aurora Richard Irvin and elevating his election-denying, Trump-endorsed opponent, Darren Bailey, who ultimately won the nomination.

"This strategy has backfired spectacularly on Democrats in the past. It was an open secret that the 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign was actively rooting for Trump to win the Republican presidential primary campaign; Clinton staffers reasoned that Trump would be easier for her to beat than the other candidates. We all know how that turned out.

"Expecting political figures to be more forthright is obviously a hopeless endeavor. But there's something particularly craven about a political party cynically donating nearly half a million dollars to a stop-the-steal extremist ... — all while that party's members are collectively weeping at democracy's supposed grave."

Mises Caucus wins control of US Libertarian Party

Mises Caucus Takes Control of Libertarian Party | Reason - Brian Doherty:

May 29, 2022 - "A four-year battle for control of the Libertarian Party (L.P.) ended Saturday in Reno with a victory for the Mises Caucus at the party's national convention. The faction's chosen candidate for chair of the party's national committee, Angela McArdle, won on the first round of balloting.... McArdle, a paralegal and current chair of the Libertarian Party of Los Angeles County, said in her speech to the convention Friday that the government response to COVID has left many working-class Americans thirsty for personal liberty, and 'we don't want to ignore them.' They have, she argued, 'low-resolution views of freedom…and we need to bring that vision into focus by communicating our message clearly and by supporting our candidates and affiliates.'

"While McArdle was the Mises Caucus candidate, the behind-the-scenes mastermind of its victory was caucus founder and leader Michael Heise. His disapproval of William Weld, Gary Johnson's running mate in 2016, was an initial inspiration for the caucus' launch.... The caucus's official platform is plumb-line libertarian, but its foes say that too many Mises Caucus members and fans downplay libertarian positions that might offend the right, are intentionally obnoxious and bullying...., The sense the caucus is soft on or actively encourages racism attracted the attention of the Southern Poverty Law Center just before the convention began, which aired the concerns in a story reported with cooperation from many Libertarian Party members upset with the Mises Caucus. Both Heise and Mises Caucus stalwart Joshua Smith, who won the vice-chair election Saturday, denied the charges of racism.

"Heise said in a phone interview prior to the convention that the basic vibe they are seeking is online youths into edgy comedic podcasts, a new counterculture for whom the old L.P. holds little appeal. Heise believes that the current rumored frontrunner for a Mises Caucus–approved presidential nominee in 2024, comedian and podcaster Dave Smith, is so well-connected to the Joe Rogan world that legacy respectable mainstream media will be meaningless for party messaging moving forward.

"In his nominating speech for McArdle before the vote, libertarian antiwar author and podcaster Scott Horton insisted that he's seen thousands of new convention-attending members energized by the Mises Caucus in the last couple of years.... Meanwhile, during that same period, fierce factional dueling has played out in hundreds of hours of podcasts, hundreds of thousands of words of tweets and Facebook threads, and often on the business listserv of the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) itself. One such fight, summed up at length in Reason in June, involved a faction of non-Mises libertarians in New Hampshire attempting to create a new L.P. affiliate so that the national party could disaffiliate the Mises-dominated one and recognize the new one. The gambit, which ultimately failed, led to the resignation of then-national chair Joe Bishop-Henchman and caused one of the party's few elected officials, Dekalb, Illinois, City Clerk Sasha Cohen, to quit in protest as well, saying 'we are a big tent party, but no tent is big enough to hold racists and people of color, transphobes and trans people, bigots and their victims.'

"Despite bad blood, I detected no booing or walkouts today when McArdle's victory made the caucus' victory manifest. None of the anti–Mises Caucus delegates or supporters that I have spoken to at the convention — including people from Illinois, Florida, Texas, Massachusetts, and even Mises stronghold New Hampshire — said that this takeover would make them walk. Two former significant donors to the L.P., Kyle Varner and Michael Chastain, both with decadeslong history in the party, did say in phone interviews that the Mises turn, which they see as importing a level of racist edgelording they have no taste for, has made them stop funding L.P. candidates.... Varner and Chastain see a distinctly right-wing culture and policy bent from the Mises faction....

"The caucus also wants to completely eliminate any mention of abortion.... A document of internal Mises Caucus strategizing that began circulating before the convention explicitly said ... that 'one of the major goals of the Mises Caucus is to make the LP appealing to the wider liberty movement that is largely not currently here with us. That movement strongly rejects wokeism and the word games associated with it. This along with the deletion of the abortion plank will display that there are serious cultural changes in the party that are more representative of that movement'.... (Disgruntled non–Mises Caucus libertarians in Pennsylvania have left the L.P. and formed the new Keystone Party.)...

"Heise wrote on Facebook Friday night that his faction already controls a majority of the LNC, having swept the votes for regional representatives to the LNC in meetings Friday night.... Mises Caucus favorite Caryn Ann Harlos, who was booted by the LNC from her elected secretary position over Mises-related faction fights, re-won her elected position Saturday as well.

"The Mises Caucus people often dub themselves the revival or continuation of the Ron Paul revolution of libertarian ideas in the GOP's 2008 and 2012 presidential races. (Paul spoke at a party the caucus hosted Friday night.)... In those 2008 and 2012 races, however, Paul studiously avoided anything that might be construed as 'anti-woke' and generally avoided talking to his campus audiences about abortion and immigration, where he was at odds with many other libertarians. While the Mises Caucus might argue that the threat of progressive woke thought control was less severe then, the podcaster/memelord edgy-offensive-insult-comedy stance they often embrace is entirely opposite to how Ron Paul presented himself and won his huge audience as a presidential candidate."

US Disinformation Governance Board on pause – czar blames "disinformation"

Nina Jankowicz Claims 'Childish Behavior' Led to Disinformation Board Being Put on Ice | Independent Journal Review - Bradley Cortright:

May 20, 2022 - "Nina Jankowicz, who was tapped to lead the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Disinformation Governance Board, insists that national security is at risk because of 'childish behavior' now that the panel has been put on hold. During an interview on CBS News on Thursday, Jankowicz said, 'I would say that the Disinformation Governance Board was the victim of disinformation.'

"'Disinformation is false information spread with malign intent. And clearly, there was a malign intent on some actors in the media and in politics who just really stood up to the formation of this board because it would be confronting disinformation,' she continued. 'They completely mischaracterized its mission. And frankly, this childish behavior is endangering our national security now. This board was set up to counter real disinformation that makes Americans less safe.... So those who stand in opposition to the board — which as the secretary said was just an internal coordinating mechanism something to make sure we were efficient and using best practices — are standing in the way of our national security,' she insisted."

Nina Jankowicz's Faulty Record, Not Her Critics, Doomed the Disinformation Board | Reason - Robby Soave:

May 18,2022 The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has placed a 'pause' on the newly-minted Disinformation Governance Board; its first executive director, Nina Jankowicz, has resigned.... It's unclear whether plans for the board will be un-paused in the future; Jankowicz had initially decided to resign, reconsidered when she was told the pause might be temporary, and then ultimately left anyway....

"This news comes from an exclusive report by The Washington Post's Taylor Lorenz, whose scoop is buried underneath layers of pro-government verbiage. For WaPo, the story is not that DHS shuttered the Disinformation Governance Board — the real story is that right-wing 'coordinated online attacks' achieved this outcome after subjecting Jankowicz to an 'unrelenting barrage of harassment'....

Jankowicz's experience is a prime example of how the right-wing Internet apparatus operates, where far-right influencers attempt to identify a target, present a narrative and then repeat mischaracterizations across social media and websites with the aim of discrediting and attacking anyone who seeks to challenge them.... Experts say that right-wing disinformation and smear campaigns regularly follow the same playbook and that it's crucial that the public and leaders of institutions, especially in the government, the media and educational bodies, understand more fully how these cycles operate....

"Yet there is good reason to be skeptical of both the Disinformation Governance Board and Jankowicz's fitness to run it. Informal efforts to police disinformation on social media are beset with serious challenges, as moderators and fact-checkers routinely make odious mistakes: Just today, Facebook dubiously censored a recipe for homemade baby formula. The social media site's fact-checkers have previously flagged Reason articles as spreading false information, only to later admit the articles in question were accurate. John Stossel, host of Stossel TV and a contributor to Reason, is currently suing Facebook for characterizing his videos as misleading, even though fact-checkers eventually conceded he was right.

"Government disinformation cops are no better; time and time again, public health officials circulated false information about COVID-19, and suppressed perfectly legitimate discussion of the theory that the virus originated from a lab leak. And when The New York Post reported on the salacious contents of Hunter Biden's laptop just weeks before the election, the story was widely dismissed by so-called disinformation experts and government security experts on grounds that they presumed it to be Russian malfeasance. "Hunter Biden Story Is Russian Disinfo, Dozens of Former Intel Officials Say," reported Politico back in October 2020.

"Jankowicz repeatedly made public statements indicating that she held this view, too.She shared national security officials' 'high confidence' that the Hunter Biden story was part of a Russian influence campaign. She described the idea that the laptop had been left behind at a repair shop as 'a fairy tale.' This was a critical test of whether disinformation experts could check their innate tendency to ascribe everything unfavorable to the Democratic Party as Russian nefariousness, and they utterly failed. Jankowicz failed as well."

Progressive panic over Musk's Twitter purchase

Elon Musk Buys Twitter, Twitter's Biggest Egos Melt Down | Reason - Liz Wolfe:

April 25, 2022 - "SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk [has] arranged $46.5 billion in financing to follow through on his unsolicited offer to Twitter's board to buy the social media site from them. This afternoon, the board accepted Musk's offer to buy the company for $54.20 a share. Long a Twitter power user/troll/loudmouth, Musk bought a 9.2 percent stake in the company last month, becoming the largest shareholder, before deciding he'd rather have the whole thing.

"Cue hysteria! Musk haters have taken to the site to declare that Donald Trump will now probably win the 2024 election, that Musk's bid is really about white power, that Section 230 must be reformed, and that, yes, Musk's new policies will be lethal."

Amid Twitter's Musk meltdown, Mark Hamill pledges to stay on 'no matter who owns it' | Yahoo News -  Christie D'Zurilla, LA Times:

April 26, 2022 - "When word exploded online Monday that Elon Musk had struck a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion ... many users announced they were leaving the social platform. Star Wars" luminary Mark Hamill was not among them. 'No matter who owns it, no matter who's on it, I'm staying to engage with you ...' the actor wrote Monday afternoon. Soon after, Hamill tweeted, "Weird. I just lost more than 8,000 followers in the last couple of hours. Was it something I said?' Same. Was just wondering the same thing," replied actor Josh Gad.... Commentator Keith Olbermann chimed in, 'I'm down about the same (proportionately) — around 1800'... Gary Whitta, a screenwriter with a "story by" credit on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," replied, 'Happening to many. Prevailing theory is that it’s people canceling their accounts following the Musk buyout'....

"'Ah he got twitter,' actor Jameela Jamil tweeted Monday. 'I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet'.... Bette Midler tweeted Tuesday, '"'Free (hate) speech is the (destruction) of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of (pedophilia, racism, & facism) humanity are promoted,' Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal." There. I fixed it.'

"Actor-activist Alyssa Milano let others speak for her, retweeting people who argued that social media platforms should be 'owned and operated as public utilities' and warned that billionaire ownership in key industries was 'what oligarchy looks like.' By Tuesday morning, the #LeavingTwitter hashtag had been hijacked by people who found it amusing that Musk's move had people pledging to leave the platform."

The Left’s Twitter meltdown proves Elon Musk’s point | The Telegraph - Madeline Grant:

April 27, 2022 - "Over the years, linguistic hyperinflation has enveloped virtually every aspect of the online world, with Twitter at the forefront. Words like 'fascist' and 'racist' have been overused to the point of meaninglessness. Rather than being a worthy concept in itself, 'free speech' is sometimes represented as little more than a sinister pretext to engage in 'hate speech'. Perhaps because the two definitions are often used interchangeably, Elon Musk – a free speech 'absolutist' who made his fortune in electric cars, and donated a chunk of it to Obama’s re-election campaign – is often, absurdly, described as a 'far-Right' figure.

"Twitter also favours explosive over-reaction, one reason for the deranged response to the announcement of Musk’s takeover – as if this were digital armageddon, the end of the world as we know it.... Amnesty International deplored the move from its official account, tweeting 'Two words: toxic Twitter'.... Vivian Schiller, Twitter’s former head of global news, treated listeners of the Today programme to a dystopian vision of the platform’s future, describing her 'existential dread' at the takeover....

“'I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny', lamented actress Jameela Jamil in a valedictory tweet.... 'Freedom of speech is vital, but free speech does not mean a free pass for hatred', said [London mayor] Sadiq Khan. President Biden’s team are reportedly worried that Donald Trump might be readmitted and will use his beefed-up Twitter following to secure the next election....

"Perhaps the most hilarious reaction is from those who piously characterise Twitter as some sort of noble public square when in reality it is a character-limited social media platform, where petty one-upmanship and unsolicited intimate pictures abound.... On occasion, Twitter stifles free speech – de-platforming Trump, yet allowing Taliban leaders to tweet, for example. During the pandemic, social media moderators often used their powers to silence particular viewpoints. On Facebook especially, proponents of the Covid lab leak theory were, for some time, labelled spreaders of “misinformation” until the US Government acknowledged the evidence in their favour. Shouldn’t we welcome someone who wants to spend their own money unwinding these sorts of attitudes?"

Biden flip-flops on wealth tax

Biden's Desperate Wealth Tax Flip-Flop } Reason - Peter Suderman:

March 29, 2022 - "In December 2019, when Joe Biden, still campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, released his tax plan, much of the coverage focused on the contrast between his comparatively [moderate] plan and the plans issued by his more progressive rivals. A CNBC report on his plan was labeled 'wealth tax wars. A Washington Post headline noted that  Biden's $3.2 trillion tax plan highlighted 'divisions' with Sens. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D–Mass.). Among the starkest of those divisions was that the former vice president had rejected calls by Warren and Sanders to back a wealth tax on the richest Americans.

"On the campaign trail, Biden himself played up that contrast. Among the criticisms lobbed at the Sanders and Warren wealth tax proposals was that they were fundamentally punitive, because they taxed wealth of a small, specific group of individuals. He told a wealthy crowd of supporters in Los Angeles that while they shouldn't expect a tax cut from him, there would be 'no punishment either'.... He complained about divisive tax policy, and rejected the idea of a 'a single tax, on a single group of people'....

"Yet now, as president, Biden has embraced a wealth tax of his own. In his latest budget plan, Biden proposed something the White House has dubbed the 'Billionaire Minimum Income Tax,' which applies to all income, realized and unrealized, for households worth more than $100 million. The Biden administration is framing this as a form of 'prepayment' on future capital gains — which is to say it's a form of taxation on money that someone has not actually seen, based on the value of their holdings. It's not exactly the same as the wealth taxes proposed by Warren and Sanders, but it's designed around the same fundamental idea: the taxation of personal wealth, rather than of cash income, which often takes the form of difficult-to-value assets.

"Most of the same criticisms that applied to the Warren and Sanders plans still apply: Biden's plan probably wouldn't raise nearly as much money as the administration assumes: Wealth taxes are exceptionally difficult and resource-intensive to administer, which is why most OECD countries that have implemented wealth taxes eventually dropped them. It's also quite likely to be unconstitutional. At minimum, if it passed, it would be tied up in court.

"But ... it's not intended to pass, which makes this exercise even more of a charade. Biden's latest wealth tax proposal is part of the White House's annual budget proposal, which is always a sort of wish list rather than a realistic path forward for the budget. Biden's wealth tax, then, is a desperate policy gimmick by a White House struggling with low approval numbers on the economy....

"It's a publicity stunt, however, that tells us something, not only about Biden's leftward drift, but about his comportment as president, given his previously stated opposition to the idea. Biden is willing to make an obvious phony of himself, embracing a policy he knows is punitive, divisive, unworkable, and virtually certain not to pass — and he's willing to do so simply to get attention. Not only is Biden not a moderate, he is evidently not trustworthy either."

Covid shattered myths of Cuban socialized medicine

The Myth of Cuban Health Care | Reason - Daniel Raisbeck & John Osterhoudt:

April 8, 2022 - "'If there's one thing they do right in Cuba, it's health care,' said Michael Moore in a 2007 interview. 'Cuba has the best health care system in the entire area,' according to Angela Davis, 'and in many respects much better than the U.S.' 'One thing that is well established in the global health community is the strength of the Cuban national health system,' said Clare Wenham, a professor at the London School of Economics. Claims like these have appeared in hundreds of documentaries, newspaper articles, and magazine features.... It's a testament to the effectiveness of the Castro regime's propaganda apparatus that this myth, so deeply at odds with reality, has persisted for so long.

"'The Cuban health care system is destroyed,' Rotceh Rios Molina, a Cuban doctor who escaped the country's medical mission while stationed in Mexico, tells Reason in Spanish. 'The doctor's offices are in very bad shape.' 'People are dying in the hallways,' says José Angel Sánchez, another Cuban doctor who defected from the medical mission in Venezuela, interviewed by Reason in Spanish.

According to Rios, Sánchez, and others with firsthand experience practicing medicine in Cuba, the island nation's health care system is a catastrophe. Clinics lack the most routine supplies, from antibiotics to oxygen and even running water, and their hallways are often occupied by ailing patients because there aren't enough doctors to treat their most basic needs. Cuban hospitals are unsanitary and decrepit. It's exactly what you'd expect in a country impoverished by communism.

"The only thing that's changed is that because of social media and the COVID-19 pandemic, the government's propaganda facade has finally started to shatter. And yet in 2021, some journalists were falling for the claim that the Cuban government had set the model in its response to COVID-19. By July of that year, ordinary Cubans had taken to the streets — and to Twitter and Facebook — in part to call attention to what the pandemic had actually meant for Cuban hospitals and clinics. In the 15 years since the release of Michael Moore's documentary Sicko, which celebrated Cuban health care, everyday citizens have been armed with smartphones, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, empowering them to tell the truth about what it's really like to walk into a Cuban hospital.

"So how did the Castro regime's propaganda machine manage to fool so many for so long? According to Maria Werlau, executive director of the Cuba Archive, the answer lies with Cuba's foreign medical missions, which are teams of health care professionals dispatched to provide emergency and routine care to foreign countries. The first medical mission was sent to Algeria in 1963. After the fall of the Soviet Union, when the government lost its major source of aid, the program was ramped up significantly as a source of revenue for the impoverished nation. The Cuban government has promoted the missions as a humanitarian endeavor, and a demonstration of the community spirit and selflessness central to the communist project....

"The myth of Cuban physicians as selfless healers started to fracture in 2000 when two doctors from the mission in Zimbabwe slipped a note to an airline official with the handwritten word kidnapped. They had denounced the Castro regime and were being brought back to Cuba against their will, possibly to face jail time. Instead, they wound up in the U.S. and were granted political asylum.... In 2006, the George W. Bush administration created the Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program, granting health care workers stationed abroad permanent resident status. All they had to do was make it to a U.S. embassy. Over 7,000 medical workers took advantage of the program.... In 2018, a group of Cuban doctors who defected from the medical missions sued the Pan American Health Organization, which is part of the World Health Organization, for aiding in human trafficking and for earning $75 million in fees by acting as a middle man'....

"When defenders of Cuban health care acknowledge its deficiencies at all, they usually point the finger at the U.S. trade embargo, which has been in place since 1962. But the deplorable conditions in Cuban hospitals have more to do with a lack of basic health care supplies, which are readily available from other countries, such as antibiotics and steroids. Cuban hospitals also have a shortage of beds and stretchers, and some were without water for six to 12 hours a day at the height of the pandemic....

"Despite reports early in the pandemic that Cuba was an outlier in its success in combating COVID-19, by August of 2021 The New York Times was reporting that Cuba's health care system was 'reeling,' with oxygen supplies running low, a shortage of syringes, and mortuaries and crematories 'overwhelmed.' Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel blamed the U.S. trade embargo."
